Jodphur day 2 We were woken in the night by the screeching of peacocks but it didn't last long however we both woke early and decided to take a walk around the gardens. As we strolled we saw monkeys playing in the trees and peacocks strutting their stuff on the lawns. An Aussie lady was out walking and we all appreciated the coolness of the morning. We walked up the peacock stairs to the lake and the palace, small squirrels were scampering around and one very large one ran under the bridge. Eventually we made our way to breakfast and were served breakfast, no buffet! We left the hotel and Singh our new guide took us to Mehrangarh fort. This dominates the town being set high on a hill and is still maintained by the Maharajah. ... read more

Jaipur to Jodhpur We left the hotel and drove through the old city where we saw people sweeping the streets and collecting rubbish, it all looked very tidy but the shops were run down and despite its pink colour it could all do with a face lift. We continued on to the new city and there is considerable evidence that this is a thriving modern place with the new metro being built, shopping malls, and modern buildings. The houses have fences and pavements that can be walked on. It's very obvious that the impressions we had from the area our hotel was in do not marry with the rest of Jaipur. Had our hotel been in the new city we may have ventured out more. In the newspaper we read about the disrespect shown to women, ... read more

Our 2am wake-up call put paid to any dreams of lazily holidaying under swaying palms on sandy beaches. Delightful Udaipur rattles and bangs under the the towering shadow of the enormous City Palace, looking out over serene Lake Pichola and Lake Palace, that icon of Octopussy fame marooned on the lake as if tethered by an anchor, sparkling white in the morning light. There was once a young man called Om Singh Rathore (known as Om Banna), who enjoyed nothing better than riding his Royal Enfield ‘Bullet’ motorbike. Alas, one day in 1991, near the village of Chotila some 50 kms from Jodhpur, he drove into a tree and was killed. The motorbike was taken to the local police station but, that night, it disappeared – and was found next morning back at the site of the accident. It was returned to the police station and chained up. Next morning, it was back again, beside the tree where Om Banna had met his end. The police tried several more times to prevent the bike from leaving their custody, but to no avail - next morning, it was always back where the accident happened. News of this miracle ... read more

Budu byvat v Dream hoteli, ktory prevadzkuje japonec, tak sa mozno k nim pridam,bo idu aj rovnakym busom ako ja. Pevnost je fakt obrovska. Hlavne obrovske hradby. Flying day today. We fly at 1100hrs. Mr Singh told us yesterday that we would be picked up at 0900hrs. I hesitate a bit, Han hesitates a bit, we think we should leave earlier. "There is no traffic in the morning". Ok.... We decided yesterday to pack already, you never know, and to have breakfast at 0730hrs, just to be sure. Half way through breakfast, the manager arrives at our table. He has a sad announcement to make, rou flight is cancelled, and we have to leave to the airport immediately, to arrange another flight. Boay are we experienced travellers! Check out in five minutes (plus fifteen signatures, but with lightening efficiency and speed, including a non charged beer (have no clue from whom) that was not charged but is charged now, plus the apologies for ... read more

Blog 20-25 January. Rajasthan I - Jaipur, Pushkar & Jodhpur "From the pink city to pushy Pushkar and the home of pony club pants.." This last week has been our busiest yet as we ventured deep into the heart of Rajasthan. Following our fab and speedy train from Agra - where in 'chair class' we were treated to a complimentary samosa and a full flask of Chai, as close to perfect as you can get save for the loud and obnoxious American girls sitting opposite (so out of character - sorry Andrea if you're reading!) - We arrived safely into Jaipur, the Capital of Rajasthan and known throughout as the 'Pink City'. Along with Delhi and Agra, Jaipur makes up the third point on India's 'Golden Triangle'. With only two full days we headed out early ... read more

Boxing Day 26/12/2012 Feeling a little tired from the previous night’s disturbances, we had a lazy morning relaxing in the sun. After breakfast we moved rooms, as promised the night before. Our new rooms were at the top of the hotel and overlooked the swimming pool of the hotel. The children’s room was very grand and had a beautiful ornate window seat, bedecked with heavy upholstery. Joe loved the novelty of hiding behind the heavy curtains from his ‘annoying’ sisters and jumping out on them. Much to their annoyance. Vijay had recommended that we visit a genuine ethnic village so we met him at 12.00 and drove into the country to visit the Bishnoi tribe. En-route we stopped at a lakeside nature reserve with different breeds of birds and deer feeding by the water. We also ... read more

Day 9: Christmas Day. Woke at 8am, excited to share this ‘special day’ with the children. Stockings, made by Grandma, had travelled with us so duly were filled on Christmas Eve by Father Christmas. Joe had informed Santa several weeks earlier that he would be in India! The children were awake as we sneaked into their room and Joe hastily opened all his stocking gifts. The girls, in true teenage style, woke, a little grumpy and had to be cajoled into sharing Joe’s enthusiasm. Joe demolished most of the edible contents of his stocking before 9am. Presents were exchanged and we all dressed for breakfast. Breakfast was a buffet of Indian delights, paratha, vegetable curry, sambal and roti. The children had porridge and juice. We met Vijay at 11am and drove to the Maharanga Fort, the ... read more
