I completely missed out the flight to Jakarta, which was a bit of a non event....but the arrival into indonesia was one that could have been smoother! On arrival to indonesia they give you a 30 day visa....and like the rest of asia want to see proof of onward travel (ie a plane ticket). We hadnt shown anyone any proof of onward travel in any other country.......but we showed our ticket to a moody official...leaving bali on the 16th of november from bali. The guy was seriously annoyed and said 'this is very bad', and kept shaking his head, as this is longer than 30 days. We told him of our intent to change the ticket to an earlier date so that we dont overstay our really warm welcome, but he said no.....this is not good. ... read more

It took 12 hours to get to Mount Bromo from Yogyakarta. It was a long ride, with 2 long stops due to multiple flat tires...but we are pretty much immune to being annoyed by all of that stuff anymore. Delays just don't bother us one bit, we know we will get there...eventually. We were just happy that we didn't have to do the same, return trip, back to Yogyakarta the next day like all the other tourists in the van. Phew. The sceanary was great at times but for the most part the journey was spent driving in and out of the never ending urban sprawl that is Java. Mount Bromo is one of Javas biggest tourist attractions, truly one of the worlds most magnificent volcanic landscapes. And to see this landscape in all its glory ... read more

The full story of our week in bali.... After arriving at midnight we picked up our bags and met our guide (James) out the front of the airport. He took us to our hotel where we checked in. By this point we had been awake for about 34+ hours, so, you would of thought we were ready to hit the sack. Nah! got a beer out the fridge and headed to the lobby and toasted the start of our travels. Sunday Awoke at 11am after a well needed sleep, too late for breakfast so we hit the pool for some sunbathing... yeah! Pool isn't heated at all, but after laying in 34 degrees for an hour its very welcoming. Monday Pretty much the same, dinner in the pool side bar with a bottle of red vino ... read more

Ok so we have been a little lazy....probably been about 3 motnhs since i last uploaded a blog..but that is because this is a travel blog...and the last 3 months we were not travelling..we were working very hard. Right, i'm gonna keep this short and sweet for 2 reasons; firstly, i just found out we have lost some entries due to server failure and secondly if i write to much now you will not buy my book in years to come where i plan to make my fortune... As most of you know we have been on koh tao...where my heart still is...we (Rich, Lisa and I) are now all qualified divemasters(DM). The course itself was really enjoyable (definately recommend the rescue diver to anyone) and we were so pleased we did it with Easy Divers. ... read more

Bali is an anomaly in the entire Southeast Asian region, let alone just Indonesia, by being a society in which Hinduism is the dominant religion. Hinduism came to Bali more than 2,000 years ago and has developed in an independent fashion ever since, assimilating aspects of Buddhism, animism, and ancestor worship. One of the interesting aspects of Balinese Hinduism (according to Wikipedia) is that it emphasises the propitiation of umpteen local spirits via aesthetically pleasing rituals - this is perhaps why the island has over 11,000 temples and pretty much every day there is a festival at one or more of them. Balinese culture, like many cultures throughout the world, has been informed and shaped by religion. And Balinese culture is perhaps best represented by Ubud (I read that Javanese culture is best represented by Yogyakarta, ... read more

Next morning we drove to the port of Padang Bai to catch the ferry to Lombok. In the itinerary it said this took 4-7 hours. 4-7 hours? Thats quite broad! In the end it took about 6 but was a good chance to meet some locals, as I got introduced to some Indonesian music on a boys MP3 player (his favourite Western music was Westlife and Britney worryingly!) whilst I introduced him to the Kaiser Chiefs! But totally the most bizarre thing about the trip was the extremely loud house music they played on arrival into Lembar port. Bearing in mind that Lombok is predominantly Muslim and more quite a bit more conservative than Bali, no one really seemed bothered or surprised by it, as Crazy Frog dance remix blared out. Bizarre! We drove to Kuta, ... read more

Hey All Have finally arrived in Sydney and have a pc that really has broadband, not just pretending, like the one at the hotel in Bali. And what can I say about Bali, it was awesome. Hotel, weather (30 all week), room, facilities, service, food, even the gym, was fantastic. We had a really chilled week in Bali, the main aim being to get over the jetlag before arriving in Sydney (and maybe get a bit of a tan (or sunburn in Laz's case!!)) We ventured out mid week in Bali, for a bit of fun and a bit of culture. 1st, white water rafting down the Ayung River. The water level was fairly low but there were a few rapids in places and our tour certainly knew how to hit them. We were sharing the ... read more

As the temperature gets chillier in many Northern Hemisphere countries, tropical destinations such as Bali seem all the more attractive. With their bona fide friendly nature and ingenious for hospitality, the Balinese make the island an even more popular destination to beachcombers in search of sun, sand and surf. Bali also has a variety of beach options to suit every kind of traveler. There are the popular surf spots of Kuta and Legian, the luxurious and private shores of Nusa Dua, the chic and romantic Seminyak beach and the beautifully serene locale of Sanur. With its clean break waves and lengthy golden shore, Kuta has been a favourite among surfers since the 1970s. These days, the area is something of a tourist Mecca, offering a prime nightlife and entertainment scene in addition to its vast array ... read more

So, after enduring a 3 hour delay and another terrifying earthquake at the Padang Airport, we were saying goodbye to Sumatra and on our way to Java. Finally, after almost 4 months in Indonesia, we were going to see the heart of this wild country. We had just touched down in Jakarta about 2 months ago but never left the vicinity of the airport as we had a flight to Singapore the following day. We arrived, this time, in the evening, hopped in a taxi and were driven through the wide and busy streets to the main backpacker center; Jalan Jaksa. First we found a hotel, a DECENT hotel (one that wasn't visibly crawling with cockroaches or trannies), had some dinner and then fell right asleep. The next day we decided to wander about, catch a ... read more

Pattiro has quite a few local offices where they administor the projects from and so I am spending the next few weeks visiting some of them. I have spent the last week in Limbangan, this is a village in a member of Pattiro staff, Widi, lives. The village is farily high up in the foothills of Mt Ungaran. It is surrounded by lots of forests and there are two particular sections that are government owned but are being used by locals more and more for farming. The government don't really have the time or inclanation to bother about these forests so local farmers and encroaching on them and cutting down trees, hunting etc. Widi wants to try and make the village and forest a conservation area and ensure that it is protected. We had lots of ... read more
