Left Sacramento at 9:30 yesterday, Here in the Singapore airport (house-sized orchid display surrounding a Koi pond in the middle of the airport... The plants are healthy and real, no plastic here) working till my batteries go. Got a lot of sleep on the ten hour flight from LA to Tokyo and 6 hour fromTokyo to Singapore.. caught up some for the nearly sleepness night getting ready... still have to catch a flight to Kuala Lumpur at 7, then from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching so should be in my hotel by 3.. It's almost fun to feel a little scruffy.. probably nothing like I'll feel on the backpack trip in Kuching. T... read more

Here Kitty Kitty At the western tip of Borneo lies the quaintly modern city of Kuching. Known as the "cat city" I knew I was going to like it before I'd even arrived. We flew in at night, prime prowling time for cats and within minutes of stepping out of the airport taxi we spotted our first cat! A cement block was missing in the sidewalk, exposing the gutter below and here sat a sleek calico peering down, waiting patiently, for tasty rats or mice. Mind you this wasn't really a unique experience, but I remember it vividly being in the "cat city." Daybreak provided more cat sightings: huge cat statues with whiskers made of thick wire were in the middle of round-abouts and intersections. They were hard to miss. We also made a worthwhile trip ... read more

Its true and Kuching is totally cat orientated, they have a Museum of Cats and cat statues all over the place. This city is really attractive probably more so then KK, I am amazed as most Asian cities just arent. On arrival from the airport I went wandering around for quite a while, I was trying to find a Lonely Planet book for Indonesia as I go there in a few days and I wanted to go to Mcdonalds, I have never been a big fan of Asian food and I am getting sick of chicken and rice. Although saying that I am looking forward to Soto Ayam when I get to Indo. I then wandered along the river front and checked out the antique shops, I found a great sword but am reluctant to risk ... read more

We were met in Kuching by Wesley, one of the owners of a hostel we’d booked into via their website. He gave us a mini tour of the city on the way to the hostel, showing us some great restaurants and giving us local tips- very kind of him! At the hostel we signed in as guests numbers 7 and 8 in their register. The hostel was only 2 months old and we were the only guests!. Wesley gave us the keys, maps of the city (and he marked everything on them we could possibly need) told us he may not be there every day and if we wanted to check out, to just leave our money and keys. Bliss! Our own apartment, virtually! We didn’t have a kitchen but still, the privacy was lovely. ... read more

UntitledThe last time I wrote my blog I was in Kuching waiting to visit a Taoist psychic session. Since then I have broken the CD containing the only copies of my photos (FUCK!), visited a tribe, scuba dived and read a couple of books. My lack of updates has been because of busyness, tiredness and lacking of internet cafes. So today I have done 4 and dated them roughly from when I wrote them. On the 8th june at about 9pm Ho Minh (my link to the psychic world of Borneo) picked up me, Harriet and Paddy. Harriet and Paddy were a dutch/english couple who stayed at the same backpackers and had witnesed the whole Jade debaucle and expressed interest in the paranormal. Ho drove us to his brothers house where we had an hour to ... read more

We landed in Kuching about 10.30am & by the time we had got our bags, got the bus into town & walked to the hostel it was just before midday. We had a shower & then had a sleep as spending the night in the airport never gets you a good night sleep but works out more cost efficient. We ended up sleeping till about 3.30pm, a combination of the heat & tiredness had made us sleep for a good three hours. We headed out to explore Kuching, we had a look around a couple of shopping malls, as Kuching is supposed to be a good place to buy in Borneo, although we didn't buy anything. We went to a bar for dinner & were told of a special promotion, for 25 Ringitt each, (just ... read more

We had spent Tuesday night in the Kota Kinabalu airport where there we no restaurants open, so by the time we had boarded the airplane we were starving, we ordered some noodles and a sandwich each, which hardly touched the sides they went down so fast. It was then a short bus journey to Kuching town centre and we had no problem finding some accommodation. The first thing we did was to have a power nap as we hadn't got much sleep the night before. We woke up around 3pm and decided to head out, we walked along the waterfront which was quite scenic and made our way to several shopping centres but nothing caught our eye. We had dinner at a lovely grill place where we had a Carlsberg buffet, yes all you could ... read more

So after a long flight from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur (KL) then KL to Kuching we finally made it to Borneo. Great flight with Malaysian Airlines - nice food for a change and great choice of stop/start movies. I didnt sleep as watched atleast 5!!! Kuching is in Sarawak - Malaysian Borneo and this is where our travels begin. Stayed in Anglican Guest House - very basic, very cheap 25 RM which is about 4pounds for the 2 of us! The shower was basically a hose pipe stuck on the wall. Am taking this roughing it well so far, well it is only day1! ... read more
