I had to work Saturday but doing that got me Monday and Tuesday off work. Laurent and I had a hotel in Hong Kong booked for the weekend and were leaving Saturday evening. Saturday day was another sad one, last Saturday Val left and this Saturday Fiona and Laura left, the Irish left me too. They were going back to Ireland. Destry and I met them for lunch to say good bye. After work on Saturday I met Laurent and we went to Hong Kong, we didn't arrive until late so after getting some food we went straight to bed. We had already planned the things we wanted to do while in Hong Kong so on Sunday we got the tube to Tung Chung where there is usually a cable car ride to Ngong Ping but ... read more

We left Thailand on a very early flight to the city of Hong Kong. Landing was a bit surreal as the plane decends over the mountains and then touches down just shy if the water. It felt very low! Not quite German Wings mountain low but it was still a concern. Immediately the first thing you notice about Hong Kong is its similarities to London. The road signs are in English, the highway resembles the M25. The journey from the airport felt like heading into central London! Even the cold weather and misty fog resembled home. I started to believe I was actually on my way home in the taxi, however the journey only cost £9.96 and he offered me change! A London cabbie generally wants about £8000 and to sleep with your wife, so I ... read more

Four days spent in Hong Kong! Could've spent longer here but we're not made of money! It's so freaking expensive! It's worse than London! For example an Urban Decay Naked Palette is £58 over here! It's £37 in the U.K. and USA! Everyone here has money though so I guess they can afford it. I've loved people watching over here, something I've noticed is there are a lot of very well dressed people. I'm not just talking well put together, they're wearing more named brands than a chav exiting Dagenham market! Except these are legit Gucci shoes and Prada hang bags they've got. There are even shops like Dior Jr and Fendi for kids! Among the high end stores which are EVERYWHERE I managed to find a H&M on our first night here, we've packed for ... read more

Today, we’ll fly to Vietnam after a wonderful few days in Hong Kong. The weather here is usually foggy and cool this time of year, but they’re apparently having the same kind of winter as east Tennessee. We’ve had three days of blue sky, blue water, and temps in the 70s and 80s, and spent two days exploring two of the 263 (I did not count) outer islands: Lamma Island and Cheung Chau Island. You can’t do anything in Hong Kong without crossing water, and dozens of boats and ships are moving through Victoria Harbor between Kowloon and Hong Kong at any time. We took one ferry to get to the central piers, changing to other ferries to the outer islands. Lamma was highly recommended as a place to hike and eat seafood, so we planned ... read more

A place I called home I thought a year was a long time… turns out it isn’t! I spent eight and a half years living in Hong Kong, straight out of university and my first job was in Asia. I had a blast! I got to a point where I wanted to explore more of the world and left Hong Kong to give Sydney a try. Returning to Hong Kong after a year away was less emotional than I had thought! There’s something about routine and familiarity that we crave and appreciate as humans. For me Hong Kong felt so normal and I slotted right back in – a year didn’t make a whole lot of difference! I had a busy week catching up with all my friends there and celebrating being another year older! I ... read more

Chinese New Year in Hong Kong – January 2017 The Year of the Rooster and I arrived in Hong Kong at the same time – naturally I’m assuming the fabulous firework show, taking place over the harbor, is in honor of my arrival – oh vanity, where is thy sting? LOL……but hey, it could happen, right? Another 20+ hour travel itinerary had me leaving Las Vegas in the middle of the night on a red-eye flight to Minneapolis, where I connected with my second flight on to Seattle. Just 30 minutes here to make my Delta flight on to Hong Kong (god, the things I do to accumulate frequent flyer miles – must stark raving mad!). It’s a long 14-hour flight nonstop to Asia, but having flown this route so many times, I swear I could ... read more

Back in October 1996, I landed with my backpack in Hong Kong. Plan was to avoid a settled life in Europe and hope for some adventures around the world. Well, that was just over twenty years...I guess I've had my fair share of adventures. I tend to say today...if you had told me twenty years ago what was coming ahead...I would have asked straight on where do I sign....including all the good and bad days of these twenty years! Imagine, my first two months in HK, I lived in TST, Kolwoon....24 of us in less than 120sq meters! Yes, that was 8 people per room! So when I see people complaining about their life, or not being happy of what is given to them, my answer is always the same. If you want a fun life, ... read more

Geo: 22.2855, 114.158WEDNESDAY, January 18I woke up early - and I had my clothes all out, so I would disturb Glenn. Glenn agree with me that any day we would be arriving in port, he would wake up early and go up on the Deck 12 to watch us pull slowly into port. However, since today was a SEA DAY, Glenn got to sleep in.I am still trying to scout out a place for me to relax and to settle in and cross stitch. I library was too cold and small, so I walked across the pool deck into the Cafe area. I met a 72 year old lady, Norma. She looked lost. She needed some coffee that early in the morning. I told her to follow me and I led her to the coffee. Then ... read more

Heyyyyy! I made it! I know you, me AND the Delta customer service team are all surprised! My jet lag isn't so bad, but I did force myself up early and out as I only a 1.5 days ( really 1 day if you exclude all airport transit). Here's my observations: 1) a whole lot of people live in Hong Kong (seriously does no one work during day? Why are you all out and about on a weekday??) 2) they do love their meat - I may become a vegetarian 3) consumerism, consumerism, consumerism - mainly name brand! At first I couldn't figure out what they sold in malls if they had all these night markets. Night markets = knock offs and EVERYTHING else; Malls /shopping centers = Gucci, Armani, etc etc 4) 7-11 at every ... read more
