Thoughts: The Moors Last Sigh was fun to read - a huge collection of small interwoven and highly entertaining stories about a family of Portugese / Moorish origins behaving very very badly in India. Set in Cochin and Mumbai, it is a family saga spanning several generations, told in a series of anecdotes by the youngest: 'Moraes', in a conversational style the reason for which becomes skillfully apparent right at the end of the book. ... read more

Goa trip : Dec30th - Jan4th 30th: Celebrating the New-Years or christmas in Goa has become a norm for our group. It wasnt a surprise then, that people had applied for leaves as early as a year in advance(ref.Arnie). Amidst fears of terrorist attacks and last moment cancellations we managed to finally set sail for Goa on the 30th. We had booked a Toyota Qualis from one of Vivek's 'reliable' friend's friend. We were lucky this time that this fella was actually reliable and reached on time . Sai,Vivek,Raj,Saju and Me left from Marol and we picked up Arnie from his office in Vikroli. 6 of us in a Qualis was comfort, any more would have caused pain. Going was good till about an hour and then as luck would have it, disaster struck. The engine ... read more

Hi everyone! Carrying on from Claire's last entry we next bounced our way to Palolem Beach on a very noisy sleeper bus. The driver's whiskey-drunk son (supposedly one of the conductors) took a bit of a liking to us and relocated me a few times but we made it one piece and thankfully a rickshaw driver was waiting at the stop (we were dropped off at 4.30am in the middle of nowhere). Palolem Beach is beautiful - in spite of the roving packs of dogs (more from Claire on the beasts later). You can tell in high season it would be full of partying Brits but it was nice to be able to secure a lounger with ease. It was on one of these loungers I became the first to be hit by the sickness everyone ... read more

We arrived in Margao in Goa, and headed for the nearest beach - a place called Colva. Big disappointment, as it was really tacky. We didn't even get out of the taxi, and instead headed south to a place called Palolem. We'd read about it in the Lonely Planet book and it sounded fantastic - just what we were looking for. We arrived, and were immediately impressed! Palolem beach is in a half moon shaped bay - beaufiful white sand, and warm water! The beach is surrounded by tall swaying palm trees, with lots of beach huts and mini-resorts hidden among them. After walking along the beach looking for somewhere to stay, we settled on a place called Fernandes, at the northern end of the beach. Our beach hut was basic, but cute. The restaurant served ... read more

Having made a final, last minute decision to go to one last beach before the end of our trip we took three hot sticky buses from Panjim to a tiny beach town called Palolem. Palolem isnt meant to be one of the most idyllic beaches in Goa due to it being a little too discovered by tourists, however now that we are in May it is classed as 'out-of-season' for this part of the country so when we arrived it was quiet enough to be blissful but still busy enough that some restaurants and guesthouses remained open. Needless to say we didnt struggle to find accomodation at 'out-of-season' price, in fact we got a nice little purple beach bungalow which opened out straight onto the beach for a mere 150 rupees a night. Although this is ... read more

NAMASTE! Aufgrund allg.

So having seen some North Goa we decided to head back to Palolem in the South. It is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in India and we think so. There is a good atmosphere here too and it's easy to get around. Our friends from Anjuna wanted to check out the beach too and will probably follow us down in a day or so. I decide to get some excercise in while I'm here so I rented a Kayak and paid for 5 days up front. I went out for my first paddle on our first morning and got a little farther each day. It's nice to do and I got around to different beaches down the coast. The bar staff didn't seem to mind me giving them wet money... :) I ... read more

So I can't quiet believe a month has passed already , I'm on my last night in Goa and am particularly sad to be leaving Palolem. It has been two weeks of relaxing, walking, enjoying the sun, good food, great people and some really good music nights. Events of note since I last wrote: the poor dead Dolphin that was washed up onto the beach...the only one I saw!( huge it was!) St Patricks' night on the beach listening to live music around a bonfire and some great craic with a girl from Armagh. And just spending time in the most beautiful place. The down side is that my camera packed in two days ago and so have missed some really nice shots of the places and people here. So a long day ahead tomorrow, flying ... read more

We arrive in Palolem and walk up the beach again to find the right spot for us which we do. Then head for a swim. There is a big rock sticking out of the water and there are 4 people on it. I decide we should head out and join them, hoping there will be a good jump off is somewhere. As we arrive they all leave so we climb up anyway. The rock is actually hard to get on to and I slip off. I felt a tear on my shin and I fell backwards on to a rock in the sea. I sheepishly swin back to the beach in pain. Thats just typical!! juat as the cut on my knee is healing I get new war wounds. The cut isn't too bad but on ... read more

Happy St Patrick's day folks! Not that there seems to be any Paddy's celebrations going on here but I'm sure I'll find something! Not a lot to report, I have been doing exactly what I said I'd do and that's not much of anything. Been soaking up the sun, doing a bit of reading and enjoying the Goan/Indian food. Went to a party on Saturday ( tell us something exciting I hear you say!) but it was a bit different. It was what they call a headphone party. It's like a normal club night up until 11pm, and the I can only assume, to keep the locals happy and keep the noise down, after 11pm everyone puts on headphones and choose between 3 DJs to listen to. When I was told about this, I thought what ... read more
