Upon Dave's fantastic suggestion of finding a beach shack somewhere in Asia, I was convinced that I should try to discover a bit of Asia before my Aussie visa runs out. When else will tickets be so cheap? So I booked super cheap Tiger Air tickets, Darwin to Singapore, and off to Malaysia I went! I started out on the trip after a 22-hour Greyhound ride up to Darwin from Alice. Had some interesting conversations during those long hours; the most interesting was chatting with the driver who used to guide for big tour company. So I didn't get much sleep and arrived in Darwin pretty tired. In the couple of hours there, I ended up running into people I knew, which was a great way to pass the time before my 3:15am flight. Why most ... read more

Kuching is symbolised by the Cat and the city makes the most of this with statues of Cats in many of the park areas. Unfortunately I spent most my time looking at four walls of Alai Backpackers B&B after catching flu and been laid low (cat napping!) for 6 of the 10 days I spent in Kurching. I was looking to have been pointed at Alai Backpackers as a place to stay because from the start I was welcomed like family by Vivian and Tony and so when I fell ill I received plenty of care and so didn't suffer any of the usual horrendous of been ill away from home and having no TLC. I loved Kuching. The waterfront area was a picture at sunset and as I started to recover and manage to walk ... read more

Have just returned from a week spent deep in the Borneo rainforest, yrt another amazingly cool experience. Another one of the places (after Prague, Lake Baikal, Mongolia and Wolong) where I could have stayed much longer. We flew to Kucking in Sarawak, Borneo almost two weeks ago and spent a few days here - very sweet town and the hostel, Singgahsana Lodge, is by far the best I've stayed in. We visited the Semangoah Orangutan rehabilitation centre where the orangs live in the semi-wild and can be viewed when feeding and the Matang Wildlife Centre where they work on the rehabilitation and possible eventual release of orangs - they had two of the coolest orangutans I've seen, Gus and adorable 2 year old female and Aman, a monster of 140kg who used to be blind but ... read more

The town of Kuching derives its name from the Malay word for cat and early investigations of its streets, after our ferry ride from Sibu, revealed cat motifs aplenty ranging from discreet logos on manhole covers to rather alarming giant cat statues on roundabouts. The peak of this cat mania was reached at the Kuching Cat Museum, housed in the Town Hall that itself resembled a spaceship. The museum's collection was comprehensive, with exhibits about cats in various civilizations, stages in a cat's life, common ailments, wild members of the cat family, catfish, and a mock-up of a catwalk with 3 models wearing cat-themed outfits. Umpteen cat sculptures and paintings included a good selection of maneki neko or "beckoning cats" (the ones with raised paws that you often see in Chinese and Japanese restaurants and are ... read more
