Langkawi From Koh Lipe we hopped onto a boat to Langkawi, only 1 and a half hours, so it was a quick journey. Arriving we travelled by taxi to our Zackry Guesthouse, this was like being back in total civilisation. Having lived for the past 12 days on an island with no roads, no banks, no buildings above 2 floors, no nightclubs, no hot water and no shoes needed and little clothing, here it was like having luxury accommodation and back to normality. We had an en suite with a hot water shower, the toilet flushed and most importantly we had free tea, coffee and wifi!!! So we settled in comfortably. We did our usual wondering about the local area, backpacker tourist zone, and found numerous tourist shops, bars and restaurants. There was a huge ... read more

Today was the day we actually got to explore Penang. I’ve decided the “shower/trickle” will now be the predictor of what our day will hold. Thank goodness that this morning our shower was fully functioning, with hot water. It was going to be a good day. We awoke to the sight of a man sleeping directly across from us in the middle of the pavement, unaware of people traipsing around him. Not prepared to get caught out with buses again, our first mission of the day was to sort out transport to Trang in Southern Thailand. Like all good kiwis we decided the information office was the place to go, and after grabbing some bake and take (yummy, yummy rolls) for brekkie we meandered down the back streets of George town, taking in the sights and ... read more

Well, after a hellingshly long bus trip on the dirtiest bus in Malaysia (with no air-con again), I finally arrived in the island of Penang. The island is linked to the mainland by bridge so the entire journey was made on the bus. As I arrived around 9pm in the evening I decided to stay in the Georgetown, the main town, for the first night as all I wanted after that 7 hour bus journey was a some food, a cold beer, and a bed to lay down on. I stayed in a hotel called Blue Diamond which was in Chinatown area of Georgetown - I heard a bustling busy place with a colourful side late at night (so the taxi driver told me). When I told him the name of my hotel he said 'oh, ... read more

Hello all, We have reached Penang and are having a lovely restful time. We've continued to be very lucky with the weather with only maybe 1/2 hour of tropical rain. I got burnt to a crisp lying near the pool on the second day and am paying for it! We went on a bus tour of the Island and visited a snake temple - Peter kept a wide birth of the snakes - I was reassured by the knowledge that the snakes hade been defanged and took the plunge and had a python around my neck and 2 vipers on my head - Peter took the photo from outside! The shopping has been GREAT!! They set up street markets all the way down the street that our hotel is on and Peter and I have taken ... read more

It was an Installation Dinner for IPG 2. Out with the old, In with the new. The 2006/2007 excos has done exceptionally well but it is time to give opportunities to even more new leaders. After all, this is what Toastmasters are for! I arrived late. Everyone had started eating but I got to sit with Joan Chan, a very distinguished person and also a great photogrpaher, Chris who happened to also be the Area Governor this new term. One of the game which was played was the sit the balloon game. Everyone had loads of fun. Some dare not sit on them, some sat but the balloons 'ran away' and some even put two balloons at the same time! What a game! My table / team won the game and we got each a few ... read more

Flight from KL was quick and easy. Ferringhi beach is what we were expecting, except perhaps a bit less infrastructure. The beach is a bit disappointing in that it is not the cleanest, but from a distance it is pretty. Saying that we have spent most of our time on the beach, which is quite quiet since most people seem to stay around the hotel pools. The resort comes alive after 8pm. There is a good night market which lines the main street, selling the usual counterfeit DVD’s, T shirts and souvenirs. Found number one copies of both our Dads watches and the Orange Omega Seamaster Planet, which James was tempted by, but at £25 managed to resist, though we probably would have got it cheaper had we bartered. Hi fam and friends, We bought our tickets to Bangkok yesterday folks. This is just right for us because we are tierd of long travel times and really want to see Thailand while we are so close. One trip from Penang Island to Bangkok Thailand is 45 minutes! Can you believe it!! We inquired at a travel agent about the price of a plane ticket to Bangkok. He quoted us 500 rm per person. No WAY! We motorscootered to the Airport and found flights to Bangkok for 207 rm per person (approx 70 US dollars) on Air Asia flights. Our flight leaves tomorrow at 10:30am. We will enjoy Penang Island one last day and then head for our next destination. -Lara and Andy FYI - We heard earlier that Air Asia had inexpensive flights to Bangkok ... read more

Greetings from Penang Island. Yesterday we took a cable car to the top of Penang Hill where there was the best view of Penang Island. Check out our pics! Info about Penang Hill: Other Name: Bukit Bendera Height: 830 meter high (2,750 foot) Excerpt from tourismpenang.gov.my According to history books, it was Francis Light who first plotted a pack-horse track to Penang Hill from the Botanic Gardens waterfall way back in 1788. During the 19th century, British colonials built bungalows on the hill for private use. Even during the early part of the 20th century, the bungalows on higher ground were home to planters and administrators while the rich Chinese towkays built theirs, which were no less grandiose, on the way up the hill. for more information go to: http://www.tourismpenang.gov.my/article.cfm?id=74 ... read more

Today we decided to rent a scooter for the weekend. (80 RM for 48 hrs.) We figure since we are paying money for bus fare & taxis, we might as well enjoy it. (Bus fare 1-3 RM per person; taxi 4-25 Rm, it all adds up) Scooters are very common here in Malaysia. You see 1 to 4 persons (family of 4; Mom, Dad and two children) on them frequently. Sometimes we see Mother and Father with a one year old in between. Its very scary... Anyway, today was a fun experience. We went along one side of the Island dodging and swerving thru traffic. Its amazing how well this little scooters get thru traffic even if you are lost. There is alot of one ways... that makes it easy. After a stroll down the ... read more
