It was quite strange to arrive back in a part of the world where as a white person you can't walk the street without some kind of hassle, mainly it's been massage, manicures, hair braiding (although the quickest way to stop that was to get my hair braided),and various items of clothing. The area of Kuta is over run by scooters, and on a number of occasions, they have come far too close for comfort, weve both vowed that if someone on a scooter hits us we'll damage them more than they do us! Despite the fact that we're dodging them and clearly hating them, every 20 metres we're being offered the chance to hire one! So, what have we actually done in the two weeks that we've been here? This was always planned to be ... read more

My next stop was Indonesia, a country constantly ravaged by natural disasters; Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, typhoons and tsunamis. Having experienced an earthquake first-hand in Peru last August, I was keen to avoid nature's other bad boys. As it turned out, it was only volcanic eruptions that I had to deal with, but that's a story for a later blog entry. I landed in Jakarta and went through the usual baggage collection chore. Bag after bag went past, but my rucksack (in glorious and unmissable purple) was nowhere to be seen. The baggage started to thin out, and then a sign was placed on the carousel saying "Last Bag", to indicate no more were coming out. NOOO!!! My worst nightmare realised. This happened to me in Guatemala ten years ago, when bloody United Airlines decided to ... read more

We caught a taxi to Ubud after a fast boat ride from the Gili's. It seemed like a quaint little place with lots of art and craft shops. As it was a public holiday we were a bit worried that we wouldn't be able to find somewhere to stay however spent the night in the biggest room ever! It was very basic though and we moved the next day to a lovely little place where we had a four poster bed and they bought you breakfast every morning on the balcony! We both loved Ubud for one main reason, the food! Both of us haven't been very impressed with the Indonesian food compared to the Thai and Malaysian cuisine so we definitely appreciated it here. The second day in Ubud we went to the monkey sanctuary ... read more

Mount Bromo (Gunung Bromo, 2,392m) is an active volcano in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park of East Java, Indonesia Bromo isn't the highest mountain in Java — that honor goes to nearby Mount Semeru at 3,676m — but it's probably the most famous one. Bromo is in fact only one of many peaks inside the massive Tengger Caldera, but it's easily recognized as the entire top has been blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white sulphurous smoke. The inside of the caldera, aptly dubbed the Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) is coated with fine volcanic sand and the overall effect is unsettlingly unearthly, especially when compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera. Mt. Semeru is a stratovolcano in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, in the province of East Java. Semeru is one of ... read more

We got up early to catch our taxi which we had arranged a few days ago to take us to the port in Padangbai. We had managed to get a cheap price for the journey as we were initially going to get the bus and the taxi driver gave us a good deal. As the taxi was about 10 minutes late, Mark went for a wonder and later signaled me that he had found our taxi driver. After having a nice chat with the taxi driver and being well into our journey we realised that it was not our taxi driver and that the one we had had told a little fib and the metre was running! We made it to the port where we were intercepted by an agency and were completely ripped off for ... read more

After another night in Medan after Bukit Lawang, we we're up early to take the bus to Berastagi in the Karo Highlands. We arrived at midday, glad to be in the cooler highlands after the jungle heat and Medan madness. That afternoon we attempted to make our way to the traditional Karo Batak (The Batak people are the original tribes people of Sumatra) village of Lingga. After initially finding it impossible to ascertain which bemo went to the village, we met two nice Indonesian lads, Jan and Fernando, who are learning to become Christian pastors. Jan spoke excellent english and they helped us find the right bemo and then decided to accompany us to the village. This turned out to be a great stroke of luck, as when we arrived Jan acted as interpreter for us ... read more

After our last national golden week experience, we decided to skip out on China travel and go somewhere exotic. We tossed around the idea of India, Laos, and the Philippines, but ultimately decided on Bali, Indonesia. Just typing the words is difficult for me. I didn’t really want to leave. Typing this summary means the vacation is finished and we are back in the China grind. We talked to our good friends Ricky and Mickey, and they decided to come along too. Rick found a complete 5 day travel package (for 2 people) for about the same price that we could find a plane ticket (for 1). So, we opted for the tour. We aren’t normally the tour going type, but for the right price we will do just about anything (related to travel, that is). ... read more

We caught a plane to Bali (we were both very relieved to be leaving Jakarta) and wanted some time to relax before heading to Sydney to work. Due to the plane crash in Thailand about a month before we decided that we wouldn't chance it by using the cheap budget airlines (and also there is no alcohol served on these flights to calm the nerves) so we flew Air Asia which only had a late night flight. We got to Bali late that night and got a taxi to our hotel down the narrow winding roads to Kuta. We had booked to stay in a hotel as we knew we were arriving late and managed to fall into bed and sleep. Kuta is the very touristy bit of Bali as it is near the airport, it ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Bukit Lawang October 3rd 2007

So... we arrived safely in the city of Medan on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, via our Air Asia flight from KL. Indonesia has immediately struck us as being very different from the other Asian countries we've been to. For instance, although all the people of the various countries we have been to are very friendly, Indonesians are arguably even more friendly than the rest! They don't hesitate in the slightest to come up and chat to you, or even just shout "Hello Mister!" at you in the street. We checked into our hotel and discovered that there are no showers just mandi (a brick basin full of water, with a plastic saucepan thing to pour it over you, back to basics!), we were informed in a friendly manner by the manager that this is ... read more
