We landed in Kuching about 10.30am & by the time we had got our bags, got the bus into town & walked to the hostel it was just before midday. We had a shower & then had a sleep as spending the night in the airport never gets you a good night sleep but works out more cost efficient.
We ended up sleeping till about 3.30pm, a combination of the heat & tiredness had made us sleep for a good three hours. We headed out to explore Kuching, we had a look around a couple of shopping malls, as Kuching is supposed to be a good place to buy in Borneo, although we didn't buy anything. We went to a bar for dinner & were told of a special promotion, for 25 Ringitt each, (just under 4 British Pounds) we could drink as much Carlsberg for the rest of the evening, of course we took up this generous offer & spent the evening drinking & playing cards with a bit of dinner somewhere in the middle.
The best bit was they forgot to charge us for the food & so only ended up paying for the beer, we
were quite merry when we left & raided 7/11 for water & ribenna on the way home, (obviously we paid for that!). We attempted to take some photos of the river at night but it was too dark & we were too tipsy.
On Thursday we got up at 10am, had breakfast & then walked to the Reservoir Park, we had a walk around & played on the park, it was fun. We visited the Hero's Monument for some photos & then went to the Old & New Sarawak Museum. We saw lots of stuffed animals in the one site & in the other site there was a Dinosaur exhibition which was for children but I really enjoyed it; obviously I am a big kid, (it was educational & fun)!
We went shopping along the waterfront & went in almost every shop about 3 times deciding what we were going to buy. We had a late lunch & discussed what we were going to get & made a shopping list each. After lunch we went back & got all the things we wanted, (again I was buying loads of stuff for a house I don't even have, at
least when I get a place I won't have to buy an ornaments or decorations!)
I purchased a wooden ornament of a tribal man, a bamboo table runner, some wooden spoons, a bowl (made of cinnamon), candle holders, a silver bangle & loads of other stuff. I think it cost me more to post the stuff home than it actually cost for all the things I got!
On Friday we went to Bako National Park, we got up at 8am, got ready & headed to the bus station, by this time it was 10am, the bus took an hour & we had to get a boat into the Park when we arrived at Park HQ so it was 11.30am when we actually arrived. The scenery was beautiful, the park is right on the coastline & there were fantastic views.
We had lunch & headed out walking at 12.15, first we did the Tanjung Sapi trail which took us about 30 minutes there & back to a viewpoint over the jungle & the coast. Next we did part of the Lintang trail to take us to the Telok Delima Trail into the mangrove forest; we found a little
hermit crab & some nice photo opportunities amongst some streams & mini waterfalls.
We then went along the Telok Assam Trail which took us up a massive hill, I don't think I have ever been so hot in my life, it was so humid in the jungle, I thought I might faint at one point. When we got to the top there was a fantastic viewpoint over the sea, the jungle & the hills, it was so peaceful so we sat & relaxed up there for about half an hour & nobody came up to the viewpoint while we were there.
We had seen a viper snake before we set off on our walks so we went back to have a look at him & he had turned around so we could see his face so that was a good photo. We got a cold sprite each from the canteen & sat outside in the shade. Claire had started to write in her journal & the monkeys were roaming around the table. One made a mad dash for our table & I said to Claire "Watch him" as I grabbed my can, just then he landed on our
table grabbed Claire's almost full can of sprite as Claire said "Watch what?" & he ran off to sit on the ledge with it. He looked like he enjoyed it anyway & poured the contents of it all up his arm & then licked it off.
We got the bus & boat back, while we were waiting for the bus we were chatting to some local men outside the Park HQ & one had got a cobra in a cage with a squirrel, the man had caught the snake around the local village & the snake & squirrel seemed to get on quite well considering!
We headed out for some food after we had showered & then got some beers from 7/11 & played cards in our room.
On Saturday we had breakfast & headed to the post office to post all our purchases home & then walked in the pouring rain to the bus station & got the bus to Kuching Cat Museum, (Kuching means cat in Malay). When we got there a show was just about to start that is only performed on a Saturday so we decided to watch.
As we walked into
the theatre we got started at, (being the only white people in the audience). The show started & there we lots of people dancing around dressed as cats, they came out into the audience & of course when they spotted us they homed in & grabbed Claire & got her up on stage, I was loving this as I could just sit & cheer. They made her dance a bit & then blow into a pipe that shot a dart at balloons, I was very impressed that she popped the balloons with the dart from some distance away, the crowd were obviously very impressed as well & Claire got to keep the dart, I cheered like a proud parent. We had a look around the museum after the show, which took all of about 5 minutes & was terrible, at least the show was a bit more entertaining.
We had lunch & got the bus back into Kuching Centre; as we were waiting for the bus every other car would beep, wave or even stop just to have a good look at us. We found an internet place when we got back to Kuching & spent the rest of
the afternoon there.
I enjoyed our stay in Kuching, it was really nice & we don't get hassled as much as we did in Sabah which is better, it will be so strange when we get to Australia & don't get treated any differently, (well maybe a bit differently).
