Hey everyone, hope all is well and you're all enjoying the heatwaves and World Cup fever. Having left Australia, the first leg of our Asian trip began in Singapore and we were greeted by a monsoon on our very first day. Picture the scene: 2 Brits with their overweight back-packs dashing from tree to tree trying to avoid the downpour. Only once we dried off and were on our way to the citys Night Safari did we look back and manage a laugh. The hour long safari trail itself was very entertaining and it has certainly whetted our appetites for the real deal in Africa later in the trip. The other main attractions of Singapore were the Raffles hotel, the night skyline from the river, the space age opera house and dining out in the many ... read more

Just a quick update, I saw my first wild monkeys of the trip. Brilliant, monkeys are great, one girl even got a photo of a monkey having a sly wank. But then, I was tricked by the monkeys, who sat and posed for photos, while one of their mates walked up the tree, got in position, and pissed on my head. Little bastards.... read more

I'm across the sea from peninsular Malaysia on Borneo! It's not like the other islands I've been catching some rays on. It's huge and it's rainforest. This is the closest to the Equator I've ever been....it's pretty freakin hot. I guess when I'm in Indonesia I'll be in the southern hemisphere for the first time. I'll definatley be watching which way the toilet flushes. Borneo is a nice place with lots of national parks and cool animals to see. It's famous for having tons orangutans so I'll probably go see some of those bastards. But they also have a lot of oil and timber and I haven't seen that side of things yet. The food is amazing. ***Lindsay and Emily remember me saying I didn't like Indian food? I was wrong! I love Indian food. I ... read more

Just a quick note before we run out of Malaysian Ringitts for the internet. We spent two night in Kuala Lampur and head out tomorrow morning for Myanmar. We've gotten prepared by getting $100 US bills which we've heard get the best black market exchange rate in Yangon...should be interesting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like we'll have internet or email while we're there so check back after 6/26 when we get to Bangkok for a post on our adventures in Myanmar. The highlight of KL was going up to the sky bridge in the Petronas Towers...the 2nd tallest buidlings in the world - and Mike's favorites. We were initially disappointed when we arrived to find out that all the tickets for the day had been given out already. We dejectedly talked to the head usher and ... read more

Hello everybody! Hope everyone is good back home! Sorry We haven't blogged in a while but the computer in our hostel is as unreliable as a Malaysian bus. We are actually in Australia now, Perth to be exact, but first we shall tell you of our adventures after Koh Phangnan and into deepest darkest Malaysia. We took a ferry from Koh Phagnan to the mainland, then after a small amount of confusion and a much longer journey than expected we ended up in Nakhom Si Thammat (that's not how you spell it). Anyway, we decided to take in some culture for our last few days in Thailand, so we visited a huge buddhist temple and the museum of thai art and stuff. It was interesting but felt quite out of place! Helen managed to stay away ... read more

We had some time in the morning for a little more sightseeing before our flight left in the afternoon. We walked to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, which wasn’t open yet, so we wandered around the Eastern & Oriental Hotel and then walked though The Garage, a restored old building which is now a mall. Headed back to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion for the tour. We highly recommend a visit to the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion website, since visitors are asked not to take photos inside the mansion. The tour was one of the best guided tours we’ve been on, largely because the guide was one of the architects responsible for the restoration of the mansion, and she was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The rooms of one wing of the mansion are used as guest ... read more

While I was in the US, I found out about a conference on English language teaching and research that was going to include one of the giants of second language acquisition, Stephen Krashen from USC. I sent in a proposal to present and it was accepted. The conference was in the KL metro area in a city called Shah Alam. Jo’s brother Cheng Poh agreed to go with me on a road trip across the peninsula to the capital and Shah Alam. This trip only took about 4 and a half hours with the last hour and a half getting through the mess of KL traffic on a Tuesday afternoon during rushhour. The drive across was fast thanks to the new 4 lane divided highway (tollway) that heads to the capital from Kuantan. The old highway ... read more

I flew into Singapore after a fairly boring few days in Brisbane. Once you've visited the 30,000 museums and galleries, theres not a lot else you can do for free, I have memorised the Brisbane city layout now though, so if I come back with a work visa, I can always go for a job as a cab driver. Singapore! I arrived at about 9pm, and my airport pickup didn't come to pick me up, which was fine though, as it gave me the chance to use the Singapore public transport system, which is pretty damn good. The trains arrive on time, and they are spotless, in 4 days of using trains every day, only 1 smelt like urine. So I jumped on the train and headed to Little India. I wasn't able to get ... read more

Up early and got a taxi out to the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, an Indian Hindu temple. It was raining and the cabbie wasn’t sure where we wanted to go, so when he dropped us off at a temple outside of town in the pouring rain, we hoped it was the right place. The temple was actually closed, but a man let us in and walk around for a quick look. We left and walked down the road (in the rain) to the path going up the hillside to the temple we were actually looking for. By the time we got to the temple it was raining pretty hard, so we stood under the overhang until the rain subsided somewhat. We were entertained by a young monkey who was screaming because a dog was blocking his ... read more

Arrived in Georgetown, capital of Penang, Malaysia, around 10AM, and took a taxi to the Traders Hotel. Walked around Georgetown all day. Visited the Penang Islamic Museum, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, and several of the kongsis, or traditional clan-houses, including Cheah Kongsi, Yap Kongsi, and Khoo Kongsi. The clan-houses are family-specific and serve as gathering places and places of worship for generations of families. We also got a tour of the Kapitan Kling Mosque, which was quite interesting, and the first time either of us had been to a mosque. We had to go to the education center to get a guide, who shared with us many different aspects of Islam. Walked down Lebuh Pantai, a street lined with old colonial buildings, which begins near the water. Across the water we could see the Malaysian ... read more
