Uwahair....only tourist in town... This afternoon I arrived in Flores, a small island in Indonesia. The airport consisted of a short runway in a field and one building. The luggage gets put onto this 12 foot conveyor belt...not much unlike the supermarket checkout!. I was a bit reluctant to leave the safety of the airport as there was about 50 taxi drivers outside - and as only 4 tourists got off the plane - like lambs to the slaughter!! Fortunatley as I was contemplating how I was going to escape the frenzy outside a man came over and flashed a card for Sunset Cottages - which co-incidently was exactly where I was off to! Sunset Cottages aka "The End of the Earth" is fabulous! Its in this tiny town called Uwahair, I had a tiny bamboo ... read more

Not long after my blog yesteray I was taken down by a mystery illness that involved alot of vomiting and very little eating. luckily i was well by morning, just in time to make it to my dive refresher course. The morning involved a quick session in the pool and then a break for lunch before going out for our first ive back in the ocean. We went to a dive site just on the other side of Trawangan, called Halik Reef and Wall. We were down for about an hour and saw all sorts of sea life including turtles, reef sharks, and even an angry mother trigger fish who attacked us. I start my Advanced Open Water Course tomorrow. A deep water dive at 9am, a navigational dive at 1pm and then a night dive ... read more

I won't lie...I'm actually in paradise. When you think of a beach paradise you picture an island with white sand beaches, hammocks, thatched platforms with pillows overlooking the crystal blue water and parties until the early hours of the morning. This place exists. I know this, because I'm there! Off to coast of Lombok lies a chain of islands known as the Gili Islands. Each with its own distinct character and personality. Gili Meno, a ghost town with so few people you can go for days without seeing anyone. Gili Air, a fun little island with a carefree attitude. And Gili Trawangan, the upbeat of the three full of travelers from all over the world, here to dive, to surf, to eat, to drink and most of all to have fun all day everyday until the ... read more

Gunung Bromo We arrived at the town of Probolinggo at 1:30 in the morning after 10 hours on the bus from Bali. At this time it would have been possible to continue straight on to Gunung Bromo (the whole point in us being here) to catch the sunrise but as we were both completely knackered from getting no sleep on the bus we decided we’d wait a day and do it the next morning, so we’d feel a little more refreshed and maybe more appreciative of what we were seeing. Our first task was to find somewhere to catch some shut eye, which wasn’t too much of a problem and then spent the rest of the day wandering round the town, still trying to get used to being an attraction in ourselves to the local people. ... read more

Our last night at Singapore was amazing as we were invited by Jon's friends Ant and Daph for a traditional BBQ. The amount of food that was cooked was more than even Jon's whole family could eat. Top quality steaks, prawns the size of my hand (Dad and Matt you would be in heaven). Thank you very much Ant and Daph. After deciding to save on some cash by sleeping at the airport (not as bad as Geneva Hutch!!!), we have arrived in Bali. The journey was only two and a half hours on the plane. Staying at a nice hotel, which is only $35 a night, and is a ten minute walk from Kuta Beach. However on this walk you will be asked about fifty times to buy a bracelet, sunglasses or fake rolex (there ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated here in a while. I have been a little busy and could blame the temperamental internet but still have had plently of time really so that's no excuse. The rainy season has properly started here now and it rains practically every afternoon. Normally accompanied by thunderstorms. Even last week after what seemed like not much rain there has already been a lot of flooding all over the city so I dread to think what's it's going to be like after a few more weeks of it. The city's administration claim to be trying to do something about it, but I've seem pictures on the news of them 'working' on widening one channel and that seems to be it!! Apparently most of the flood channels that do exist are blocked with rubbish and ... read more

Bali: Being the laid back pair that we are we were the last to get in the ques for our visas having arrived at Bali airport on the last flight for the evening. Given that it was the last flight and we were the last to have our visas processed, we were also the last to leave the airport and so were lucky to catch the last lone taxi driver who was kind enough to drive us all around Kuta looking for a place to stay (being so laid back we hadn't booked anywhere to stay!!). Unfortunately it was a public holiday in Bali and many places were fully booked but eventually we ended up in the Malasti Resort just outside of Kuta, a lovely place. The following day was Dani's birthday so Rach kitted out ... read more

I think we were surprised to learn that Bali was not typically Indonesian but an unusual island with a mixture of Hindi and indigenous culture. Bali is an anomaly – not only is it the only Hindu enclave in the world’s biggest Muslim nation, but the Hinduism practised here would be unrecognisable in India, flavoured as it is by Buddhism and, more significantly, animism. The people of Bali worship the big things - the trees, rocks and, most importantly, the mountain. We left the boat by tender and landed at a resort village where we were greeted by an extremely friendly reception organised by the ship's agents, but also to unbelievable levels of hassle by local sales people, of which more later. We were herded onto the coach for the tour (we had used some more ... read more

Kaixo Danoi! Balitik berriro, Kutatik konkretuki. Aurrekoan esan bezala hemen ez dugu aparteko gauzarik egiten, ondo gozaldu, surfa egin, nahi dugun tokian bazkaldu, siestak, irakurri, surfa berriro (Ibaik nik baino gehigao, nahiko alper nabil, jeje), berreiro ederto afaldu, pelikulak pantaila handian ikusi eta ohera. Ondoko hondartzetara joaten gara gure motorrinoan, Changu, Balangan, Dreamland, Uluwatu (hemen ez gara bainatzen, jeje)... Egia esan ez gara hurrun joaten. Atzokoa izan zen irkan egin dugun irteera bakarra: sumendi batera igo ginen. Sumendi piloa dago Indonesian, Javako irlan are gehiago eta hemen Balin famatuak bi, guk igo genuena eta 3000m ko beste bat. Kontua da 3000m koa sakratuena dela eta egun hauetan zerbait ospatzen ari direnez ezin dela bertara igo. Lombok ere, ondoko irla oso polita omen da eta bertara joateko asmua genuen, Gili irletara ere... baina oso gustor... read more
