Bukit Lawang We caught a short flight from Jakarta to Medan, northern Sumatra, cutting out long overland journey that would be required, but we did as most people do in Medan and passed straight through. We caught a public bus to our next destination, Bukit Lawang and the journey happened exactly as the guide book explained it would, starting with a friendly local asking us about ourselves. From there it turns out he’s going to the same destination and just so happens to be a guide for the trek we plan to do in the national park. Thankfully there was no hard sell, and in the end he introduced us to another guide, Eru who would take us into the forest. Once we were settled into our accommodation in the village we signed up for ... read more

PS Day 62 - we crossed the equator in Sumatra between Pekanburu and Bukittinggi. We'd hoped for some sort of marker we could straddle for photos, but there were none. Apparently there are disputes about exactly where the equator lies. The hotel we stayed at in Bukittinggi was one of the worst we have had. The only communal area was a tiled lobby with plastic covered seating, liberally sprinkled with burnholes. Breakfast was served here - strong black tea accompanied by sandwiches of sweet bread sandwiches filled with neon green jam, squeezed from a tube round the edge of the bread, with a cross in the centre. The following day, there was a choice of red, orange and green - no difference in the taste - just the virrulent colour. The runaway in the basin in ... read more

Magnificent Manta!! The amazing day continued with 2 perfect out of this world dives! The first dive we went to The Coral Gardens....a long long stretch of reef full of the most colourful coral. Made diving in Thailand look drab! Saw some Reef Sharks, Turtles and dozens of fish! no octopus yet though! The second dive we went to a dive site called "The Airstrip". Its a long flat stretch of seabed about 9 metres down, and its frequented by Manta Ray. The area used to be home to around 300 Manta Ray but at last count there was just 25, they have been driven away by people chasing them, some people have even been known to throw themselves on them and ride them?!?!?!?! Both dive instructors were real nervous as we might not see any, ... read more

Penny Pinchers This is my third blog for today! A lot has happened I guess. So this evening I chilled out with my fellow dive buddies. The 2 American girls were telling us about their travels through Flores. There story was so different to mine, they apparently got ripped off everywhere they went?. I told them I thought this was strange as I hadn't found the Flores people to be dishonest, quite the opposite in fact, I kept getting free stuff?. At first I thought to myself that it was probably one of the girls sour faces and miserable attitude that got them ripped off left right and centre, but later on I found out what they considered being ripped off to be. For instance they would ask the price of the bus journey and everyones ... read more

Komodo Safari... Today has been the most amazing day of my travels in Indo so far! This morning on the way to the first dive site we stopped off at Rinca Island. This is one os the 3 islands in the National Park where you can find the Komodo Dragons! So on the way there Nero, one of the dive instructors briefs us about the dragons. He used to be a park ranger on Komodo Island. There are just 3000 of the dragons left on Earth, they can grow to 4 metres long and they eat anything! including people. A swiss guy apparently visited the island 30 years ago, he chartered a boat and went to see the dragons on his own. he was never seen again! All they found of him was his glasses and ... read more

A holiday from travelling in Paradise?... Initially I had planned to have a 12 day break in Bali, book into a nice resort with a pool etc and just relax from what I knew would be a gruelling schedule, recharge the batteries and read up on Australia, my next stop. Yeah I know tough life, who needs a holiday from travelling!! What I mean in reality is that I just decided to stay in one hotel or guest house for longer than 3 days without packing up all my belongings and plodding on to the next place. Bearing in mind Bali just isn't that big a place, where better to chill out, top up the tan and unwind a bit (At least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!) In Singapore I realised I was ... read more

Labaunbajo! Slept for 12 hours last night, felt great this morning! Turns out Labuanbajo is little more than a street. I thought it was going to be a lot bigger and more commercial considering it is one of the 2 gateways to The Komodo National Park - the only place on earth you can find the Komodo Dragons. Its nice that its stayed this way, not a Burger King or a Starbuks in sight. I'm off diving today, my first dive since I passed my PADI course in Thailand. I'm diving with Reefseekers, diving company owned by this Scottish guy called Ernest, who sounds just like Lilly Savage!. So I did 2 dives today, was amazing! The Komodo National Park is apparently the third best dive site in the world! There is a few of us ... read more

Hi family and friends afar, thanks for the replies to our last entry. It's really great to hear from you, and not just so we can gloat about not shovelling snow. Adventuring is great, but it does great a bit lonely at times. Kevan, this entry is especially for you, because I know you are planning a Bali trip. If that is still on, you would be hard pressed to find a lovlier place. Arriving at Alam Shanti, our first hotel, was absolutely magical. Hundreds of flickering torches and candles lead through a garden filled with statues of Hindu deities and lotus pools. Tuberose, frangipane, and incense perfumed the night, which was filled with the chirps of frogs and squeaks of geckos on their evening hunting. The hotel is on the outskirts of Ubud, very peaceful. ... read more

I don't think I've really mentioned traffic yet and I don't know I can have been in Jakarta this long and not. Traffic is probably the most talked about/moaned about problem in Jakarta. With the population of Greater Jakarta being at about 20 million most of whom commute in everyday that is a lot of people trying to get somewhere. Most people travel by motorcycle or car and The Jakarta Post, the main English speaking newspaper, predicted the other day by 2012 there'll be more cars than road. That's doesn't surprise me. I recently spent about 6 hours sat in traffic with Arie. We only spend about 1/2 hour at our destination which was within the city centre so not far and the whole trip took almost 7, ridiculous! I think for at least two hours ... read more

Labuanbajo... This morning I got on the bus to Labuanbajo, scheduled to last 10 hours! The bus wasn't too bad, of course the big fat policeman had to sit next to me. I was squashed between him and the window and he chain smoked the whole way. He and everyone else on the bus was really nice though. I got bought mango's, cigarettes, water...I guess I was a bit of a novelty, tourist on the local bus. I was the only person on the bus with a penknife though, imperative with only mango's to eat! Without my penknife in its pretty pink leather case the whole bus may have gone hungry. This bus journey seemed to last forever, everytime we got to the top of a mountain I would hope to see the sea but instead ... read more
