This morning started with me fixing the toilet. The tank didn't refill last night, so this morning I decided to turn on the water and see what happened. The tank filled. The fixture leaked significantly, but since I was taking a shower and there were no doors on the shower anyway (almost all showers are like this in India) I figured a leaky fixture didn't really matter. I'd rather have a toilet that flushes. But that's the only problem in this hotel. They delivered coffee to our room this morning and we took two bottles of water and they didn't charge us for any of it. I know they wanted a good review on airbnb.com, but even if they charged us, I would've given them a good review. Hotel Jeet Villa is inexpensive and good! And ... read more

After thoroughly enjoying the Taj Mahal we headed for Agra Fort. Agra Fort was built in the 1600s and lies along the Yamuna river. To get to Agra Fort it is just over 5 kilometers from the Taj. India has both cycle rickshaws and moto rickshaws, both popular ways to get around with the moto rickshaws being the most popular and also what we have taken for most of our trips. As we've learned more about India we've discovered that the cycle rickshaws are the poorest individuals of India, so we thought it would be best to give them some business. These people earn their money! For $2 (we could have haggled for cheaper, but it was kind of our way of donating), they would peddle Amy and I to the Fort and back - a ... read more

Geo: 26.2816, 73.0232Took the 5:15pm train to Jodhpur on Jan 20. It was a 5 hour trip arriving in Jodhpur at 10:40pm. Travel was on time and we met a young couple from Britain – Matt and Clare – who have been traveling for over a year – South America, Africa, India and then on to China and Japan. They got us very interested in going to Uganda and Rwanda – maybe next trip.We are staying at the Devi Bhawan which is outside the old city. It is a lovely respite from the noise and smog of Jodhpur. The rooms are huge and very clean. Hot water and power are a bit iffy but I will say they aim to please. We had limited hot water last night and they immediately replaced the heater unit. Lots ... read more

14th December ’11 Jaisalmer to Jodhpur 5.30am and there’s a knock on the door – the alarm hadn’t gone off! So 9 minutes later, we are up, dressed and off in a tuk tuk to the bus. It was freezing cold on the bus but I managed to nod off a few times. The bus was interesting, it had a row of 2 seats down the left side, with sleeping cubicles overhead and down the right hand side both top and bottom were sleeping cubicles too. How anyone could sleep in them was beyond me as you couldn’t exactly stretch out. We found our seats without too much trouble, the rucksacks went in the boot with a few misgivings and we were off. The bus stopped once for a 10 minutes break but we just stayed ... read more

After Mumbai, Jodhpur was literally a breath of fresh air as at last we could feel the air when we breathed. Off we went to our pre-booked B&B, Hem Guesthouse within the city walls. We have been to many places in Asia but the tuk-tuks here are the worst we have seen (although we have plenty more places in India to go to yet). They use lawnmower engines and start by pulling a cord. Then the noise is horrific. Suspension is suspect and as the streets of Jodhpur could not be described as smooth, each bump is felt through your bottom, stomach and teeth. However, it is the only way to travel due to their width in the narrow streets We stayed with a delightful family who have turned their home into a B&B. They could ... read more

Thankfully we left Indore and arrived about 10pm in Jodhpur. This kid found Ciaran in the street and took us to a really nice and cheap hotel with, wait for it.......hot water!!! Yay!! We popped up to their restaurant only to find the most amazing view of the Mehrangarh Fort. Beautiful. The next day we headed to a castle on the hill where the currentMaharaja lives. Then trundled along to the market by the clock tower which was pretty good too. To the avail of the shop keepers 'No we don't want any fucking spices!' I have no idea what we done in the evening as it feels so long ago!! We did at some point decide to do a Camel safari, not one of Ciaran's ideas. We went for the jeep option as we couldn't ... read more

We took the overnight train from Khajuraho to Delhi, spent the day in Delhi, brought some more clothes, then caught another over night train to Jodphur. Jodphur is in the state of Rajastan, we have heard good things about this area, mostly being more laid back, relax vibe, good food and good guest houses. As we got in early morning on the 16th we thought be easier to leave our bags at the train station, so we are less likely to be stalked and savaged by awaiting touts and tuk tuks, walk around Jodhpur at our leisure to find a decent guest house then come back later to collect our bags. We tried a few places in the old town which seemed alright, good price but we wanted something a bit nicer. Jodphur is known for ... read more

So we arrived in Jodhpur after and ok bus ride to then jump into an auto ric-sure to be assured that the driver knew where we wanted to go! After haggling with the price and then him literally driving to the totally wrong part of town to where he knew “Yogi’s” hostel to be, we had to stop and ask for directions from some other bloke that spoke less English than the driver – we finally made it to where we asked! The place was really nice – set on 4 floors and decorated in a kind of hip and old mix Indian style, the room was large enough and with an on suite – was perfect. The town is a little dirty and seems to have a large amount of cows eating everything that they ... read more

"Worry is like a rocking horse- you keep on going but it gets you nowhere" These are the wise words of the owner of our last guest house in Udaipur and i think its very true! He said that in India people do not worry as there is no point! But, i must admit that i have had quite a few occasions to worry over the last few days! This place incredible though- organized chaos as Danny keeps saying and i am really enjoying it! We stayed at a lovely place called Lake shore right on the lake in Udaipur on Sunday and monday night. We had a window seat right against the lake which was very pretty. Danny was happy as he could see the fish! We took a boat trip round the lake but ... read more

The journey from udaipur to johdpur was amazing, all be it very bumpy. The scenery slowly changed from lush green mountains to arid flat desert and before we knew it we had arrived. Having been told by numerous other backpackers that yogi's guesthouse was the place to be we jumped into a rickshaw and headed there, only to realise that we had been taken to cosy guesthouse! After explaining to the driver there had been a mistake, we were then dropped off at yogi's place where we were greeted by a very drunken yogi. With no cheap rooms available for that night, we agreed on a price for a room that otherwise would not have fell within our budget. From there we quickly threw the bags in our room and headed to the roof top for ... read more
