Today was our first day in Jaisalmer, a desert city in the northwest of India close to the Pakistani border. Its a city where everything is made of sandstone, basically because everything around it is sand. Our main reason for visiting Jaisalmer was to wander the desert on a camel and then spend a night sleeping under the desert sky. The first task for the day was to find a travel agent to book a desert tour with. The first guy we talked to seemed really dodgy so we told him that we'd think about it and come back in an hour if we were interested. However, we managed to find a more trustworthy guy and so booked with him. This caused some problems later in the day unfortunately (see below). We then wandered through the ... read more

Free day in Pushkar Holy City. Be good now! Wander here. Shop there. I basically spent the day in Pushkar with Robyn. We did a tiny bit of shopping and we tried to go see the Brahma temple but there was a bit of a disturbing incident that gave us a sour taste in our mouths. Here's the short story of what happened. Robyn and I take off our shoes like you're supposed to and put them in a cubby hole for safe keeping. Then there are flower vendors that say "free flowers" as offerings. We say "no thanks." Basically it is like the flower in the lake scam. Then this guy is yelling at us that we should take the flowers out of respect. Hey buddy, what's with the elevated voice? It took me a ... read more

We were going roughly the same way as our Swiss friends Cynthia and Laurent, so we decided to take the same bus. It was empty for Indian standards and we had a nice time passing through several cities full of painted havelis. We were doing sightseeing from the bus, by sitting higher we had the chance to see the incredible paintings almost at eye level, and furthermore the bus was moving very slowly through the crowded streets. A high percentage of the havelis these days are occupied by different people than the ones who had them built and they do not really care about their lodgings’ value. For this reason, the lowest part of the painted wall is faded or plastered with posters, and from the bus we saw the better conserved parts. There is always ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur April 8th 2005

We spent the first half of today wandering around Udaipur and looking at a few palaces. The first one we looked at had a crystal gallery where everything was made of crystal, including massive dining tables and lounge sets. Although they were very beautiful, we got a bit bored after the first three. Also had a look at apparently one of the better attractions in Udaipur - the Durbar hall. Sadly it was just a big dusty hall with lots of pictures and old furniture. Looked very British. Next was a tour of the City Palace. This allowed us to wander around the main palace that the King of Udaipur used to live in. Unfortunately a lot of it was in disrepair or rather just very old and gross looking. The architecture was very interesting, and ... read more

Long, hot, sweaty bus With criminals and shackles Packed in like sardines. Basically a big transportation day to get to Pushkar. A jeep ride and then a six hour bus ride in hot, sweaty, cramped quarters. You really get to know your neighbours quickly! It actually wasn't too bad since I was plugged into my tunes and we did get a few breaks to stretch our legs and get snacks. One unforgettable moment was when a bunch of criminals in shackles came on the bus...with the authorities of course! Guess the bus is cheaper than a taxi?? Sort of reminded me when I was on the Greyhound bus from Appleton to Chicago! After settling into our accommodations, Nitin took the group out on an orientation tour of Pushkar where we had a small preview of what ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur April 7th 2005

Today was to be a day of luxury. We were off to Udaipur, a city in Rajasthan reknowned for its beautiful and huge palaces. In particular, the lake palace is the most famous of the lot, being situated in the middle of a picturesque lake and in fact having starred in the James Bond movie Ocotpussy. The day started off with an early morning 6:50am flight to Udaipur. However, thanks to Indian Airlines efficiency, we discovered upon arriving at the airport that the flight had been delayed until 12:30. After yelling at numerous staff (I was a bit cranky since I had to get up at 4:30am) we decided to go into Mumbai to see Chowpatty Beach - one of the nicer places in Mumbai. However, the dumb taxi driver took us to some dodgy Chowpatty ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bikaner April 6th 2005

Although Bikaner is well off the tourist route, for us it was perfectly situated because we were on our way to Jaipur and it was right in the middle. We arrived there quite late, around 8:30 p.m. after a very long bus ride through the desert. We had wanted to leave Jaisalmer in the morning but although there is regular bus service, the earlier buses are not allowed for tourists because their route runs too close to the Pakistan border. As we wanted to take a private bus this time because they have more comfortable seats, we had to accept that they only sold us tickets for the 2 p.m. bus. Interestingly this trip was less tedious than the one to Jaisalmer, because we saw a lot of animals, many groups of antelopes, some eagles and ... read more

I'm all by myself Castle stay in my own room Great chill out spaces. We had an early morning start where we had to catch a train. We made it to the station with plenty of time to spare. Nothing too exciting other than some stray dogs that were getting frisky. At one point Mel, Shauna, Brian and I were playing Eye Spy to pass the time! Then I don't know how the conversation started but Brian stated talking to this Indian guy and his daughter. Then at one point the Indian guy points to Brian and then to me..."is that your daughter?" LOL So of course it became a running joke that Brian is my dad and Shauna my mum. Amazing since I'm almost two years older than the two of them! LOL We didn't ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bundi April 5th 2005

Walking in Bundi A town that time has forgot Really dry and hot. Our tour guide BJ (nickname something like Bubba?) took us on a walking tour of the new and old parts of Bundi including the Palace and some impressive step wells. Along the way we passed by some market stalls...not just your regular fruit, veggies and clothes. More like the dentist (scary and painful tooth extractions for real cheap), locks of all shapes and sizes, sugar cane juice (freshly squeezed), bangles, nail painting etc. Bundi is known as the City of Wells. I can't remember how many there are around the city but we saw two of them. One of them was 46 metres deep and is now protected. Not only by a fence but by pigeons and bats too! As I mentioned, we ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranthambhore National Park April 4th 2005

6AM Wake up Early morning safari No tiger sightings Woke up early this morning to partake in a safari through Ranthambhore National Park in hopes of spotting a tiger. But upon seeing our mode of transportation I was very doubtful we'd be seeing anything...a hugeass open top bus that I'm guessing accommodates about 20+ people. We did however see lots of black faced monkeys and deer! There was one other jeep that was out at the same time we were out there that was lucky to have the chance to spot the tiger. Hmm, either there is a real tiger out there or they paid these three off. Haha Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be for me to see a tiger in India. We had a late check out at noon so basically ... read more
