Well I survived, although at some points (noon to be precise) I wasn't sure if I would! I just got back from a Camel Trek in the deserts of Jaisamler. It was only a 2 day trek but that was enough for me considering the heat and the fact that camels are pretty damn uncomfortable to ride! Jaisamler is a nice little city with another fort towering over it (similar to the pictures from the last blog). Most tourists/travelers come here for the camel treks (but most come when it is not as hot as it is now). But being that it is summer there where very few other tourists here, which in some ways was nice, the hotels where cheaper and the shopping was too (at least I think it was - I got suckered ... read more

Where to start? We're the local entertainment in our dorm/compound. We did laundry outside yesterday and today. Always get big crowds with that as we put on as little clothing as possible and get ourselves completely soaked while the women squat in their full saris and don't seem to get a drop on them. We wash them outside in the main tiled courtyard on the ground under the water spouts. The women watched, laughed, and finally one woman came up and took our laundry away (the stuff we'd already cleaned and were getting ready to rinse) and washed them for us - again - showing us the right way, beating it on the ground. One woman asked us with hand motions and broken english why we didn't use a washing machine. We just shrugged and went ... read more

In Amritsar. Didn't sleep much last night, took off at 6:00am to get to the train station this morning. Long ass ride with screaming children. Agriculture. Rice. Fruit trees. Jilns for bricks. Corn. Strange haystacks. But we finally arrived. The only non-indian tourists we could see, accosted by drivers. Eventually made it to the info center - notsohelpful. Aot an autorickshaw to the Temple. Found the info center. Again, notsomuch very helpful. Went to go find lodging. Are staying in the free open beds at the Temple. Ate lunch at the langar with free dal and bread. We're such a rare sight - reminds me of China. Walking around inside the Temple boys come up and shake our hands and ask to have pictures taken with us. Old women smile and want photos taken with us, ... read more

Hey everyone. I have been moving around quite a bit and have started to fall behind on my blogs. Over the past week I have been in the city of Jaipur, Pushkar, and Jodhpur (and am actually in Jaisalmer right now). The problems with my tooth got really bad in Jaipur, and I ended up going to another dentist. This time I was told that an old root canal that I had was infected and that I'd have to get another root canal, but the problem was that the infection was pretty bad (my face was all swollen) and that I wasn't reacting to the antibiotics the other dentist had given me. He said that if the new antibiotics that he was prescribing didn't work then he'd have to go in a manually remove the puss ... read more

India was at the top of my list of where I wanted to travel outside of Japan. So...I finally made it. Myself and 6 friends took on a small part of India (Rajasthan) for about 2 weeks in March. India is huge....2 weeks doesn't even come close to the amount of time you'd need to spend there to see and experience it all. We arrived in Delhi around 3am and headed out early the next day to start the journey. We decided to hire our own personal van and driver because it saved time and money in the long run. The downside to this was that these companies have "friends" all over the touristy cities. That means that they always want to take you to certain restuarants, hotels, or shops where they will get commission. Our ... read more

...Expecting marbled Island palaces floating like mirages on placid blue waters. We arrived in the yellow cool of morning after an 18hr trip up from Mumbai to Udaipur, the city of Lakes, to find the mirrored oasis of Lake Pichola was no more. The lovelorn palaces sat stranded in a barren dusty wasteland thirsting for the return of the tranquil neutralising waters that are the very essence of Udaipurs majesty. The ambience of desire was palpable - as though every building, mountain, man and beast longed for the return of the cities lifeblood with such intensity; suspending the city in state of glorious melancholic yearning. Udaipur is a victim of its own beauty. Local mismanagement and the undoubted and the ever increasing popularity of Udaipur has put such a strain on its most valuable commodity - ... read more

mbaade's visa update: Called the embassy. They say they never received any money. The mailroom had none, so they returned my paperwork. I, of course, know this cannot be true because I put the money order in the envelope myself and I watched the postal employee seal it. So whatever, Indian embassy not helpful. Went to the post office to see if they could tell me whether or not the money order had been cashed so I could see if for some reason it really did not arrive or if it was stolen. But I have to put in a request to see, it costs 3 bucks, and it takes a week. Buddy, I'm leaving in a week! But whatever, put in the request. If it was not cashed then I get a full refund. If ... read more

Oh joy. Frst big hiccup of the summer plans. AA and I went to check our mail tonight. I had a priority package in my box from the consular, AA had a note for an express mail. I thought it was odd that mine was priority since i paid for express.... yeah. Visa app returned, not processed. says there was no money. Which is funny since I have all of the receipts from the money order and my account is now minus $79 that is missing. Gah. Going to call in the morning. AA also needs to check her mail and see if hers was processed. Great. ... read more

Wow, an amazing 1900+ people have read our travel blogs so far, and we're still about 8 weeks behind with our updates. But don't worry, we're slowly getting there and those of you subscribed will be getting a whole lotta updates during the next couple of weeks. We're currently in Thailand but do read on about our past shananigans in India. I also want to say a big hello and hugs to all London based friends, thanks for all the emails I've received so far, I'm thinking of you xx Pushkar is one of India’s seven holy cities and it’s overflowing with temples and holy sites. This is where thousands of pilgrims come every year to visit Pushkar’s holy lake. An even more usual site is the amount of tourists that visit the city, which is ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Fatehpur Sikri April 26th 2005

We caught an Agra-bound bus at a junction close to our guesthouse in order to reach Fatehpur Sikri, which is actually at very close distance from Agra (37 km). Though the bus was crammed, the ride was bearable because it was short. There we took a horse-cart to our destination, passing impressive fortifications of the old Moghul city. For the first time we had an air cooler in our room, an instrument to cool the air by means of water. A big metal box protrudes from the room, there is a kind of frame at the bottom, the three sides outside the room have metal grids and beneath them mats of coir. A ventilator blows the warm air from outside through this "curtain of water", where it is cooled down and blown into the room. The ... read more
