Orcha is amazing - lots of red sandstone palaces to explore. There are loads of little stairways and passages all over the place. Reminds me of one of those Escher pictures. Went right up into the top turrets. Bit nervewracking as you get the impression health and safety standards aren't what they are in old Blighty... Lots of vultures perched on top of the domes - they look part of the building, kind of like scrawny gargoyles We're staying in one of the palaces. NO more scummy backpacker life for us! Though the manager did look ascance as we rocked up in the most bizarre-looking rickshaw, all covered in dust and generally looking like shit after a 4 hour bus journey. The waiter here reminds me of Manuel off Fawlty Towers. Off to Agra then Delhi ... read more

Astonishingly, we had to come to India to ride on a camel for the first time. Actually, Jaisalmer lies on an old merchant route through the desert to Afghanistan and further on to Europe, it was the spice road. That’s the reason why you still find many camels in this region, which are used as powerful beasts of burden, and as a major tourist attraction as well. The group met at Jaisalmer’s main square for breakfast, where we made the acquaintance of a very nice Canadian couple who would be on the safari with us. We made the first part of the trip by jeep, we were eight people and packed like sardines, in addition we took part of the provisions with us. There we already wished to be on camel’s back, at least we would ... read more

Another train ride. Tigers in National Park? Wait and see I guess. After another train ride in the morning we arrived at the Ranthambhore National Park...home to lots of deer and black faced monkey's. We arrived too late in the afternoon to be able to go on a safari ride so a bunch of us went to check out the old fort...apparently Rajasthan's second largest and it is over 1000 years old. There were some nice views up there but no tiger sightings. After being disappointed by not seeing any tigers we made a short pit stop at a store where the local crafts women have their stuff on sale. They had some really neat stuff for sale but most of it not practical for me to buy seeing as I have limited luggage space as ... read more

Looking at Sari's Visit some tourist sights? Chill out time needed. Well it was a pretty uneventful day today. Six people in our group ended up having the doctor pay a visit to the hotel. Major sickness going round the group and there are a few that didn't see the doctor and are not feeling up to par. Touch wood that I'm not one of those...although in the afternoon I was feeling a bit tired and feverish but nothing like an hour's nap to rejuvenate! Basically I went down for breakfast at the hotel restaurant around 8:30 where I bumped into Rachael and David so I sat down and ate with them. David headed off and Rachael hung around and kept me company. The group had planned on making a trip to the fabric store to ... read more

Hindi blockbuster The Pink City of Jaipur Lost in translation. What a feeling to wake up in a castle and then have breakfast on the rooftop watching the peacocks give a full on show of some of their mating rituals. I might add unsuccessful or perhaps it takes a bit of time. There was this one male peacock with the full on feathers out for show and he kept on trying to attract this one female but it didn't seem like she wanted to give him the light of day. It was really kinda funny. I guess in the peacock world they like to play hard to get as well. haha Speaking of the rooftop, yesterday evening we were up there just gazing at the stars. I really wish that I was more knowledgeable when it ... read more

The trains from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer left at impossible hours, we had to take another bus although we were not very keen on it. It was said to be faster than the train, but the guidebook warned us against a tedious journey, which proved right. There was not much to see, apart from sand, sand, sand, some interspersed rocks, a few shrubs and no trees, Klaudia spotted three small antelopes, otherwise we saw mainly goats and a lot of camels. Believe us, the guidebook was right when saying that the trip would be “scenically tedious”. We travelled for about six hours, which did Stephan’s back no good, but at least the roads were good, even excellent. When we approached Jaisalmer we found out why, as the Indian army has an important base there, due to the ... read more

Castle in Dausa Secret passage in our room Elegant sari's Today we travelled to Madhogarh where we stayed in a castle. Sounds so fairytale like. After settling into our rooms and then having a bit of free time to rest up we ventured out on a village walking tour where we saw the local cobbler, rugmaker, stones being polished for sari's, sari's being decorated with beads and sequins, bangles and kid's playing a cricket game (and then the guys from our group joining in and then subsequently having the ball go missing in the field...ball thrown too hard!) It was a pleasant walk through the village. They asked that we did not bring our cameras with us because all of the kids in the past were asking for their pictures to be taken and it was ... read more

Bird Sanctuary Birds, mammals, reptiles and more. Bicycle rickshaws. In the morning we were in the fortified ghost city of Fatephur Sikri. I wasn't too impressed. Perhaps it is just a case of "I've seen too many forts" or something. The most memorable thing about this place was the courtyard where all the "games" for the King were played. I found it amusing that they played such games as Blind Man's Bluff and Hopscotch! Oh yes, and there was also a Human Parcheesi game board. Apparently the "game pieces" were all women dressed in their transparent garments. What was more interesting was the visit to the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary in the afternoon in Bharatpur. I shared a bicycle rickshaw with Robyn. From the start we were just joking. Upon seeing the tiniest of men peddling the ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur March 29th 2005

We came to Jodhpur by luxury bus with quite comfortable seats, Klaudia even managed to read a book. Once we had not decided upon a hotel beforehand, which turned out to be quite a mistake. Upon our arrival, we were immediately surrounded by an impressive number of rickshaw drivers, who seemed to smell our indecisiveness. One was shouting louder than the other trying to outwit his colleagues. We were quite helpless trying to fend them off until Stephan resorted to a trick, saying that we were taking another bus and would not stay in Jodhpur. He made them laugh when he asked whether we were the only tourists in the city. Once you prove to them your sense of humour, they also show theirs. They left reluctantly, far from being convinced, but polite enough. Then we ... read more
