Whilst in Indonesia, I took an internal flight with some Indonesian airline I had never heard of. I have no fear of flying, yet I was slightly concerned about this flight. Indonesian airlines have one of the worst safety records in the world. None of them are permitted to fly into ANY European Airport because of this. Apparently, when European airlines remove their planes from service, they sell them to the Russians. When the Russians have finished with them, they sell them to Indoneisa. Or so the rumour goes Here are a few stories I have heard about whilst in Indonesia.... 1. Pilots from an Indonesian airline recently went on strike and refused to fly. The airline had wanted them to skip the pre-flight safety checks so they could have a faster turnaround of flights 2. ... read more

I figured out this whole internet scheme. They charge you 500 rupiah/minute with a 10 minute minimum. The dial-up however loads about a page every ten minutes and before you know it, you've written 2 sentences, your page freezes and your back to square one. Their is moaning coming from the computer next to me..i think Crystal's computer is having a seizure. One day when we find DSL I can tell stories of small waves, volcano hiking and snorkeling on the reef...one day! Love you all!... read more

I write this because I know the issue often comes up when people are planning to go to Eastern Indonesia. I have just returned from a holiday in Maluku 3 weeks in November 06. While I do not have Bahsa we meet up with some knowledgeable people on the subject of the conflict. Dutch Mulukans, local English speakers Europeans trying to run businesses in the area, People who came there for Holidays every year and only missed one year during the conflict and extended conversations with a Dutch journalist, she spends much of her time in Muluku covering the area including being there during the conflict and in East Timor during the war, These are my opinions on the security situation, formed from observations and conversations. It goes without saying that you decide for yourself. The ... read more

The bus from Ruteng to Labuanbajo took about four hours, and Jeff and I sat near the front, constantly readjusting our feet so as not to burn them on the hot engine that churned beneath the metal bus floor. A woman nursed a week-old baby in the seat in front of us, apparently traveling back home after a trip to the hospital in Ruteng for a C-section. (We learned this from her husband, who was clearly very proud of the fact, and made elaborate tummy-slicing motions on his own stomach by way of demonstration.) Nearby, a couple held onto their two young sons, both dressed in orange T-shirts. One of these boys was absolutely terrified of Jeff. Every single time he glanced in Jeff's direction, he burst into horrified tears and grabbed at his mother in ... read more

Reluctantly our time in Boracay had come to an end. After trying many restaurants on the beach strip we concluded the best food was at the Sports Bar Formula 1 Restaurant (an unlikely name for a restaurant with such good food and presentation - just ask Donna about the grouper with mustard sauce, mmm). When we were photographing some of our dishes, the chef came over to introduce himself (5 star hotel quality and presentation). We recommend this as the best quality for value in Boracay. Meals, entrees and drinks for two typically came to 800 php - AUD$20! On Sunday 28 Oct we left the Tonglen hotel by motorbike side-car taxi, boat across to Caticlan and 1.5 hr bus trip to Kalibo airport for our flight to Manila. Next time we come to the Philippines ... read more

A few facts and observations about Indonesia... 1. The most expensive coffee in the world comes from Indonesia. It is called Kopi Luwak, or Civet Coffee, and is made from coffee berries which have passed through the digestive tract of the Palm Civet Cat. The inner coffee bean is not digested by the cat, and it is thought that the resulting coffee bean tastes better. So folks, Civet Coffee is coffee from a cat's butt. 2. Indonesians are crazy about iced tea. Plain, lemon, orange, iced green tea, even carbonated! Carbonated tea, whatever next 3. Once upon a time on Bali, there was no concept of art. All the striking "artwork" that was produced was functional, and nothing had ever been produced previously just for aesthetic value 4. There are four different greetings in Indonesian. It's pretty fair to say we both like Bali. For one thing it's very, very cheap here. We thought Thailand was cheap but Bali is even cheaper. So far on our travels we have stayed in some 'average accommodation' but in Bali we have struck lucky. We are staying in a resort (booked through a hostel website) that is almost 5 star. We have a huge air conditioned room with a decent sized bathroom and our own balcony overlooking the pool, gardens and sunset over Kuta beach. The resort is more famous locally for being a spa so we took advantage of this and had a balinese massage each... what an experience! The Balinese people are really friendly and cannot do enough to help, unfortunately for every ten helpful people there is one that rips you ... read more

(continued...) You don't have to think about it to define it: it's the "grass is always greener" phenomenon. What you have to think about is how to change this phenomenon into one that's going to make you a happier, better person. Isn't that what everyone wants: to be happy? Ask anybody what the secret of life is and they'll either say "to be happy," to something that basically means "to be happy." So why are so many people just not happy with their lives? Sure some are, but many people are wishing or dreaming for something else, and usually blaming something about their current life for the reason why they're not as happy as they could be. You don't have to be sad, depressed, or miserable to 'not be happy'. I mean, my life is great, ... read more

So lets sum this little expedition up. I won't lie, I pictured a white sand beach, a hammock and a corona. We got off the plane to a loud, overcrowded, polluted beach city, Kuta...and we were immediately swarmed by everyone and their dog - literally, trying to help us; find a hotel, get a taxi or whatever it was they were selling. Our cab driver from the airport was hilarious, if we took a tour, his wife would do our laundry free of charge. Sounded like a good deal to me. It didn't take us very long to decide we needed to get out of there, we met up with a local (we call him Boss) and he got us a cheap place to stay and the next day comes on an expedition to buy boards. ... read more

So here we are, the start of our Asian adventure, our true travel love. Thankfully we’ve chosen an entry destination that’s as touristy as it gets, easing us into the changes required to travel in a less ‘developed’ continent. Kuta/South Bali We started here, in South Bali, the throbbing beat of the island, where the majority of people stay to either catch a wave or chill on the beach. It’s a pretty exciting place, heavily overdeveloped with everything a visitor could ever need or want; we wandered around checking out the myriad of shops and getting overly excited by the incredibly low prices of things. We also spent some time on the beach, where I rented a board to go give the surf a try. It turns out I’m really not very good, I don’t have ... read more
