I love my life, I love what I'm doing, and I will take care As I prepared for the 3pm flight to Kuching, these were the thoughts that flashed through my mind. I'm thankful for all the concerns out there but certainly I would prefer to hear "enjoy your experience" coming from the concerned folks. Having being out of Singapore countless of times over the past 7 years, I've probably seen the best and worst. Every trip is a gamble because I won't know what to expect after I have done it and recounting those experiences in this blog. Often, we heard from fellow travellers returning back from their holidays and lamenting their good and bad experiences. We heed their remarks seriously and use them as a yardstick to determine our next destination (me included). "那个地方很落后,一点都不好玩!" ... read more

Day 303: Tuesday 28th April - The wonderful riverside setting of Kuching Kuching is another city in Borneo where the long-distance bus station is on the outskirts of the city. A couple of helpful locals point me in the right direction of where I can catch a local bus to the city centre. I check in to Singgahsana Lodge which is surprisingly very good and hip for a hostel in Asia, although the price does reflect this. After having some breakfast I start to explore Kuching, Sarawak’s main city and one full of history. Sarawak was a part of the Sultanate of Brunei 200 years ago but as a reward for help in putting down a rebellion, it was ceded to the British adventurer James Brooke who ruled it as his personal kingdom. Kuching was made ... read more

HELLO ALL. So, I have decided to keep a "blog" so I can let you all know what I am getting up to and that I am behaving myself. Since I left Manchester, I flew to Singapore via Dubai airport. Fucking retarded airport. I had to walk about 20 miles to get to an unventilated smoking room, where I think I inhaled more sweat particles than nicotine. Black mark for Dubai. So, with unsatisfied lungs, I flew on to Singapore. After surviving the flight, pleasantly surprised by the not crashing and dying, I made my way to a hostel suggested by a mate from the project in January. At this point I went.... er.... shit. What do I do now? Haha, it dawned on me that I had flown to the other side of the world, ... read more

Her fik vi mulighed for at se noget af Borneos ... read more

Anyway last time i wrote to you all i was on my weekend off and going to Bako national park, which was really fun to get there you have to get into a boat and go round the bay as there are no direct roads to the park, the waves were a little choppy and I got totally drenched, we even had to change our boat half way cos the bloke fort it mite snap, funny. Eventually got to the island and went on ... read more

Seeing the Orang Utans was so special that we went to the Semenggoh Sanctuary three times!!! These gentle creatures, that match our DNA at 96.3%, are called "The Man of the Forest" with "Orang" meaning man and "Utan" meaning forest. Whether it was rainy or sunny they arrived to eat the 60 pounds of fruit provided by the rangers. I can't begin to describe the experience of standing on the viewing platform and hearing the trees of the rain forest bend and crash as they made their way to the feeding area. At first, they were impossible to see, only the moving tree tops and the noise indicated their presence. As they moved closer their gymnastic abilities and their sheer size were breathtaking. Because of their fear of snakes, they would come to the feeding platform ... read more

Going to see the orangutans in Borneo has been the dream of mine since I was about 12 years old. On 14th Jan we were finally heading there for two main reasons: 1) to see the orange-haired apes (orangutans that is - not Seamus ;o) and 2) to climb Mount Kinabalu (highest mountain in south east Asia). When arriving at the airport in Kuching from Johor Bahru a small airport in Malaysia very close to Singapore, we were determined to get a local bus into the city centre and not wimp out and get a taxi. When the bus did arrive we were delighted to find not only were we the only people on it, but that it dropped us outside the hostel we had picked. Within half an hour of us arriving at the hostel ... read more
