In the last two days at the centre we finished painting the park sign and enjoyed a few more treats. This included visiting Gunung Gading National Park on Thursday to view the world's largest flower - the Rafflesia which was luckily in flower. The blooms only last for a couple of days and the plants only flower every couple of months so we were very fortunate to see it. Our flower was only 60cm diameter but they can be as big as 90cm wide. We also spent some extra time with Doris - the 7 year old orangutan which was wonderful. Nick played on the ropes, whilst Doris kept flipping backwards onto the ground trying to gain attention. She was in a particularly playful mood (although slightly bitey) - and covered in mud. She is particularly ... read more

Travelled back to Kuching - due to downpour on Sunday morning at Damai! Walked along the riverfront, looked at the waterfront stalls and main bazaar. Then went to pizza restaurant in evening before returning back to a surprise a Matang - unfortunately one of the cats had spent the weekend in our chalet! However Daisy had helped herself to some of our food supplies. We both spent the evening clearing up after this occurrence!... read more

Monday was shopping day and every week we all try to buy something unusual and interesting. This week Ellie bought some green/brown knobbly fruits and it wasn't until we brought them home that we noticed the awful smell. It was very unpleasant - best described as cats urine, rotten eggs or a rubbish bin, and therefore we swiftly removed them from the house and placed them on the veranda. We later found out that these were Durians, a fruit loved by locals and orangutans but not by us! We could still smell them from outside, the smell wafting into our room. So we fed them to Chaim, Doris and Aman who enjoyed the snack! We also managed to gain a quick cuddle from Gus. Apart from the strange fruits, we have also had an escapee on ... read more

One of the best ways to enjoy nature is to take to the water, so today we decided to go Kayaking with Kuching Kayaks.KuchingKayak After being picked up at 8.00am we were taken further out from Kuching to where the river meanders through the forest. Ellie and I had a two man kayak and after safely putting our camera in a watertight box we set off. The journey was fantastic with the river interspersed with logs and stones creating small currents for us to navigate around. After about 45 minutes we stopped for a refreshing swim in the cool waters before heading onwards. Looking up you could see the clear blue sky, between the tree canopy and occasionally the odd bird darting across the sky. On the banks the limestone rocks had been worn into all ... read more

Today we spent the day exploring Kuching further - Cat city! We walked along the river front, viewing the local bazaars and then visited a coffee shop in China town - the street is decorated with numerous Chinese lanterns. A lot of the shops are currently closed at present due to the Chinese New Year celebrations which have lasted a week. Many of the locals release random fireworks in the streets to mark this celebration. Then we took a 30 minute walk to the local weekend market which was heaving with people. On sale were a variety of exotic fruits and vegetables, meat, textiles, crafts, orchids and pets. We also sampled some nut pancakes from one of the stalls. The market is an important social occasion for many of the locals, full of bright colours and ... read more

It has been another eventful week at Matang Wildlife Centre. We have continued our work improving the Sun Bear enclosure, making platforms and building steps. We have also been decorating the orangs indoor enclosures. Nick has rediscovered his artistic talents and has painted rainforest flowers, a beach/rainforest scene and some modern art, whilst Ellie has focused on the more funky designs. Orangs see in colour so painting their sleeping quarters adds extra interest to their environment when they are not in their enclosures. Unfortunately when painting an orangutans den, it is not as easy as it seems. We had a little help from Doris who kept on flicking mud at us and from baby Mamu who was climbing above us and occasionally decided to release herself on you if you happened to be in the wrong ... read more

The first few days of the week have been quite eventful for one of the cats in our street..... There are several cats who live at Matang and they all have very interesting personalities. Firstly there is the Daisy family - Daddy Daisy, Mummy Daisy, Baby Daisy and Baby Daisy's babies - they are all tabbies and some have short tails which bend oddly at the ends - this apparently is some sort of genetic characteristic of these local cats. Secondly there is Lewis, a black & white rival male to daddy Daisy and lastly there is Wanda a beautiful tortoiseshell..... On our arrival back from Bako on Sunday we were greeted by the Sound of Meowing from the house opposite which belongs to the other volunteers. Unfortunately after further investigation it appeared that Wanda must ... read more

It's Friday night and we're off out tonight to a local restaurant owned by an Englishman which serves western food and tapas - a nice break from rice and noodles! It has been a rewarding and challenging but we have both learnt a lot of new things and hopefully we have made a difference to the animals' wellbeing at the centre. The days normally start at 8.00am with cleaning out the Sun Bears and monkeys in the quarantine area. This is normally followed either by babysitting 'Gus' the baby orangutan or helping Lisa with the environmental enrichment programme. This may involve collecting grass or leaves for the cages, preparing food parcels & hiding them, or placing balls in the cages with corn or seeds inside so the animals have to work a bit harder to obtain ... read more

After a restful night at the hostel we were transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre. As we travelled along the roads we saw local houses and we were surrounded by mountains covered in a mass of lush vegetation. After a brief stop to pick up provisions for the week we arrived at our new home - a wooden chalet on stilts with a veranda at the front - basic but comfortable & a lovely cooling cold shower! We are sharing our accommodation with two other volunteers - everyone is very friendly! The work is very hard - reconstructing the sunbear den, building play equipment for the orangutans who then promptly destroy our efforts by unscrewing the bolts or pulling the rope apart! Of course then there is the daily cleaning and maintenance of the enclosures followed by ... read more

Took Air Asia this morning across to Kuching, Borneo - Cat City - the place to be if you like cats - there are statues everywhere! We arrived at a boutique hostel in the city centre - very nice rustic furniture & wooden floors. Then we walked alongside the muddy coloured river, lined with cafes and stalls, to see the sights, with magnificent mountains acting as a backdrop. The architecture is a mix of colonial buildings, Chinese temples, mosques - all very beautiful & not as expected! The city is composed of numerous tribes, who all live in harmony alongside each other, with a population size of approx 500,000 within Kuching itself. It started to pour down with rain - a welcome relief as this caused the temperature to become more comfortable. In the afternoon we ... read more
