As we couldn't arrange to climb Gunung Merapi, Javas most active volcano, in central Java we headed east from Solo to The Bromo region or Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. It took us a whole day of travelling to reach the village of Cemoro Lawang, perched on the old crater edge. Basically, the arrangement here is that ancient volcanic activity from Gunung Tengger created a large crater of 10km diameter which now forms the main outer crater, of which the village of Cemoro Lawang is perched, with the Sea of Sand (volcanic sands and debris) at the bottom. Within the main crater rim and rising from the Sea of Sand, are the volcanoes of Bromo (active), Batok and Kursi. On the 5th we walked across the Sea of Sand and climbed up to Bromo, which was puffing out ... read more

Bali, a tropical island at the end of the Indonesian archipelago. Lots of Aussie tourists love to come here for a cheap holiday, not so much so these days since the Bali bombings a few years back. Schapelle Corby is their most famous resident at the moment because her boogie board could really get you boogying ;) Why have we never been here before? I guess it’s too close to home really…it’s in Australia’s backyard and there’s too many Aussies here. We like to go a little further out of the way - off the beaten tourist track. So why are we here? Our friend’s are hosting a set of 40th birthday party celebrations. Wayne (the best man at our wedding, and I was best man at his wedding) has his birthday on Dec 7th. Cathy, ... read more

Back in Bali, we spent the first few days in the obscenely touristy city of Kuta, soaking up the air conditioned shops and thrilled by the wide array of food options. Kuta is Bali's most popular tourist vacation, particularly as a surfing destination for Australians and Europeans looking for a beach vacation. The streets are packed with surf shops, trinket stands, bars, nightclubs, coffee shops and relatively expensive tourist restaurants. If there is any Indonesian authenticity remaining in Kuta, it is hiding far from the swarming city center. After a few days of gorging on the thrilling array of varied food options and pushing our way through hoardes of desperate street vendors, we grew tired of Kuta's hectic pace and rowdy nightlife. We checked out of our hotel and took a taxi back to Sanur, returning ... read more

Selamat siang from Bali! This blog is one of three we hope to publish regarding our travels in Bali. We are going to be in three different locations in Bali, each of which has a distinct flavor. Bali is only one of the 13,000 islands in Indonesia, which is part of the world’s largest archipelago. We’ve divided our time in Bali to three locations: Lovina Beach in the north, Ubud in the central and Kuta Beach in the south. We would have loved to go to the island of Lompok but we didn’t have enough time. Sounds funny coming from us, but trust us, the world is too big to see it all, and compromises must be made from time to time. We decided to start our time in Bali by heading north to the quiet ... read more

More mushrooms, more parties.... I have spent the last 4 days chilling on the beach nursing my hangovers. So much for coming to Gilly Trawangan for some R & R. Every night there is a party! I have met some great locals, Addy and Joe who are insererable, Lang who is as cool as..Ali, aka The Magicman - the funniest guy here, Elan - cute as!, Mona, Dan.... Ash turned up yesterday, I met him in Phi Phi at breakfast, we were both nursing hangovers...He had had a long journey from Java, hadn't slept for 48 hours. he reckoned he was going to bed....yeah whatever....I think he got to bed at 8 am this morning!! he was still sucking on mushroom shales at 6am! haha!! Today we flew into Java in Indonesia, following a good nights sleep we headed into the city to take a look at what it had to offer. Being the capital it was very well built with its high rises and western restaurants. One thing we couldn't understand is why absolutely everyone stared at us! Without fail people would lock onto us and not stop until we were out of sight, staring back would not deter them! Due to it being the weekend the city was busy with locals on weekends away. We headed out to Medan Merdeka Square in the centre of the city which is a 1km square patch of land, although most of the grass is pretty sun scorched it is a good place to get away form the traffic of the city. Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Amed November 30th 2007

On the 25th we traveled various back roads to Amed, on the N.E. coast of Bali. One town we drove through is famed for carved wood products and we laughed at a sign proudly declaring "Antiques made to order". Amed is an area described as "rustic Bali from 30 years ago" and we were really looking forward to snorkeling, as well as hiking in the foothills of Gunung Batur. On the way we visited Boseki - the Mother of all Temples, located on the upper slopes of the extinct volcano, Mt. Batur. After a long uphill hike, made all the longer by various touts attempting to sell us service or products to no avail, we reached the temple but a ceremony precluded our entering the main grounds. We are feeling "templed out" and find the temple ... read more

Yup. Bali. Beach haven. We are lucky with the weather and just got in ahead of a 10,000 delegate Globel Warming Conferance that starts on December 3rd. We will miss most of the security that will be in place, with such measures as barbed wire across the roads etc. We still feel safe because whenever our vehicle goes into a parking lot security men scan the underneath for bombs. Ya never know if you are next. lol First day on the the beach was R&R. Second day was an excursion to some shops and temples in the Eastern part of Bali. It seems they believe alot in Black magic and Voodoo. I had a talk with our guide who seems quite adament that his family is cursed and his sister has been suffering blindness because of ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta November 29th 2007

Oh what a change from the places we have been… Bali is pretty good. Not to say that China, Tibet, Nepal and India were bad at all (maybe India had some moments), but we feel like we are in our element now. On the first day we got here Dan and I immediately ran to the beach and jumped into the ocean after we found a place to stay. I think we both felt as if we had been baptized and had been cleansed of our strife (not sin) in India. We decided to stay in Kuta for the first few days to hang out, and get a feel for what we wanted to do while we were here in Bali. Kuta is the tourist capital of the island complete with 5-star hotels, more surf shops ... read more

I've made it to Kuta, Bali with my new 60 day visa. I try not to feel very frustrated about this visa hassle but I just have to say that it sucks! I have no shortage of time, I should be able to visit this country and go from place to place at my own pace, but here I am in Bali feeling rushed to get to Lombok and Sumbawa since I have to be out of the country again by the 25th of January. This might seem like a lot of time, but look at the map and remember that it took me 5 days to get from Singapore to Pulau Nias. I just need to get back in the water. It's nearly been two weeks since I was last surfing between the visa run ... read more
