From about 2:30 to 4:30 pm on my brother's birthday, I hung around the pool reading my book and swimming. I then headed off to the beach to do some sunset surfing with the goal in mind of not spending a lot of money for a board. I succeeded on my third guy who was willing to charge me less than half of the other two's original prices. So I borrowed his rash guard (wet suit) and paddled out into the Balinese sunset on Kuta Beach. Totally worth it. I felt so at peace out on the waves. There were only a few people around me, none that much better than me, and all respectful of the place. I picked a good spot and rode some good sized waves. Probably none of the best waves I've ... read more

The next island on the Indonesian achipelago was the delightful Lombok. It was a five-hour ferry journey, and our ferry really should have been taken out of service in the 80's. It chugged along, spouting black smoke from it's chimney, and we were covered in flecks of black soot by the time we arrived. During the journey, the crew were casting fishing lines off the back as we sailed, to catch fish for sale in Lombok. On the way from the ferry, our driver stopped off at a bird-singing competition. There were about 100 people gathered around a central judging area. There was a row of bird cages, numbered 1 to 24, with all the birds merrily chirping and cheeping inside. In front of the cages were a row of judges, absorbed in concentration as they ... read more

The bus from Bajawa to Ruteng took over seven hours, and by the time we tumbled out of it in Ruteng we were tired and ready to eat something and go to bed. First, of course, we had to find a bed. We took moto taxis through town to our chosen hotel, and found it completely full. So we went to our second choice, and the owner informed us that he too was full, as was every single hotel in town. Apparently there was a local festival going on, and all the people from surrounding areas were in Ruteng to celebrate. The sun had set, and we were at least four hours from the next town with accommodation, and there was nowhere to sleep. The hotel owner looked at our dejected expressions, and mumbled something about ... read more

Bali. An island packed with temples, forests, lush rice terraces and beautiful beaches. A gorgeous place - provided you stay away from Kuta! It is the embodiment of everything I hate about mass-tourism. A tacky, commercialised holiday destination lacking any grace, style or charm. After visiting many places with rich culture and history, arriving in Kuta was like being hit around the head with baseball bat. But admittedly, Kuta does serve a purpose. If you are looking for a cheap holiday fix without any frills, just beaches, bars and cheap shopping, then this is the place. THINGS I HATE ABOUT KUTA 1. Shops selling stickers like "I dig fat chicks" and "up the bum, no babies". Who on earth is buying these? And where are they sticking them? (I know where I'd like to stick them) ... read more

The bus from Ende to Bajawa was the same jam-packed insanity as always, although we did manage to get seats inside this time. It took six hours of bouncing and jostling and blaring music and screeching breaks and puking passengers and clucking chickens in the bus aisles pecking at our feet and other people's babies sleeping on our shoulders and and suffocating clouds of clove cigarette smoke filling the bus to reach Bajawa, but we finally did, in the late afternoon of October 25th. We checked into Edelweis Hotel, which, despite its name, was run by a group of ever-changing Indonesian teenagers, a nice older man and a cranky old woman. Our room was particularly nice: clean, tiled, attached bathroom and a porch. There were signs advertising internet inside our hotel, but when we asked one ... read more

After waiting on the side of the road in Moni for about an hour, a rattling minibus finally came lurching up the hill past us. We flagged it down and glanced inside, finding it even more packed full than the bus we'd taken to Moni. We could wait another couple hours for another bus, and hope it would have more space, or we could ride on top of this one. We climbed on top, settling ourselves and our bags into the luggage rack next to the guy in charge of luggage, who had himself squished into a crevice between bags, his hat pulled over his face to block the sun. As the bus pulled away Jeff and I loaded up on sunscreen, then settled back for the ride. Although undoubtedly not as safe as being inside, ... read more

For the last 9 days we've been relaxing and having fun in Kuta on Bali, before we are constantly on the move in Australia. Its quite a touristy place, but we've really enjoyed it, as it has a really nice vibrancy about it. There are also plenty of things to do here, lots of bars and clubs and loads of nice places to get some good western food, which has been a nice change from the normal Indonesian choice of fried rice, fried rice, or... fried rice. What's also made a difference is being with a really cool group of people; Mark, Johan, Rinaldo and Rowena, who we travelled from Mt Bromo with. Its been great all chilling on the beach together in the day and then having dinner together at night, we also got them ... read more

There were two more sights I wanted to see in Java, but their remoteness made independent travel a pain in the butt: Mount Bromo and the Ijen Plateau. I had heard about a three-day excursion which also included onward travel to Bali. A gentleman I met gave me a leaflet, and promised me a hefty 30% discount if I booked through his office. I arrived at the office, and the guy behind the desk denied all knowledge of a discount. "Who said this?" he demanded. I didn't know the other guys name, but I remembered he was cross-eyed, and so I described him. "No-one like that works here I'm afraid. You'll have to pay full-price". Just then, my cross-eyed guy came into the office! I greeted him with a handshake and said "I came. 30% discount, ... read more

We took a small plane from Bali to Ende, a city in the center of Flores island. The views of the Indonesian archipelago from the air were stunning: impossibly blue water, countless tiny lush green islands rimmed with perfect white sand. We were the only foreigners on the flight, a fact that would set the tone for the rest of our time in Flores. We chose Flores as a destination mainly because of Keli Mutu, a famous volcano with three crater lakes of different colors, and because it was well off the usual tourist track. This latter reason was confirmed as we descended, landing on a tiny runway with goats grazing beside it. At least fifty people were gathered along the runway to watch the landing, waving excitedly as the plane pulled to a stop. We ... read more
