This is the first blog in a LONG time and my excuse is... err... I been busy. I got you all hooked and then took away the drug and for this i apologise. But im leaving tommorow and thought I would right my wrongs and do a whistle stop tour of the second half of my trip. Im now writing from Bangkok but wishing I was still in Indonesia. In Indonesia I had 60 days, just over 200 hours on boats and buses, saw 8 Komodo dragons, 3 albinos, 1 buffalo sacrifice, 5 scuba dives and 3 midgets. While I came to Indonesia because of its beautiful nature, its the people who make it awesome. I will definitely have to return to explore the HUGE parts I missed, and you should too. After finishing the blog ... read more

In the more remote places of Indonesia, there are no hotels so you have to rely on getting an invite to stay with someone. I usually would turn up somewhere, wander around, swim, talk to people about what what life is like here and answer questions about my life. Its just luck if you bump into someone nice or interesting. There are no "attractions" and the goal is just to try to get into the swing of life. But after Lembata I headed to Flores and the difference was depressingly obvious. People in the touristed parts of Flores are completely different. The attitude to tourists in parts of Flores is basically that we are just walking wallets. Every hotel and bus in Flores except one hotel tried to rip me off. Luckily I'm stubborn enough to ... read more

Getting to Mount Bromo promised to be a gruelling day's travel whichever way we did it so we opted for the least-hassle option, namely a minibus that would take us door to door. With all seats occupied, it was an uncomfortable 12 hour journey, with the aircon malfunctioning (and melting my chocolate supplies) and little in the way of interesting scenery. Progress was slow, courtesy of most roads only being 1 lane in each direction and the idea of town bypasses apparently not having caught on. Despite having been assured that the minibus would go straight to Mount Bromo with no stops or changes, we stopped at Probolinggo so that some of the other passengers could sort out their accommodation and then had to change to another minibus to get to Cemoro Lawang, the village nearest ... read more

Lake Toba...How we DO love Lake Toba. Its been 5 days sice we've arrived and we are damn happy to be here. The goin' is SLOW, the food is DELISH, the air is COOL and the accommodation is CLEAN. Life is sweet in Toba. We don't really want to leave on Sunday like we've decided to do. But if we want to see other things in Sumatra and then Java, unfortunately we must move on. Though we could do as Martin and Sara, a Swiss couple we met here, and just decide to give up all of our plans and donate our time and money to stay here and help the locals rebuild their hotels and tourist attractions so that the tourists would actually return to visit one fine day. Or do as Johnny from Berlin ... read more

hello my lovely dedicated readers (aka mum and dad). hope you are all well and enjoying the sun i am sure is shining oh so brightly at home. i am currently in wales, and the sun does not seem so intent on shining here. it's odd sort of weather really - it has not yet rained, yet the sky is stuck in an endless sulk, content to remain grey and cloudy in a sure-fire attempt to suck the soul out of anyone not totally accustomed to shitty weather. haha. nah, it's not that bad, i'm getting used to it really. but last night joe and tom (some friends i met when they were backpacking around australia) decided to have a party in the backyard, which was about 2 degrees. i have to give them credit, british ... read more

This might be quite dull so I apolgise if you're not interested and feel free to skim read... PATTIRO is the NGO that I'm working for. It stands for Centre for Regional Studies and Information in Indonesian. www.pattiro.org. It has been running for about 8 years and has 11 regional offices throughout Indonesia. The main focus is to promote and create good governance and develop public participation. It does this through improving the capacity of local community organisations, other NGOs and governement agencies to be actively involved in the policy-making process. So makes sure they have training on how to analyse public budgets to ensure that money is spent according to local needs, particluary basic rights such as education and health. At check-in for our flight to Jakarta I was informed that my rucksack was now at 17kg, up 7kg from when I left London in January and the result of accumulating journals, CD backups of photos, half the works of Jared Diamond, etc. Some pruning will be needed soon, as well as another parcel to be sent home. Air Asia broke with tradition by landing us in Indonesia's capital in time for our onward connection. Indonesian airlines, of which there are about 50, don't have a great reputation for safety, to the point that the EU had recently banned them from European airspace (not that any of the carriers concerned actually flew to Europe, but it was the thought that counted). However with land-based journey times long, and airfares tantalisingly cheap, we threw in our lot ... read more
