Thats right people. In our long travels around Malaysia we have met lot's of travellers, that had Pulau Penang in their plans but when questioned why they were going to the large island and the big city of Georgetown, they replied with an answer that they didn't know and they said that it was just a big dirty city with maybe nothing of any interest there. We said we wouldn't go! Well we did! But only because it was on the way to Langkawi via ferry. So as you know after our long transfer from Pulau Perhentian and a ferry to Georgetown, where we saw our first sightings of Ladyboys (our driver Nasir said "many, many, many ladyboys in Georgetown") we had food and crashed out for the night. The following morning we put some much ... read more

Another day of diving, another two dives. On the first dive we saw a good range of maring life, including a number of turtles. When we were back on the surface I felt a pain in my arm. Sarah, the divemaster said it was just sealice, but when we got back on the boat she realised it was a proper jellyfish sting, and out came the vinegar! Thankfully no one had to pee on my arm tho. My sting was pretty trivial compared to the injuries on board though - two snorkellers had decided to climb on some rocks above the dive site and fallen, cutting themselves quite badly. We had to go back to Tekek to take them to the clinic before we could get onto our final dive of the day - which allowed ... read more

So I arrived in Singapore at around 6 in the evening to find temperatures of 30 degrees and clear blue skies. Its an amazing city - very clean and modern. The underground is nothing like London's - its clean, efficient, cheap and air-conditioned. The hostel is really good - very clean and friendly and managed to get a bunk in a quiet spot. I spent my first evening wandering around Little India - just like it sounds (I imagine, never having been to Big India). Lots of incense burning on stalls selling beautiful garlands of dried flowers and fruit and vegetables, some of which I couldn't identify - mostly because they didn't come wrapped in plastic with a big label and sell by dates all over! Had a curry in a little cafe, though I couldn't ... read more

Nasi Lemak makes a great breakfast. Coconut rice, chilli sauce and crunchy fish make an unlikely culinary delight, especially with the ubiquitous coffee (from a bag) with slug of condensed milk. After brekky it was time to head out for another days action packed diving. First stop was Fan canyon, and the second was around Soyah island. Two very good dives, but somewhat overshadowed by the night dive which was SPECTACULAR. It was the same site as yesterdays afternoon dive, but in the dark. The early part of the dive was nice, but pretty standard. The real greatness came tho when we headed across to the house reef, turned out lights out and started kicking around. A little like I experienced in Australia the water gave off bioluminescence when disturbed. Unlike in Australia this time I ... read more

Despite having spent a week in Bali I never had a real fresh roti at all, but today I remedied that. People seem to really appreciate it when you speak the local lingo, and the chap at the roti stall was no exception. I chatted to him in Pigeon Malaysian while he turned to small fat dough ball into a huge thin disk, then folded it in a fried it up to make the finished snack, served with a hot vegetable curry - a great start to the day. At about 10:15 I went down to the ferry terminnal which was now bustling unlike yesterday afternoon. I got a small overloaded shuttle out to where the larger boat was moored a little out to sea. The journey out was pretty uneventful (i.e. both pretty and uneventful!) ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Perhentian Kecil May 23rd 2006

So we have ended up on yet another paradise island! Yes I know, it's hard. You wouldn't believe the dilema that faced us! We were struggling with which paradise island to go to! See the Perhentian Islands is made up of the big island (Besar) and the small island (Kecil). Well in the end we chose Kecil, long beach. It was a good choice. Upon arriving at the jetty we were mobbed by only one boat tout, which was surprising. Andy checked out the options of getting to the island. There are slow and fast boats, the slow ones being half the price, but when asked about the slow boats he was given blank answers. Why? So we caught another speed boat over to the island, this time I (Melissa) went on willingly, but held on ... read more

Duck porridge and Durian Juice I finally managed to track down the elusive textbook, and after a ricecake breakfast I trekked back across town to pick it up praying it would be small and light... and thankfully it was (ish). For lunch I had an interesting (thanks for the tip Chloe) Duck porridge lunch (literally duck and porridge) which was delicious. Its strange that at home we never use porridge as a base for anything other than breakfast, and it actually works very well. It was washed down with durian juice, which while tasty at first soon became too much to stomach. To Malaysia I caught a bus across the causeway into Malaysia. The crossing necessetated alighting twice - once for the Singapore departure and once for the Malaysian arrival. I cant help but think that ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah May 21st 2006

It was a year ago when I was visiting Sabah and now it is still the best state to have our 'Cuti-cuti Malaysia'. After travelling so far to another part of the world, I only realised that my own country is so beautiful. Due to my asthma problem, climbing Mt. Kinabalu used to be something I never thought of - at least never appeared in my list-to-do-in-my-lifetime…..until Wai Yee asked me to joint their team to Sabah. After a terrible (but still lots of fun though) experience in Gunung Ledang, I thought things wont get any worse and I decided to challenge myself again. After a few so called ‘training’ at Batu Cave (walking up and down the nearly 300 steps) we thought we were ready and voila, we were in Sabah after CNY. First day ... read more

After an hour on the internet searching for live webcast of the Munster match. It came to me on the pier while we were waiting for or ferry back to mainland Thailand. “If I leave now I can fly from Koh Somui to Singapore then to London and on to Cardiff. Just in time for the match! Come on it’s raining here anyway. I’ll surprise my family and it’ll be great.” Joel looked at me for a second and thought, is she for real? I was off till Joel poured water on the fire and said even if you got to the UK you’d miss the match or be very tired. So I didn’t get a flight from Ko Samui and didn’t make it to Cardiff. Next dilemma was where in Norhthern Malaysia will they show ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park May 21st 2006

Hey All, So we've been really busy the last week or so. Taman Negara is a national park that's like 4000 square km of jungle. There's all kind of wild animals there like elephants and tigers. We didn't see any of them though cause you have to do over night treks and stay in these places called hides which are basically like caves with beds and rats and insects all over the place and even after all that horrible stuff you only might see some animals. So I was like no way!! To get there we took one of those longboats through the middle of the jungle for 3 hours. It was pretty cool cause we saw water buffalo and stuff but by the end of it our asses were broken!!! We ended up staying in ... read more
