Malaysia continued…. So after a good stay in Malacca we caught the bus to Mersing, ferry for 2 hours to Tioman Island, a 45 minute 4wd journey across the jungly centre of the island to Juara Beach….you really have to want to get there! We had a little wooden hut on a spit at the end of beach with water on three sides …running water but no hot water and a fan and mosquito net but no air-con. Very comfy though and we went to sleep with the sound of the waves plashing on the beach. Interesting group of people staying there…. Swedes, Australians, Brits and two girls working for an NGO on the Thai/Burmese border. Went snorkelling on the big boat one day and the fish were amazing loads of them and every shape and ... read more

We spent 1 week in Kuching, which was both good and bad. When we arrived we could see it was a quiet place, there were no tuks tuks or people trying to sell you things left right and centre, which made a relaxing change. Kuching was a strange place, it appeared as though it was built up rather rapidly to accomodate for a tourist boom, however the tourist industry had died here, and as time went on that just became more and more apparent. There were very few restaurants and the ones we did find weren't good, everywhere closed by 6pm and it was VERY expensive. Beer is more expensive in Kuching than in the UK. Our accomodation was very budget, it was dark, dingy and damp. We were going to treat ourselves and stay in ... read more

On Friday 18th we flew from Johor Bahru in the South of Malaysia to Kuching in Borneo. We arrived quite late at night and we had a bit of déjà vu when our taxi driver didn’t know where the hostel was that we’d planned to stay in (like when we flew into Hong Kong!). On the first day we walked around Kuching getting our bearings and also went to the tourist information office to find out about things to see and do in the area. While we were there we ended up booking to stay in one of the National Parks. So on Sunday off we went on a local bus to Bako National Park. When we finally arrived and registered at the park office we got on to a tiny boat that would only ... read more

We arrived in Kuching from KK - the hostel we'd booked 'Singasanga' was really lovely, the staff are super friendly, the place is decorated so nicely and they have a really cool rooftop bar where we ate/drank lots of vodka watermelon on the first night. We spent the first couple of days exploring the city . Kuching is a really pretty city, very laid back with a waterfront promenade full of places to eat, drink and shop. We stayed in the old town just opposite the river - it has a lot more character and charm than the newer, shopping mall area. We had some really great food in Kuching, there's a really wide variety of Asian food available and we ate some really good Japanese, Chinese (very different from the food we actually had in ... read more

Well it’s been a while since we updated the blog so we are going to do it in two steps - first one about the places we have been and the second about what our thoughts are on the things we have seen Firstly - we decided to change our plans once we left Thailand to go to HK and China. The original plan was to go with a group called Intrepid Travellers and Ian had booked this before we left England. The reason we cancelled that trip (2 nights in Bangkok then to Khao Sok, Penang, Cameron Highlands, Southern Malaysia, Singapore was that we had already done half in Thailand and secondly we realised that it would be very difficult travelling in a group (are we old and cranky and unsociable??) It was actually the ... read more

Borneo!! I arrived in the sunny island after a flight from Langkawi via KL. I am staying first in Kuching, which is the state capital of Sarawak, the southernmost of the two Malaysian states in Borneo. I arrived late at night & headed straight to the hostel, Singgahsana Lodge. The book highly recommended it. It is fantastic - well driven to a travellers needs. It is on 5 floors. A lobby, with internet. two floors of sleeping rooms, and a bar on the top which you have free use of the tv & dvd player (for evenings & when the monsoons set off!) Kuching River runs through the middle of the city, and the lodge is right close to the waterfront area which is well developed and nice to walk around. At night it's lit up ... read more

This morning we went to Semenggoh National Park where the Orangs are semi wild, there are none kept in cages, it is a jungle environment with just a walkway for us to see a feeding platform. As soon as we arrived there were 4 Orangs (2 Mums with their toddlers) we watched them for an hour eating and playing in the trees, it was an incredible sight, we had to leave at 10am to give them some peace. We went back to the lodge where we had the rest of the day to ourselves. Sarah, Gemma and I wandered round Kuching as we had the afternoon to ourselves, we stopped for a late lunch, where I had a coke float which was very questionable!!! We played some cards back at the lodge and some pool. Then ... read more

Laksa is the first thing that comes to my mind when I wake up on a Sunday morning. It's the first word I utter when my eyes open. Both Nee and I like simplicity and consistency. Simplicity and ease in deciding where to eat. Consistency in sticking to the same thing when it's good. Another word for that is just being plain lazy. So every Sunday has become our Laksa day. It makes things simple because we don't have to think about what to eat and where to go. (How to blog like this. Eat also lazy.) I don't know where the word Laksa comes from. I've always thought because it was spicy hot (Lak), you'd stick your tongue out and go 'sa sa'. Silly I know. Nee says: Laksa is very Sarawak Kuching dish. The ... read more
