We left my sisters to catch a plane from Brisbane at 23.45. As per normal muggins couldn't sleep. The others managed to get a few hours each. We arrived in Singapore early, 4.45 am and then sorted out some of our fly miles with Singapore air. I also needed to get some US dollars for the entry visas. I was trying to lie down to get some sleep when the gate for the plane opened. We got on the plane. I was trying to watch a film called "Stardust" which I had watched half of on the first flight. I didn't manage to watch all of it but will definately be watching it again. Fantastic film. We arrived and hadn't been given a boarding card on the plane. We were blissfully unaware that we needed one. ... read more

Well, our Christmas Day was a little different to the usual! - We went body boarding on Kuta Beach! Unfortunately we don't have any photos because we couldn't take our cameras with us - bit tricky keeping them dry! In the evening we went out to a restaurant called Nero for a really nice meal and some very good red wine and cigars (Sel). Getting there and back was interesting... the monsoon rain that had been pouring down all day (including when we were body boarding!) had flooded all the streets! So a bit of wading was required! And we got a lift home on the back of one of the waiter's mopeds which was fun! We spent most of boxing day shopping and eating! And then yesterday (27th) we got the bus from Kuta to ... read more

Turen fra oen Samosir var en af de frygteligeste oplevelser for os begge! Vi havde bestemt os for at blive paa Sumatra (Indonesien) i yderligere nogle dage for at se hvad mere denne spaendende oe havde at byde paa.

I only stayed here for a few days but it was still good. There is loads to do here and it is really cheap. Tried out some of my surfing skills and got a moped for the day (which i managed to fall off) to see as much of the beautiful island as i could. It was a bit tuch and go on the bike in Kuta, those people are crazy and there are no rules. Managed to get to a few temples and found more than a few rice fileds to photograph. However i don't have any photo's yet as i am having trouble with getting them off my memory card.... read more

COMMON BIRDS ARE RARE IN THE FAR EAST -- Chhanda Bewtra One of the joys of birding in a new country is to ‘discover’ the common ‘new’ birds (so-called ‘trash birds’) easily seen all around. I have always enjoyed seeing them in my trips to India, Africa and Australia. And I was expecting a similar bonanza in Indonesia during my recent trip there. But I was sadly disappointed. Indonesia is a huge country of 18,000+ islands and zillion miles of shoreline spread along the equator. It has the rainforest second only to the Amazons and the country straddles the famous Wallace Line dividing Asian flora and fauna from that of Australia. My trip was not a strictly birding trip. We were mostly busy in scientific meeting, sight seeing, eating, beachcombing and shopping. Still, I carried ... read more

We booked our transport out of Ubud, relieved we were leaving and hopefully looking forward to some nice weather at the beach for Christmas. We were more prepared this time around for the journey to be a hassle but it actually wasn't as bad as we expected. We arrived in plenty of time for the ferry and even had time to have a banana jaffle for breakfast. For those not acquainted with jaffles, they are simply toasties...the Indonesians though take toasties to a whole new level putting bananas, pineapple, egg and various other things in them. Banana jaffles, in our opinion, are definitely the best followed closely by ham and cheese! Anyhow, we were only a little worried arriving onto Gili Trawangan on 20th December with no accommodation booked after our experience of the hotel owners ... read more

Merry Christmas from Bali!!! Our flight arrived late at night on the 18th into Denpasar airport - where we were met in arrivals by a guy with our names on a board! How exciting! Bruce (Sel's uncle) had very kindly arranged for someone to pick us up and take us to the hotel (Sri Rathi) in Ubud. Such a contrast to our Singapore hostel where there were 20 other beds in the room! Beautiful garden, pool and good breakfast! It was great to meet up with Bruce again and to meet little Joey and Nita! We spent a few days in Ubud wandering around the numerous little shops selling arts and crafts - a lot of hand carved wood and stone etc. And we had some amazing food for ridiculously cheap prices! In a restaurant called ... read more

I reached Kuta ... easy. The waves at Kuta itself are pretty lame but there is a good choice of spots both to the east and to the west. Air Goleng is a little sea weed farming village with a quality right and left hand reef break out front. It's very near Kuta ... by motorbike which is how most traveling surfers get about. By mountain bike I packed lunch and decided to make a day trip of it surfing early morning and late evening when conditions would be best.  So while all the other surfers left I hung out with the locals and ate my noodles. Tought a little english to the eager kids. And then started to seriously consider the locals offer to stay there for free and teach the kids english. That ... read more

We decided to do a combined blog for the whole of Bali as we didn't do much there and didn't take many pics (all of them are of Ubud!) as we wanted a nice place to relax for Christmas and New Year. Lovina We waited in Probolinggo for 2 hours before the air con tourist bus turned up to take us to Bali during this time Neil kept himself amused by teaching a 16 year old boy some funny and rude English phrases and slang. In response the boy wrote everything down very carefully in his little notebook and promised to practice! The bus was not a great one, again the air con stopped working and even though it was a full-size bus (as opposed to a mini bus) it was very cramped for us foreigners ... read more
