Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta October 22nd 2007

With only 2 weeks left of travelling....we decided to head back down to south Bali and start accumulating some new clothes and stuff for our move to Oz. We headed down to Sanur, after a recommendation from people we met in the Gili islands, and ended up in this weird homestay lodge. Instead of the usual room and bathroom, we had a room and open air bathroom/kitchen..........which was kinda cool as we could abuse the local supermarket and have a more normal life for a while. Sanur as a place was a bit of a non event........full of tourists and swanky hotels so we left after just 3 days to sample the delights of Kuta once again. We arrived back at the cheap hotel we’d been staying in before (8 quid for a decent room, pool, ... read more

My next stop was one of Java's largest cities, Yogyakarta. On the way, I noticed that many buses and trucks had names written across their windscreens in giant adhesive letters. Apparently it is fashionable in Java to name your vehicle for all to see! Most were in Indonesian, so I had no idea what they meant. But I spotted a few in English which made me chuckle, such as a bus called "The Winner", and a truck called "Catwoman". Who on earth would name their ten-ton truck catwoman? I arrived at Yogyakarta at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. I settled into a cheap but friendly hotel and set out in search of a tour for the next day. I wanted to climb Mount Merapi, Indonesia's most active volcano. I found a tour leaving that NIGHT, and ... read more

18-21 Oct 2007What can I say? It is Bali... the world famous Bali and I was very lucky to have a full expense paid trip and stayed in a small luxury resort - SPA VILLAGE RESORT TEMBOK BALI.The scenaries were heaven. The services were first class. The staff is extremely friendly. The downsides are the foods need some improvisation and the journey from airport to the resort is too far and very exhausting. The 80 min massages feels like 20 min only, way too nice.... read more

Hi, From the 5th Oct to the 22nd the office has been closed here because of Lebaran, a holiday to celebrate Idul Fitri, the end of Ramadhan and the fasting month. Most muslims go back to their families for these two weeks, normally in the villages and celebrate by having big parties and eating lots!! So this was an ideal time for me to have a nice little holiday to visit Bali. Bali is the quite unlike the rest of Indonesia culture wise as the majority religion is Hindu. There are many temples everywhere you go in Bali and many are big tourist attractions as well as places of worship. Most people also have shrines in their homes where they offer food stuffs and light insence sticks at many times during the day. Bali is really ... read more

We flew from Singapore to Denpasar airport in Bali on October 16th. We learned from another passenger on the flight that nearly all hotels in Bali were booked due to the Muslim holiday Hari Raya, since many Indonesians were spending their holiday in Bali. Our usual method of taking a taxi to a hotel-filled area and wandering until we found one might not work this time, it seemed. After getting our luggage we began visiting tourist counters at the airport, a practice we generally avoid. One after another had nothing available except for posh $60 plus hotel rooms. We finally found a hotel with two $25 rooms still available, in the seaside city of Sanur. We snatched up one of the rooms, and recruited another hotel-less couple to take the other. The four of crowded into ... read more

Hello everyone! Hope you are all keeping well!? You are? Great, then I'll carry on. We flew from Phuket down to Kuala Lumpur as we were pushed for time to get through to Singapore for our flight down to Bali. The first sight we visited was the Petronas Towers which truly are spectacular, the journey up to the visitor's "Sky Bridge" afforded some magnificent views of the city and was free so we couldn't really grumble! We spent the rest of the day wondering around the city and chanced upon a large group of Macaques that call central Kuala Lumpur home as well as a Monitor Lizard that was well in excess of a metre-you just don't get those kind of things in Devon! The city was a nice place to spend a day and a ... read more

Hi, Sorry I haven't updated this for a while. I've spent a few weeks visiting some of Pattiro's offices in Central Java and so had not much internet access and then have just had a nice little holiday in bali for two weeks too!! After spending a very lovely week with Widi and his family in Limbangan I went to Solo (a city within Surakarta). Solo is def not quite as pretty as Limbangan, but a quite nice city. I stayed there with someone from Pattiro, Latri, in her boarding house. We went to the traditional market near her home to buy breakfast every morning (Nasi Liwet (rice with some kind of coconut, egg +other random things sauce)) and she took me to some nice local places to eat in the evening too. The food was ... read more

We got a taxi from Ubud to Toya Bunkah with our sole intention to climb a volcano. As we drove downwards the views were spectacular. The guest house where we were staying was situated on the lake overlooking the volcano. There were a number of different treks you could do some starting at 3am and getting back at 10am. Being the hardcore trekkers that we are we opted for the 3 hour trek (the easy trek) which meant we didn't have to get up until 4:20am, what a lie in! There was one major problem with this place which we quickly realised.... the flies....they were everywhere. Due to this we decided that after we had climbed the volcano no matter how tired we were, we were going to leave. After having a fly infested lunch and ... read more

After Lake Toba we caught a crammed bus back up to Medan, then flew to Jakarta. As soon as we landed in Jakarta we decided not to stay long. It's another busy, noisey sprawl so after squeezing in a few hours sleep we booked a minivan to take us to Yogyakarta further south. We were told by the agent that we wold have a lovely spacious, air con minivan, which we did, but we were also told that the trip would only take 9 hours, which it didn't - more like 20! At this time of year the muslim community celebrate the end of their fasting season (Hari Raya) and everyone goes home to be with friends and family so all the main roads were heaving with traffic! It didn't help that we had a blown ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Pangandaran October 18th 2007

At the unsavoury hour of 6am, I boarded a minibus to the coastal town of Pangandaran (try saying that after a few beers). On the way I observed the Indonesian technique of overtaking. First, you pull out and start pipping your horn whilst going for the overtake. Even if a car is coming the other way, or you are approaching a corner, you still make the attempt. Because if it becomes apparent that you are not going to make it, there are two options 1. Step hard on the brakes and fall back into place, and attempt the overtake again later 2. Continue, despite the fact that a car is going to hit you head on. Option 2 is a popular one, and might seem suicidal, but Indonesian Overtaking Techniques account for this. The pipping of ... read more
