Leaving behind the beaches of Indonesia was so hard and we were expecting the change of pace of Hong Kong to be tough, especially as we were visiting in rainy season. But we both fell in love with one of the most beautiful cities we've ever visited. We arrived late at night and managed to get a painless taxi to the hotel, paying the extortionate, but expected amount of £40. We'd had good intentions of using the train but we were so tired and a little grumpy that our beach time had ended that we decided 'to hell with the budget' - that turned out to be the mantra for the last week of our trip. We stayed in a very interesting hotel, called the T Hotel, which is run by students training for a career ... read more

Hong Kong. The final frontier and the final exotic city I was to visit on what will turn out to be a sixteen month odyssey by the time I get back to Denver. What a city it is! A modern metropolis that still retains its old Asian charm from yesteryear. After arriving into the international airport I managed to hop onto the city bus to the Kowloon district of the city that overlooks the famous central Hong Kong skyline. I was happy to be here and the setting and city had a few surprises up its sleeves that would be a fantastic ending to what has been the journey of my lifetime. Riding the bus into the city I was able to secure a hotel room in a seedy mall of sorts for a bargain price ... read more

Ni hao from Hong Kong. We landed late evening and made our way to our hostel and we're greeted by the lovely Eleanor. A quick check in and dump of the bags and we were in a bar in time for happy hour!! Result. The G and T's were flowing as we had a good catch up. Eleanor had to leave us to catch her flight and we decided it was prob best to go to bed (we had been up since 4am!) The next morning we were up really early to get to the Chinese passport office to try and get our visas. If you didn't already know, we had an absolute nightmare in London trying to get them and gave up in the end. Numerous people had assured us we could get them (with ... read more

Ever since we started sharing an apartment together Destry and I had been talking about taking a trip to Hong Kong Disney so on May 12th after we finished work off we went. We had a hotel booked and went straight there. We had decided to only spend one day at Disney and as there was a bus back to the Chinese border straight from Disney we chose the Sunday as Disney Day. As we were having a fun filled weekend we spend the Saturday at Ocean Park, in Hong Kong which celebrated its 40th birthday this year and was also Hong Kong's first theme park. The park is split in to two sections, the Waterfront and the Summit. There is a 1.8km cable car and 1.3km funicular railway joining the two parts of the park. ... read more

After enduring/enjoying the coldest weather yet, we have finally found cherry blossoms: on Sado Island, almost the last stop on our journey. We first visited Nyuto Onsen, staying at Tsurunoya Onsen, a tiny, old collection of rustic buildings that reminded me of Camp Nakanawa, the place used for the Tennessee Scenic River Association’s Whitewater Rendezvous. One big difference was that the place has sulfur water hot springs and baths for everyone. Tom and I enjoyed a “private” bath, which has a tub plenty big enough for two people, but we could have used the outdoor baths, either for women and men separately or for both together. We decided that we’d visit the mixed-sex bath only after dark, but by the time it got dark, it was so cold that we weren’t going anywhere outdoors! We escaped ... read more

Geo: 22.3214, 114.173Coffee at McDonalds, then caught the courtesy bus to China Terminal then the 973 bus to Stanley, had lunch and relaxed at the cafes walked through the market.  Linen was amazing but will wait until we see Shenzhen and what we can get from there.  People from here are also going but with a different company so will be interesting to see if we catch up on our tour.  We all had drinkies in the lounge and caught up with everyone, really good 2 hour catch up the elderly couple 75 years old are off at mid night from Perth going to Barcelona for 3 nights and then a cruise to Norway for 12 nights.  Hard life but hell we could get used to it they were just not leaving until 12am so booked ... read more

Geo: 22.3214, 114.1738th April, 2017We slept in, had a coffee at McDonalds, went to the street bakery which there is plenty off and bought a pork roll and cakes, very nice. Caught a taxi to the Flower Market, just wish I could have bought some of the plants home, incredible really worth having a look at and today being Saturday it was packed, we have been warned not to do much on Saturday and Sundays. Walked to the Gold Fish market, heaps of bags of fish, tanks with turtles in them a whole street with fish hanging in bags for people to buy then next door a shop that sold the tanks, food and anything else you needed. Getting to the Market we walked through the Electronic market, huge with a lot of clothes as well ... read more

Geo: 22.3214, 114.1735th April, 2017We went for coffee to McDonalds across the street and Mick recognised the Head teacher from the Yarram High School, Lyn and Lynette arrived in Hong Kong on Saturday, small world. We run into the four from Pakenham quite often, twin sisters who married brothers, usually meet them all in the lounge at 4pm free wine and snacks, no beer so we bring our own. They leave tomorrow for Bali their brothers 50th birthday.Mick booked us on the Victoria Harbour Dinner cruise for tonight, picked up at the Hotel and dropped back, cannot wait to see the Symphony of Lights on the Harbour while cruising, hard life!Great buffet and the cruise on the Harbour was nice, the lights did not come up to expectation but wonder if it was because of the ... read more
