After a hectic 2 weeks it was time for a break so we got our first internal flight to go south to Goa (landing in a monsoon is not great for an apprehensive flyer). I was really looking forward to spending 5 days relaxing by the beach and partying at night in Baga, as described in the Lonely Planet. However, the place should instead be called Saga and whoever wrote the guidebook obviously hasn’t been there for a while. 80% of people are 55+, which is fine, but not really what I was looking for. I’d describe Baga as a slightly warmer Faliraki or Magaluf with a much older crowd and no indication that you’re even in India. Not being able to stand it for more than a couple of days we explored northern Goa and ... read more

... read more

We got into Goa a little before noon. We decided on Arambol as our beach destination because it was quiet and secluded. It was another wonderful rest stop on our long journey. Our hotel was not only steps away from the beach, but was ran by some of the nicest guys we've met yet. Raj, Ummesh, Milan, and Egan did not only feed us the best food we've had yet, but they looked at us as friends, as we did them. The first day we pretty much spent on the beach talking with our new friends. The next day we got some scooters so we could go scooting around the lush greenery of Goa. We got lost in no time flat, but there is no better place to get lost. We got on a major highway ... read more

Arambol What a hard life, another beautiful beach resort!! It was low season when we arrived, and it meant we were able to get a great deal on an apartment-style room, complete with shower (usually you just get a plastic bucket), kitchen, roof terrace, and last but not least a FRIDGE!! Again there was a lot of swimming and beach activities, with little bamboo restaurants keeping us refreshed day and night. GP even invented his own cocktail, aptly named "Squiffy Liffy", Due to the number consumed, the recipe is a bit hazy, but Gin and lemon were involved ....... delicious after a long hot day. Amusingly after such beverages, the boys managed to lose their clothes on more than one occasion after a late night swim. Local sights were of the natural sort here, one amazing ... read more

so we moved up the coast a bit, which is a bit backward as next we are heading south but there are no rules. anjuna was alright, but it didn't have much atmosphere, as everyone was on bikes all the time it was hard to meet people and have chats. so we are in arambol, which is really lovely. whereas anjuna seemed to be all about old hippies, arambol is all about the new-wave of hippies! we have noticed a hierarchy of tourists here in goa. you have to imagine that john cleese and the two ronnies sketch where they are looking down on each other.... the lowest of the low is the two week package holiday people, who are almost all british or russian. they just come for beaches and beer and are generally looked ... read more

On the surface Arambol in Goa and Gokarna in Karnataka look a lot alike. Both towns have long palm-tree studded beaches surrounded by rocks and jungle. Both towns are situated on the Konkan coast of South India. In both towns Italian and Israeli food is readily available alongside Indian in the local restaurants. However, after staying in both places one thing is clear. Arambol is no Gokarna. A couple weeks ago I stayed nearly ten days in a primitive beach shack at Gokarna's most remote and isolated beach. Here, a lack of electricity meant fellow travelers entertained themselves at night by building bonfires, playing instruments, singing, doing yoga, juggling fire, and chatting. During the daytime I would make the long hike along the rugged coast to check e-mail and buy conveniences unavailable where I was staying. ... read more

Firstly i must tell you about these guys we met in Hampi, they have bought a rickshaw and are planned to drive round the south of India on it. Straight away well could tell that these guys were going to get into some sticky situations as drama seemed to follow them, but they were always laughing looking at eachother for help. We wish them the best of luck, they are going to need it! They told us they have no battery and you need to drive fast at night time for the front light to work well, but when your going that fast its hard to avoid the potholes. So they have to drive slowly with hardly any light at all! Hampi was such a beautiful place but we thought we had seen enough of the ... read more

After a couple of beautiful, sun-soaked weeks, Mel & I decided that it was finally time to move on to the next part of our trip. There is just so much to see in India, and unfortunately our time is limited. There was one more thing I really wanted to do before we left the southwest coast though. For nearly 20 years now I have been a fan of psytrance music, and over 20 years ago, certain places in the state of Goa were some of the foundations and epicenters of the genre. I was determined to seek out and experience the remnants of the original Goa trance scene - who knows when or if I'll ever get back there, so I figured I had to do it now. For this reason we moved from Arambol ... read more

Hello from Arambol, a beautiful beach in northern Goa. We have spent the past week checking out more than a dozen tropical beaches - needless to say, I am in heaven. I don't mean to rub it in (especially for those back in Raincouver), but we haven't been pelted with a single drop of rain since we arrived in India! After Hampi we hopped an overnight bus, which turned out to be an 8-hour trip from hell. We got the sleeper berth right at the back of the bus, so we actually caught air off the mattress when the driver went over bumps - and the road was pretty much all bumps. Added to that were the nonstop diesel fumes, traffic jams, and hot, cramped quarters - just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, ... read more
