Hi Guys, We were only in Penang for a few days but I didn't really like it. There we prostitutes every where and at night there were rats all over the place!! We were in Knots at a sign in our hostel that said please beware of the prostitutes and cross dressers and in brackets lady boys!!! One of them was after Eoin one night which I found quite amusing!! There was a cool big shopping centre with a cinema so we got to see The Da Vinci code. It was brill wasn't it?? The only one problem was that when they were speaking french the subtiltles were in Malay and Chinese or something. Ah well. We did do a tour there though and saw loads of temples and Buddahs and I can't even remember what ... read more

I awoke late, which I blame partly on beer and partly on the fact that my room has no windows and therefore is pitch black without the light on 24 hours a day. I spent the day again wandering around KL, this time heading out west where the Bird Park, Gardens, National monument and so on Lie. Scam? As I was walking back to the hotel I was approached by a young (25yr old?) Malaysian woman who started chatting to me "where are you from, how long you here" etc. She asked me if I wanted to have a drink with her, so I decided not to be overly paranoid and went. I asked for a can so I could make sure it wasn't drugged. I was sure I was being set up for a scam, ... read more

Hello all! We have had a manic few days in Kuala Lumpur and then Singapore, it has been mad to be around so many people and definately a bit of a shock to the system! We arrived in KL after a crazy night train, 16hours from Thailand in a bizzare sleeper, was kind of like the bunks in a mental asylam but definately a step up from the dirty night ferry. We stayed in a very trendy hostel and it was nice to get chatting to some other people. We spent the days seeing the sights...lots and lots of walking...to see the Petronas twin towers which contain a huge shopping mall. Actually KL is full of shopping malls, loads of stories high, one even had a theme park in it! We also took time to explore ... read more

... but my mind was there. caught the game elsewhere but I saw it at least. Off we went the following day to the Perhentian islands and boy are they like heaven we had bad weather for a day but then as if by divine intervention the next day it cleared. We went diving and saw beautiful things like turtles and sting rays. I also read the Da Vinci code in 3 days. Speed reader I am. Here are some photos of the beach and Joel looking very scared on the speed boat out to the island... read more

This morning we met for breakfast. Nisha and David had breakfast included so we had just intended to sit with them. However the lady takes their card and asks if we are together, we say yes and she seats us all, obviously having not looked at the card where it says 2 persons! So I could not be more chuffed! It was a buffet breakfast with everything from local breakfast of curry, rice and stuff to cereal, omletes cooked just for you, pancakes, bread, cheese, etc. I stuffed myself on crossiants, pancakes and waffles! Unfortunately Andy has had a bit of a dodgey belly so only had coffee otherwise I’m sure he would have made the most of it. And of course we all made our lunch from the breakie stuff too! We had decided to ... read more

It was unmistakable when it appeared out of the bus windows - the KL and Petronas towers indicating that I had reached my destination. The futuristic skyline also serves to remind that Malaysia, and KL in particular, is economically the most developed in South East Asia after Singapore. My hostel was a short walk from the bus station in the bustling fringes of chinatown. My room: just big enough to fit my rucksack in next to the bed, and no more. But thats all I really need. Having listened to the receptionists advice on how I should avoid going anywhere with groups of pretty girls who claim their parents are out of town I set off to find dinner, my heart being set on a famous banana leaf curry. But as is always the case... sometimes ... read more

Hope you all had a great May 24 long weekend! Travelling Isn't Always Rosy We have been travelling through Peninsular Malaysia over the past week. Every once in awhile you have one of those crappy days travelling where nothing seems to go right. Well we had one of those days last week on the day we flew from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur. We had wasted away the day doing nothing, but waiting for our flight, only to arrive at the airport and find that the flight had been delayed 3+ hours. It wouldn't have been so bad, if it was a decent airport, but the airport consisted of an open air waiting room, where you sat beside the taxis in the suffocating heat. Paul kept finding reasons to ask the information ladies questions, to get a ... read more

I didnt want to get up. I really didnt. But opening my eyes and facing the Kopi Susu was an inevitability. Richard, Junko, Anne, Marishka and myself all arranged to go for a trip around the island. Richard was as suprised to see me awake as I was him, with us having been the ones up til gone closing time at 04:30 last night. We hopped into the speedboat and then we were off to see some more of Tioman. First stop was snorkelling just north of Juara, before we stopped on Juara itself. Juara is the smallest and quietest town on Tioman, literally nothing more than a beach and a couple of shacks. It would be a great place to stay on a honeymoon, but perhaps a little quiet for the solo traveller. As we ... read more

Yep. I spent about a week's budget on flights to get to Malaysia. But if I didn't fly it would have taken like a week to get here anyways so it was definately the way to go. And here I am in the capital of Malaysia. I had to fly from Hanoi, Vietnam to Bangkok, Thailand and then here to Kuala Lumpur. I could have done it in a day but I thought it'd be OK to hang out in Bankok for a day. I know, usually I hate being in Bankok but it was my last day with my friends Paul and Jasmine. Man it got crazy having to exchange money twice and not get mixed up. Vietnam's easy : 15,000 Vietnamese Dong per US dollar. Thailand is about 38 Thai Baht per US dollar, ... read more

The time had finally come! We had been counting the weeks and days until we were meeting with Nisha and David (from home). We caught the 8.15am ferry to Pulau Langkawi that got us in at 11am in the rain. We moved past all the taxi drivers Andy grabbed a bit of lunch and then we haggled for a taxi (they all seem to be fixed prices and there are no buses otherwise, naturally, that is what we would have got) to take us to the Berjaya Resort, apparently the poshest place on the island!! It was such a hardship that Nisha and David happened to be staying on a nice part of the island (which is a big holiday destination rather than a backpackers place) so we had to book into the same place as ... read more
