Early start today 5.30 am as we are going to start journey to emporia with an overnight stay in Sepilok to stay at the Urang-u-tan sanctuary. Barry from the hostel was the guide and a non English speaking Malaysian driver for the mini bus. the sights were amazing we just seemed to climb up and up into the banana plantations, the view was awesome with the early morning mist just floating below the mountains.2 hrs into the journey was a stop off for toilet in a small village called Pekan Nabalu, then breakfast in this small hut/café noodles and grilled fish. Good job I have a strong stomach to eat such a dish that early (it was delicious though). Off we were again for another 2 hrs and then we stopped at a market village in ... read more

My god what a long journey.we are staying at a hotel near the sanctuary which is gorgeous the room looking over beautiful gardens and a river, fish and turtles everywhere (cool) .then onto the sanctuary after lunch. Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in the Malaysian Sabah District of North Borneo was founded in 1964, to rehabilitate orphan orang utans. The site is 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Today around 60 to 80 orang utans are living free in the reserve. When Sabah became an independent state in Malaysia in 1963, a Game Branch was created in the Forest Department for the conservation of wild animals in the region. Consequently, 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve was turned into a rehabilitation site ... read more

Selamat Detung Well just another noisey, smelly, overcrowed city, but it has to be done!! We’ve had major problems with the camera, so it seems that K L should be the place to buy a new one. After debating, and comparing prices, we bought the newer version of one that's just failed, I really would have liked a SLR, but the prices weren’t competitive enough!! Everyone told us that KL would be the place to do any shopping we have, not that we need anything or are able to carry any more!! However the few things that we did price were not any cheaper here. We’ve done the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower. At the KL Tower we took the option of a free nature walk, a very BIG mistake, as this was the ... read more

A quick update from my Malaysian paradise... least for now. Here are some photos of the latest development - a 60m two storey concrete building slap bang in the middle of long beach. As for myself - I'm alive and well working as a divemaster for Dive Tribe on Coral Bay. Lots of fun, diving most days, taking people to my favourite sites and showing off the fish and underwater life. That's it for now... more to come soon. ... read more

After spending enough time in the air conditioned comfort of Kuantan’s Megamall and other similar complexes, we decided that we really needed to get out and about the streets of the town. Sections of it have really changed, with hawkers food stalls being shifted across town to make way for a carpark, cinemas from Jo’s childhood being shutdown, and new shops replacing old ones. Most of the changes seem to have happened in the past three years since our last visit. The central part of Kuantan town is along Jalan Mahkota, a road paralleling the Kuantan River just above where it empties into the South China Sea. The shop blocks along this street are still the old colonial structures featuring a covered walkway under an overhang; these are called “5 foot ways”. The actual sidewalk is ... read more

Well I'm not dead...I know it's been a while since my last blog, but you guys have no idea how difficult it is to finish a blog, hours of time are spent on the Internet selecting pictures, shrinking pictures and then finally typing a story to fill in all the blanks. In general Asian cities are completely different from what most westerners experience on a daily basis at home. The living conditions are below what we have become used to. Things we take for granted, running water, flush toilets, toilet paper, clean restaurants are sometimes non-existent. It has been quite an experience learning about the cultures over here. Kuala Lumpur is a major city, it is filled with western companies, has massive shopping malls, a monorail, very clean subway/light-rail network. Once we left Kuala Lumpur, we ... read more

Man where did I leave off? Well I went to see some orangutangs at a wildlife sanctuary. It was cool because they were wild and they would bait them in with fruits so we could have a look. They were kinda boring though, really lazy and slow. Rhiannon and I also went to Similajau National Park along the coast. It was really great for hiking and supposedly to see some wildlife, although we saw nothing but insects. They have crocodiles, sea turtles, five species of dolphin and loads of other stuff like birds. Don't know how we missed them all, we went on a 14 km hike one day. We took some charcoal and cut up some potatoes, carrots, and onions we had bought to make a little beach barbecue. It was illegal but we were ... read more

Heya guys, now writing from penang, got here yesterday. Air Asia flight from KL, so easy and quick, only 50 mins. Penang is so different from KL, the buildings are all old and crumbling, but it gives it real character. The last few days of drinking and watching the football had caught up on me and stick, both so tired yesterday. I had a quick nap in the afternoon, then we went out for some chinese.mmmmmmm....lovely. Met up with a guy we met in KL, Kiet, hes from Sydney but has been living in the UK for 2 years, and on his way home, the same as Jason really. Didnt see jason again, we got turned away from the Rum Jungle club in KL cus me and stick both had flip-flops on. We walked back to ... read more

So here is a little of my time in KL. I got to see a lot more since I was barred entry to Indonesia my first time b/c of my passports expiration date. So I got to spend a couple more days in KL waiting for the embassy to open on Monday. It's a really cool city, reminds me a lot of San Francisco because of the hills and just a lot cleaner and nicer than other cities here in South East Asia. Everything is really easy to get to with the really great subway and monorail systems that circle through out the city, so I got to see a lot more and not be so worried about the price since it was so cheap compared to taking taxis. Though it is kinda weird sometimes b/c ... read more
