Afternoon! It's been over a week since my last entry! Mainly either because alcohol has become freely available to me again and I have been too busy spending my days swimming and sun bathing. So to recap where I last left you I was feeling pretty stupid about myself for going to Jalgaon (a town that literally has nothing going for it) when the Ajanta caves were shut. I therefore decided to cut my losses and head to Mumbai. I had had very mixed opinions of Mumbai from people; my old man described it as the worst of both western and eastern cultures. Whereas others had described it as the only place in India that is clean and you can get a decent cup of coffee. After my visit I can firmly place myself in the ... read more

One crazy place....truly movie style!! Blue waters, white sand, clear sky....very pretty indeed!!! Quite like a teenage love affair. This place is beyond irresistible. On a warm summer's day (quite hot actually, the beer cools it down ) amid friends, Palolem is the place to be with besides the unreasonably priced bamboo shacks, and there is the inexpensive beer and the remarkably flavorsome fish (squid, mackerel…ah! Yummy). It's pretty lonely though, during the balmy Indian May, but that’s when their rates are trimmed down, for the local vacationer to take pleasure in. It sure is a place that lets you leave only making you want to return. Set in the extreme South of Goa, it would take you a good 2-3 hr drive from the North (Calangute, Baga). In the end it’s worth the wait, the ... read more

Tabea, Irina und Henrike in ... read more

Getting back from such a completely zen day and realizing that I didn’t have my passport was a shock to the system. All the comfort of the day was immediately washed away with feelings of panic, disbelief, embarrassment and humor (I mean, it is funny when you think about it). We looked through everything in our room twice, then went and had dinner, and then came back and looked through everything one more time. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Our thoughts ranged from, “Well, perhaps they can just fax us an emergency exit visa and passport?” to “Here goes another trip to Mumbai!” because the closest consulate is located there. Feeling like there was nothing we could do at the moment, we rounded up the phone numbers we needed to call the airline and the consulate and went ... read more

Ruben = Thin Indian Yoga instructor with really wide spread toes. He was super nice with a calm demeanor and was easy to talk to. The class started at 8am on an interesting stone patio on the beach surrounded by palm trees. With the waves crashing in the background we are sitting right up front cross legged on our mats listening to Ruben chant Ommmmmmmmm. Then the yoga starts with Ruben repeating “Inhale in, exhallllllleee ooouuuut, slowly” in what can only be described as a new wave yoga song. Everything he says then becomes hilarious. I will now try and capture it in words but you will just have to ask us to mimic him next time you see us because we have been doing it then entire trip. “Inberted B” (actually inverted V said very ... read more

How to describe Janet and Goran? Intriguing I guess. On first blush we thought they were just a quirky married couple. He’s constantly running around asking if we’d like a drink. He’s sarcastic and a bit anxious, and really funny. She, on the other hand, is … dreamy and has a certain quiet charm about her. While she keeps to herself, which creates a certain intrigue about the two of them, Goran chats openly about their spats (“You’ll have to talk to Janet about that, she’s not talking to me right now.”) and constantly wants to be in on the action; joining us for a drink on the patio, taking us for tours on the scooter, inviting us to join them for dinner. There’s also an interesting uncertainty as to what their “story” is, not that ... read more

We arrive in Goa at 6 am and get to our B&B, the Village Guesthouse, around 7:30 am. The house is situated in the village of Palolem, in the southern part of Goa, about a 5 minute walk from the beach http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palolem. Very nice and run by a friendly (and odd) English couple, Goran and Janet…more on them later. Anyway, after waking up the owners, who were confused and sleepy but still proceeded to offer us coffee and conversation, we dropped off our bags and headed to the beach. The village of Palolem is a fishing village and most of the accommodations here are beach shacks. The VG is a bit more “upscale”, which we figured was appropriate for our honeymoon, and offers A/C (a real luxury in this town), homemade breakfast every morning and relative ... read more

This is how I'd imagined monsoon in Palolem! We are blessed with sunshine which stretches on for days, before the humidity builds and releases torrential downpours which reflect and revive. We get a fantastic deal on a penthouse apartment on the Palolem - Patnem road, just 5 mins walk through coconut groves to the beach. We are living in sparkling clean luxury complete satellite TV, internet connection, our own kitchen and huge, completely private sunbathing terrace. I take advantage of the seclusion with some serious tan line free sun worship! We go to market in Chaudi every few days for fresh fruit, veg and fish. It's a real novelty to cook for ourselves after over 11 months on the road. Coming back after our jaunt in Karnataka, we find we have become 'local'. Villagers greet us ... read more

A pigeon poos on my head whilst we wait for our bus to Mumbai...I feel very lucky, especially as for the next two and a half days we will spend over 30 hours on ‘sleeper’ buses. It’s a long way from Udaipur to Goa, but we are stopping in Mumbai, the half way point, to break the marathon journey. We catch a bus to Ritch’s Auntie Faye’s apartment where we’re staying. We had thought we’d spend a few days in the city but the just arrived monsoon is torrential so there seems little point. We’re rained in for most of the day, just popping out to buy overnight bus tickets to Goa for the following evening. But there’s still time for a night out with Ritch’s cousin Stephanie at her local club, where we meet a ... read more
