Dear readers, apologies first of all for leaving my blog entry so late. I'm sure you are all devastated by the lack of updates. After returning from the mountain climb, and finally getting back to Kota Kinabalu, I decided it was time to rest up, take it easy and be a bit tighter with money. I arranged flights from KK to Kuching for the 13th of Jan, and would stay there for 6 nights before flying down to Bali (Indonesia) via Singapore, which would include a six hour lay over. So, my last couple of days in KK were spent doing very little. The majority of which were spent dossing around the hostel, using free internet, reading, watching Tv and talking to the people there I knew. The highlight of which was an afternoon spent on ... read more

The cheapest flight I could find was from Johor Bahru instead of Kuala Lumpur, which meant that on the morning of the 15th, I made my way over to the Puduraya busstation from Jalan Petaling. Tired of hauling a heavy backpack around (been doing it for quite some years now, and Ive got a bad neck and back, enough excuses?) I had bought myself one of these rolcases in forementioned street, you know, one of these suitcases on wheels. By the time I got to the actual bus station (which is really only a 4 minute walk) the whole bloody thing had already fallen apart! Plastic handles broke off, the zipper got stuck, the wheel frame broke loose from the actual case, therefore un-rollable, un-controllable and just bloody useless. Barely managed to get it on the ... read more

After our motorcycle ride around "Cat City", Patrick was anxious to see his sister Gaby again at the Matang Wildlife Center, a holding center for confiscated and surrendered animals, like Orang Utans. If possible, the animals are rehabilitated and released back into the wild or semi-wild. Gaby had been volunteering there for a month, and Patrick was picking her up to travel through Malaysia with her. Gaby was our personal guide through the center, which made it all the more interesting! Orang Utans are impressive animals. Orang Utan is Malay (and Indonesian) for "Jungle People" or "People of the jungle". They seem to be very friendly animals. They can be aggressive and unpredictable though, so we weren't allowed to come too close. Orang Utan "Peter" is known to like T-shirts very much and will rip your ... read more

On November 30, I took a 2-hour flight from Penang to Kuching, Sarawak (Borneo). Kuching means "Cat", but the city name may also be derived from the Indian word for "port", which is "Cochin": for more info on the origins click HERE if you're interested. Kuching is a pleasant city with the Sarawak river flowing through it. Arriving late at night, I checked into a hotel and went to sleep. The next morning I ran into a fellow Dutch guy, Patrick. We decided to rent motorbikes and cruise around town for the day. We went to the Sarawak museum and saw the quite impressive new parliamentary building. Sarawak enjoys a certain form of autonomy from Peninsular Malaysia so it has its own government. I even got a separate stamp in my passport when I entered Sarawak! ... read more

It's Sunday the 15th and its my last day in Malaysia- its been an interesting time!!!! . Kuching, in the Malay language means" cats" originally it was called Sarawak , the first White Rajah James Brook when he arrived in the early 1800's took a liking to the cats he saw in the town and re named it!! Now that information is for Jenny!!! I took a river cruise the first afternoon and this gave me a feel for the city and its history. It went on into the early evening when the crew gave us a dance demonstration from a number of the tribes! the following day my guide Lesley, and he was my guide as i was the only one on this tour, took me to the local places of interest museums galleries and ... read more

as promised more phot0s! Sarawak seems very different from sabah the city of 2half a million people is very very old and the state has some of the oldest virgin rainforests in the world. I am on a five day small group tour but just found out that i;m the only one!!im not too happy as this is not what I booked! They tell me that the tourist trade has really been hit by the recession and they have fewer visitors this year couple with the fact it is the low season. hey ho you'll just get more photos more often ,perhaps not so much drinking will be done or on the other hand perhaps more!! keep the comments flowing!! love only the lonely! xxxxx... read more

We flew from Penang due south to the large island of Borneo heading for the State of Sabah and the city of kota Kinabalu. Sabah like other places in Malaysia is a huge mix of races and we were told that different peoples speak more than 32 dialects very few written so most are dying out. We seem to be stepping from one paradise to another and our wonderful hotel while a resort is of a local design incorporating all of the Malaysian traditions and set on the sea front with the most fantastic views, we have sat on a little promontory island bar watching the sun go down sipping our Singapore slings - it’s a tough life!!!! Our first day was a lovely chill out day sitting in the beautiful grounds taking the sun, swimming ... read more

Kuching is a pleasant city/town with tasty Laksa (for breakfast of course) for 4 Ringitt about $1.30 it has a chinese/ malay feel with a smattering of Indigenous cultures thrown in. I hesitated about visiting another Orang utan centre but I'm so glad I went because 'Ritchie' the dominant male showed up for a feed of bananas and sugar cane, those animals are awesome up close and personal a little too close at one stage when I decided to make a hasty retreat. I was wondering what to do next when I met up with 3 single women i.e women traveling by themselves, we went to the cultural village for the day and had a hoot visiting traditional longhouses and blowing darts. Some longhouses are as the names suggests ...long with 100 doors, one for each ... read more
