We had a bit of trouble with our train getting into Jodhpur. We arrived a bit early to the stop, and it didn’t seem like a main-enough city. However, an Indian passenger told us it was the last stop. We got off, and walked a bit, until we saw the train station sign, which was not titled “Jodhpur”. We quickly turned around to get back onto the train. But there was no need to rush, because the train wasn’t going anywhere; it had broken down, and no one knew for how long. We teamed up with a group of young Koreans, who appreciated the small amount of Korean I spoke, and we all decided to wait a while longer. After about 30 minutes, we asked other train passengers, who said it could take anywhere from another ... read more

Well then, Jodhpur, named after the horse riding garments, or maybe the other way around, is hot. Very hot. We arrived after a long drive to our hotel, which was called Baba Haveli, which was still swelteringly hot at 4pm. This was the first worrying sign. However, forms filled in and checked in, we had a slight stress out about a possible card fraud, however it turned out that one receipt from an ATM was a factor of 10000 out in its assessment of our remaining balance. A quick tip for this sort of occasion, using skype as a phone, by topping up with credit, is a fantastic way of contacting banks etc, as a call from India to Nationwide cost about 40p! So we went for a wander around the streets of Jodhpur with Mr ... read more

Bishnoi Village: Wow wow wow! Where do we begin? So we are now out of the city completely, experiencing rural life in the home of an incredibly hospitable working family (traditional occupation: weavers). We are sleeping in a hut, made out of cow dung (apparently great for high blood pressure!) living and eating with the whole family each night. Well - I'm just eating bread at the minute. Had a small bowl of rice yesterday and then unfortunately a bit of a relapse (yup, sick - again). But no fever this time at least. The home is beautiful in it's authenticity - it's certainly the most unique experience we've encountered yet. The atmosphere is so much more tranquil and laid back here compared to the city (although that might be something to do with the 40 ... read more

Our transport to Jodhpur was via local bus. We had booked seats but there was no air conditioning, except open windows, and the bus could have done with a good clean. It had the loudest horn ever, which played different sounds, and the driver used it constantly. We had quick stops at all the villages along the way, everyone heard us coming and everyone heard us leaving. We picked up and dropped off passengers constantly as well, so the aisle was always full of people sitting on the floor. It was a six hour trip, passing through dry hot country dotted with tough little bushes, goats and litter. There was the usual bustle of activity at every stop, local boys trying to sell bottled water and snack foods through the windows, and passengers getting on and ... read more

The sleeper train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur was very smooth and uneventful. I did not sleep much because we were not sure of which was the stop for Jodhpur since the train would continued to Delhi. I read, listened to music and to some meditations to let time pass by. Day 1 The fort Jodhpur The Blue City The train rolled into the station of Jodhpur at around 5 AM and being tired of harassing tuk tuk drivers, hotel managers we decided to take a taxi to the market area where we knew there were a few budget hostels and hotels. The tuk tuk dropped us off at the entrance of the main market. It was still very dark in spite of being almost early morning. The streets were totally empty and silent, but still very ... read more
