Well after a very eventful flight over I was finally in Kuala Lumpur airport. The flight over was ok flown from Gatwick to Dubai then to Singapore and finally LK.I sat with 2 very interesting people on the plane. A young Indian guy called Ben on the first flight then a teenager called Edgar from Euganda. He was going to Malaysia to study for 4 years and has never travelled before. He also had a culture shock with the type of food that was being offered, as it really wasn’t what he was used to. He was a great guy and enjoyed passing away the flight time with him. I arrived in KL airport in the early hours of Sunday morning and was shattered was greeted by a very smart Malaysian man who got me a ... read more

It takes four hours to get from Kuching to Batang Ai. This was once a valley that has now been flooded to make way for an artificial lake and dam to produce hydroelectricity. It's in the middle of the jungle and close to the Indonesian Kalimantan border. There is not much wildlife to be seen here as, according to one of the Iban (the local tribe native to this area) guides, they are afraid of people as the Iban in the past have hunted them for food. We could have trekked into the jungles or gone to visit a nearby longhouse but we are taking it very easy here. Two weeks of getting up at 6 a.m. every day to go diving, to catch a flight or to go on a boat trip has taken its ... read more

Selamat Detang everyone Welcome to Malaysia, its early days and we are right on the tourist trail, and so far everyone has been very friendly and helpful. After a very long trip traveling the relatively short distance from the city of Singapore to Melaka in Malaysia, the time being taken by having to queue to get through customs!! Arriving in the historic town of Melaka, we found a very clean and friendly place to stay called Trekkers Lodge, the staff very friendly and helpful, towels are provided but no top sheet, this has to be hired separately!! (we live and learn). Although we’d read up about Melaka before arriving, it didn’t prepared us for the history of the place and it's been fascinating as well as a gourmets delight, well perhaps not quite, but the food ... read more

Looking at my camera this morning...some very random photos...Woke up feeling awful, and have felt awful all day really. Maybe we should have stayed in bed longer, stick only went to bed at 5, and we got up at 9. walked ... read more

We're still just lazing the days away here in Kuantan. We've been staying up late and sleeping in until 11-12 most days, but slowly we're trying to get to something more normal. The World cup is to blame for some of it, the rest is just being lazy...but hey, we're on vacation, aren't we? Well, when we're actually awake we do get out and about, a bit farther than the pool. We head down to the beach at the bottom of the hill or over to see Jo's folks. There is also a lot of eating involved as I think I mentioned that is what Malaysians are all about. If we don't cook it here at the apartment or go to eat at the plethera of restaurants/hawker stalls then somehow food comes to us. Everyone who ... read more

heya all, this is the first of the blogs from Malaysia! Arrived yesterday at about 5:30pm, was just waiting for my bag when i heard a random voice asking us where we were from. This was Jason, an aussie guy who is on his way back to melbourne via KL and thailand. Turns out he is staying in a hostel just down the road from ours, and tried to get in to ours but it was full. Anyways, got a taxi from the airport, haggled the guy down from 180RM to 90, still a bit expensive but we were too tired to try anymore!the traffic was so bad so the journey took 2 hours, was probably better off getting the train, but ahwell we live and learn! The hostel , Red Palm, is really nice, the ... read more

Yesterday was a long travelling day: boat trip from Pulau Mabul to Semporna, then a mini-bus ride to Tawau airport followed by a flight to Kota Kinabalu and finally a flight to Kuching. We had a few hours in Kota Kinabalu and because Sean wasn't feeling well we killed time at the shopping malls. We had our heavy bags with us so I "borrowed" a supermarket trolley to cart our bags around the mall. Today we went to Bako National Park in the morning. Our guide meticulously pointed out all the plants that were especially good at providing aphrodisiacal qualities - for both men and women. She was quite obsessive about the whole thing. The local press here quotes a report that Malaysian men have sex, on average, 3.6 times a month. Perhaps that's why she ... read more

Malaysia has been so wonderful, maybe a little tiring because there is so much to do and see, but still wonderful. The last two weeks have flown by like crazy. I flew into Kota Kinabalu on the 1st of June and by the time I went to bed I met a couple guys to climb Mt.Kinabalu with and we were off the next day. To climb this mountain you need to book an extremely overpriced room at the top and also pay like $30 to reach the peak, but that’s not it, you also MUST get a guide. Now we all decided this was way to expensive to climb a mountain(we figured it out to about $80+ by the time all is said and done) and with a little info on how some others avoided ... read more

This is our third day on Pulau Mabul and tomorrow we leave this island and Sabah for Sarawak. A very experienced (scuba) diver here said that I was either brave or foolish to attempt diving at Pulau Sipadan (half an hour's boat trip from here) after not having dived for 8 years. In case you didn't know Pulau Sipadan is one of the greatest diving sites in the world. But such is the allure of Sipadan that I bravely, foolishly, attempted the dives. Yes I had several bouyancy problems and had to be pulled down by Sean back down into the water. It's strange that all the excessive eating during this holiday has not added sufficient weight to keep me underwater. The reward for diving at Sipadan: sharks, turtles, lots of corals and big fish, small ... read more
