Tourist Traps Today we did the tourist traps. After yesterday’s unsuccessful attempt at buying boardshorts, we started the walk down Legian Street again…but we got a headstart by jumping into a taxi and going a few kms first before walking. Initially we just planned to go to the WaterBom park but we spotted a slew of surf shops on the way down there so we got out a bit early. We wandered into RipCurl and at first, they weren’t sure if they had board shorts for girls! But then they understood what we wanted and we found a rack of suitable stuff for Loz. Loz was happy and a purchase was made. We wandered down the street a few more blocks looking and browsing - but it was really same-ol-same-old. We were still quite a way ... read more

Suckers! The day after Wayne’s 40th I was feeling decidedly seedy. A good sleep in, a hearty grease-laden breakfast of egg and bacon and taking it real quiet was in order. A couple of Panadol sealed the deal. Later on around 1pm, we decided that we’d try find Lauren a new set of board shorts and headed off up the road in search for a shop. We bumped into an equally seedy Wayne and Cathy headed back the other way - said some quick hellos and made some rudimentary plans for later, or maybe the next day. Near Legian Street, we were approached by a bloke with what looked like a fistful of cards trying to hand some to us. We didn’t see the harm in it and so Jane and I took one each. The ... read more

Leaving the Intercontinental was like having a warm safety blanked snatched away. It had felt so safe and protecting and familiar - yet plastic. I have been entertaining the idea that it’s about time to stop staying at 5-star resorts and start searching out unusual accommodation instead - places that haven’t yet succumbed to the tendrils of marketing agencies. We had such an experience back when Lauren was 4 years old. We’d stumbled upon a great deal to travel to Borneo and stay in a (yes…5 star) hotel for 8 days for a shade over $1,100 per person for *EVERYTHING*! When telling people where we were off to, they would say “Borneo? Where’s that?”. There was very little information about what we were headed into - those are the types of holiday I now long for. ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok December 7th 2007

I've changed the trip to a mountain biking/surfing trip. I'm in the capital of Lombok (Mataram pop. 130,000) the last "city" I'll come across so I'm taking advantage of it before I head further east...further back in time. Arriving in Lombok was already a change. Goats at the harbor. Horse drawn carriages on the road. Riding the bike from Kuta, Bali to Padangbai (harbor) took only 3 hours! It wasn't very pleasant, too many motorcycles and trucks. Once I got to Lombok the sounds of the many insects covered the little traffic noise! I'm really looking forward to getting on the more rural roads. As I approached the harbor on Bali I stopped by a temple (Hindu) when I heard the gamelan. I went down to the black sand beach to listen and watch the ... read more

So after a late arrival in Ubud last night, or should I say the early hours of this morning, we were woken to a delightful view of a jungle garden and a beautiful breakfast on the verander. We were really lucky to find this gem and so cheap too! Today we spent exploring the delights that Ubud had to offer. As it is the cultural centre of Bali there was a lot of art galleries and arty shops to visit, and coffee shops of course! Ubud has a really nice laid atmosphere going on and everyone is so friendly and helpful. We decided to hire a car for the next two days so we could see other parts of the island, using Ubud as a base, ideal as its in the centre of the island. This ... read more

Shopping Trip to Ubud All great journeys are paved with good intentions. US$40 to hire a driver for 8 hours includes car and petrol - cheap! The plan was to drive to Ubud and spend the day there shopping, checking out galleries, restaurants and maybe some cultural shows. Dancing First stop, major touristy Begong and Keris dance centre about 10km from our villa and about 20km short of Ubud. At first when the driver pulled over, there were lots of official looking people waving traffic to park on the wrong side of the road…what’s going on here? All the people are getting out of their cars/vans? Is this like a military checkpoint or something? I’m not carrying any ID with me - I read somewhere that you should carry your passports and visas with you, but ... read more

Ubud, Bali After 5 great days in Lovina Beach, we traveled a little over 2 hours to reach the town of Ubud. The drive takes 2 hours, but the actual distance is only about 40 or 50 km. The roads wind through the volcanic hills of Bali and through many villages along the way. Bali is a very green island thanks to the rich soil and abundance of precipitation. We are here during the rainy season, but it has been unusually dry according to the residents. The land still appears quite green and lush, despite the fact that the rains have not started yet. During our stay, we did witness the start of some prodigious rainstorms, which are about 6 weeks late. They usually happen in the afternoon. Ubud is the cultural center of Bali and ... read more

We arrived in West Sumatra late at night on December 4. A larger airport at Padang than expected but bit of a melee from the start and very hot and humid. The two men at Immigation took an inordinate amount of time reviewing passports and then stamped forms with vigour. After an hour we were waived through to collect our bags which I managed after only a short sharp tussle with shark-like wannabe baggage handlers. Customs officers smiling, but far too interested in the 4 arriving foreigners i(ncluding your fearless friends). Chatted with a friendly officer from Bukittinngi who expressed genuine pleasure that we were going hiking in the highlands the following week. For some reason I became separated from the missus and the Customs officer I was dealing with asked to go through the heavy ... read more

PATTIRO had a little farewell party for me. It was really lovely of them and I was really spoilt. Everyone gave little goodbye speeches to me. It was really funny and made me even more sad to be leaving after such a short time really. I feel like I was just starting to understand and speak more Bahasa Indonesian too.. Oh well I'll just have to come back to make use of it in the future!!! Now is also a bad time to be leaving as Pattiro have a big annual seminar on the 11th Dec, so will just missing seeing all the people from the Pattiro regions. Then also there's the UNFCCC in Bali from the 3rd Dec so I just miss that too. For the past few weeks there have been articles in the ... read more

Bali Belly Lauren and Jane have been have a slight taste of Bali Belly. Nothing too serious at this stage - not sure what could have caused it. My strategy of sticking to cooked-only food and heaps of alcohol seem to be paying dividends so far. 4WD Safari Waka Land Cruise safaris took us up into the hills today. It was our first real encounter with all the traffic conditions and types of people that Bali had to offer. We were picked up in a Land Rover fully kitted out for a serious expedition - there was no mistaking that our ride had arrived, that’s for sure. We met up with a British couple from a hotel in Nusa Dua. They were closer to the UN Conference action than we were - they said it was ... read more
