saturday aug 13 I FINALLY GOT TO RIDE A CAMEL!!!! short ride. basically just around the block. i was laughing the whoooole time! arielle was behind me on and was perhaps not as happy as i was, as she remembers riding camels through israel when she was 15 and how much they hurt after a while. BUT IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! so cheers to crossing off another life goal on my "50+ things to do before i die" list... ride camel (clyde, i decided, would be the best name for him) also, off the top of my head... i know that visiting the taj mahal was also on the list, as well as staying in world capitals, so simply grabbing a hotel in delhi automatically crosses off another. oh, and swimming in oceans and seas... ... read more

molly says: oh-so-much traveling!!! left goa a few days ago. hoppped on a train and rode the FORTY HOURS to agra. trains are definitely the way to go in india. they're generally reliable and MUCH cheaper than flying and a hulluva lot more comfortable and safe than the busses. first class sleeper is well worth the few extra hundred ruppees because mostly, no one bothers you. beggars and touts are not allowed into those cars, and the beds have slightly more padding and the other passengers are usually just not that interested in foreigners. however, if all the tickets are sold for 1st class, then you get 2nd class sleeper. beggars & touts hop on at every stop and our fellow passengers simply sit and stare at us. for hours. because clearly we are far more ... read more

In the last episode, Wendy was departing Thailand for India. Now Thailand seems like a distant memory.... I arrived in Dehli, India late in the evening and at the hotel early in the morning on Saturday (7/30). The next morning I met Paula at breakfast, she is an architect from London. After our tour she will be living in Bali, Indonesia, for a year to study music. Ali, Marie & Owen soon joined us. Ali, from York, England, has been traveling around the world for the past 14 months. After India she'll travel to Nepal and then return to England. Marie and Owend are both teachers in Oxford, England. Marie teaches students in "year four" and Owen teaches history, religion and philosophy at the secondary level. We had a lively discussion about schools and school systems. ... read more

HOWEVER, we still have HOPE! because we're FABULOUS and we fucking deserve a lovely apartment and our DREAM JOBS.... whatever they may be. we will go. we will see. and we will conquer. just like we've been doing for the first couple decades of our lives. july 1 assholes! the 500 RS that i put down for 3 books that i borrowed a couple of weeks ago has been taken by the guy who rented them to me, as he went home, and now they're not sure if they can give me my 500 RS back. grrr. i'll come tomorrow morning before we catch our train out of here. we're supposed to leave tomorrow morning. we'll see how that goes. apparently we can just get our tickets right before we leave. ... right. we're not so sure that we won't end up right back at the ganpati by like 11:00 AM. trains to gaya only run on thursday and saturday. so if we miss it... we're stuck in varanasi for another week. unless we find a bus. another tin can on wheels ... read more

june 30 random thoughts by mbaade... the photos are taking forever to upload. this is turning out to be quite the process. once they're done (might be a few times over a few days) the website will be posted. my mouth hurts. so does my back. perhaps it's time to splurge on another professional massage. i might even try the fruit one. just because. why not? we're having issues today. both melancholy. i crave salt. she craves sugar. i'm getting bored with anna kerenina. good book. but now i just want anna to hurry up and kill herself so i can see how she dies. maybe all of this death and mortality in good ol' varanasi is taking its toll on me. our hotel manager guy thinks we're crazy. so does dil. i'm sure they all ... read more

After a few days in Mumbai, we headed out to Jaipur. Originally we had planned to head south to Aurangabad, to see the world famous Ellora and Ajanta caves - but unfortunately there were no tickets available on the trains, and we didn't want to hang around until there was availability - so regretfully we had to skip on this!! Next time I guess - but a word of warning to future travellers - book your tickets at least 3 days before you want to travel!! Let's talk about trains for a bit. The train system in India is actually really impressive. Frequent trains run all over the country, at very reasonable rates. You've got the very basic sleeper class, which is basically a bench, and unlimited people can pile on, stand over you, or even ... read more

june 4, 2005 mmmm we got ayurvedic oil massages today. one and a half hours of having a husband and wife team pour and massage oil into every pore of our bodies. i had the husband and he was delightfully violent with my muscles. my skin scalp and hair will smell like this for weeks, i am sure. right now there is a cultural show of sorts happening down the street from the hotel, just across from this internet cafe. same place the dalai lama lo was the other day. it's in rememberance of tiananmen square massacre in 1989. everything is very anti-china here, as was expected. we just stopped by to watch girls dancing. all dressed in pink. so much jewelry and makeup. they looked like they were having so much fun! okay, time to ... read more

After a month of Goan beaches it was back to the cattle train, destination, ‘The Real India.’ We arrived at 5:30am just in time to witness the sleeping city of Mumbai manifest itself into a whirlwind of pure chaos. The morning ritual of relieving ones bladder is no different in India, some men lined the gutters whilst others found it necessary to mark their territory on nearby walls. Ahhhh, now we must be back in, ‘The Real India.’ Our accommodation resembled something like a 4th class cabin on a cruise ship. Two single beds, measuring the length of the room, a window and a bedside table measuring the gap between the two beds. It was a tight fit to say the least, especially when both occupants are six foot three and six foot four. Our great ... read more
