I have visited quite a few places the past few weeks and haven't written about them yet,.. Kuala Lumpur, Bandung, Limbangan.., i think I'll put the photos in separate blogs now though as otherwise this one could be quite long... This weekend I went to visit Widi's home village of Limbangan again. That's the village that we are trying to set up a conservation project in and they were having a big celebration for the village's birthday so a good opportunity to promote conservation to the villagers. On Friday were the main celebrations, this started with a big parade through the village. The village chief and wife and a few other men from the village committee were dressing in traditional Javanese clothes and so the chief's wife took me to get ready with her. They did ... read more

Batam is one of the 3,000 islands which make up the Riau Archipelago and is closest to Singapore which is only 5o minutes away by ferry (Batam Fast). the island is developing into a major tourist destination because of its proximity to Singapore. Many tourists come from nearby Singapore for a short holiday, duty free shopping and great seafood. For instance, in our tour group, me and my friend were the only Filipinos out of 12 people. the rest were singaporeans who were having holiday at the Holiday Inn and other hotels. Despite the budding economy, Batam retains the rural charm, peaceful spots with quiet beaches. Fishing villages supply delicious seafood to visitors. We had our sumptous lunch at Golden Prawn restaurant. While in Batam, we visited Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, one of the largest ... read more

Full Moon Mushrooms... The Full Moon Party was brilliant! Had a couple of mushroom shakes before we went out, felt like I was getting motion sickness as we got the horse and carriage down to the party. Well maybe it was more like a donkey and cart...the only way to travel bar push bike in Gilly T as there are no cars and motorbikes. The mushroom shakes here are nowhere near as yummy as in Laos. They mix it with coke and it kind of curdles and tastes fowl! Holod your nose and down the hatch! We met up with this Italian guy called Itscio, 54 yrs, married 15 days who danced ALL night until the sun came up over Mount Rinjini in Lombok. His wife wasn't in the Gilly's with him, she was meeting him ... read more

Gilly T...for some R & R...or so that was the plan! I arrived at Gilly Trawangan this evening! The bus journey turned out ok, got 2 seats to myself, popped 2 valium stretched out and slept the whole way. Didn't even wake up when the bus boarded a ferry bound for Lombok. Gilly Trawangan looks just the same as it did last May. The boat on the way over broke down for half an hour...I don't have much luck with boats. The boat guy recommended his friends bungalows, turns out they are the cheapest on the island. Its not too bad, vast improvement on 'Horse Shit' in Bajawa. I headed out for a walk and stumbled across a bar called Ocean, met a girl called V from South Africa, tonight we are off to the Full ... read more

Hi again, our hotel, Alam Shanti, had room for us for 3 nights only, so we switched to one of its sister hotels, Alam Indah, which is less grand. Our room is less than half the size of our last and has, alas, only one shower (the other had 2 with multiple heads - heavenly), but everything about this place just feels so much more exotic. Every wooden surface is deeply carved and the carving is on a much finer and more detailed scale. The hotel is built into the side of a wide gorge (not a ravine, you'll notice), with enormous trees shading it. And every night there is a double ballet performed over the gorge, first by scores of swallows and then by bats wheeling and swirling over it. One night as the moon came ... read more

Day 69 4 am start to drive to the ferry from Sumatra to Bali, and on to Kuta, the main tourist area in the south west of Bali. Many houses have intricate shrines, on which offerings of fruit and flowers are put out, as well as on the pavements. We met up with the breakaway group, who have been here for a few days already, and they found us a much nicer hotel hat the one we were booked into. Most of the group met up, but as I felt poorly I went to bed early. One of our number was hospitalised for a few hours. She had been unwell for a few days and her symptoms seemed malaria-like, so the tour manager suggested she seek medical advice. They ran some tests on her, and put ... read more

After five days in the busy Kuta, we decided to head south of the island to a highly recommended destination. This place being dreamland!!! We stayed in a hut which was ten metres away from the sea, so waking up in the morning Jon had the chance to check out the waves just by lifting the blind up! It only cost us Five pound a night to stay there and the food was stupidly cheap (2 mains and 2 large beers was less than four pound.) We only planned on staying a couple of days but we made friends with the people who owned and worked there and so stayed much longer. We found out though whilst we were there and talking to some snobby american girls that on 28th November Dreamland will be closing FOREVER!!! ... read more

The long journey ahead.... I'm 2 hours into this 30 hour journey to Mataram. I took the local ferry as I had missed the other boats as they only leave once a week. The ferry stinks, I'm sat on a rickety old plastic chair and I don't even want to find out about the toilets, I wonder if I can hold it for the next 6 hours?? I can see a 'first class'area aka a room with sofer seats - I might try and sneak in. 6 hours later we have docked in Sumbawa. I have successfully not gone to the toilet...much to my dismay there is no toilet at the ferry dock...so another few hours to wait.. Bima is over-run by goats, they are everywhere, running around eating everything. Its a very strict Muslim island, ... read more
