Picture if you will, a crowd of people, an old lady, paper tigers, candles and incense, all next to a five lane busy road, and underneath a large flyover, next to a continuous flow of pedestrians, and next to a pedestrian crossing...well, that's what happens down the street from me, and I have finally learned the gist of what is going on.... The flyover I live next to is known as the "ducks neck" - I presume due to the curved shape of the road, and the curved neck of a dead duck hanging in a restaurant window. Apparently it is a good place to do this 'procedure'. Under the flyover where it crosses over the main road is where there is a gathering of old ladies and candles, incense and paper tigers. I have walked ... read more

Day 1: Life on the road began when we got to Hong Kong, and met our snazzy little Cantonese lady, Kenniess. She had a wonky fringe, silly jokes, and a warming personality. She took us to the big circular building, which was to be our hotel (South Pacific Hotel) for our stay. We then fell asleep for the day, beginning our jet lag for the week. That evening we rode on a skinny tram like the Knight Bus from Harry Potter around town. Day 2: We woke up at 4:30am (jet lag) and played cards until breakfast. We decided, as it was 'all you can eat', to eat all we could eat. We were full. We had an after-breakfast nap at 10, but this surpassed the alotted time, and we woke up at 14:02, making us ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! OK I know that was a while ago and we are almost into February but we have been working hard.... on our tans since arriving in Western Australia!! Anyway.....here are some pics of our time in HK.... We stayed at the J W Marriot on HK Island, thanks to the daughter of a friend and mates rates!!!! We had a great room, recently refurbished and facing the harbour....it had been a while since we had a bit of luxury and a very welcome experience it was too!! This was the first time I had stayed at a J W Marriot and thought it was going to be an average American corporate hotel....wrong! It was excellent and I would definately recommend it if you are in Hong Kong.....the location was great; walking distance to ... read more

JUSTINO On our last day in Beijing Heidi and Zack were able to get out of the hotel and see some sights. We went to the Temple of Heaven, an incredibly beautiful place, but what makes it even more interesting is all of the dancing, singing, music playing, and gambling going on in the gardens around the temple. As is typical in China there was a long list of rules (e.g. our hotel pool required that Zack and I with our buzzcuts wear shower caps) in front of the Temple. One of them was that you couldn't charge for dancing lessons. We were all happy to leave the cold behind in Beijing and head to Hong Kong. We got an amazing room overlooking the Victoria Harbor where we had a front row view every night to ... read more

Monday 3 November - Tuesday 11 November Hong Kong seemed so organised after the other Asian countries we'd visited - the gleaming skyscrapers and extremely reliable train service were initially a shock to the system. Our visit was a quick one - to buy a much-needed new laptop for Steve (and spend 5 days setting it up), and to visit our friend Vicky from South Africa and her Scottish partner Paul. Highlights Dinner, cocktails and nights out with Vicky and Paul and his mom. The tram ride to The Peak - view over Hong Kong’s nightscape and city lights. Steve bought a new super small laptop, perfect for travelling. Valerie got a new camera and underwater case for scuba diving. Staying at Vicky and Paul’s lovely flat while they were away: thanks guys it was just ... read more

Australia had decided to play one of its Bledisloe Cup matches in Hong Kong so that was the perfect reason to return to the amazing city and show off my new little boy to one of my bestest friends who lived there. So off we took on our 10 hour flight.... the flight left perth at 10am and it was actually quite successful with our just starting to walk 11 month old. The flight back on the other hand...disastourous :( It has left us scared for a long time...but a quick summary is the little man was asleep at the airport and then when we got on the plane (11pm) however a baby right beside us in the baby capsule aisle screamed the whole time and started waking him up. So he got crankier and crankier ... read more

After a very disturbed night - that is all we are going to say - we eventually got out of bed at 12 noon which was a real shame l as we had such a lot of things we wanted to do. We decided the take it really easy as l did not feel able to venture very far. We spent the afternoon trying to complete a couple geocaches. This proved quite difficult as the huge skyscrapers made it almost impossible to get a consistent signal. We did manage one but the second was impossible as the bearings kept changing. Turning to our last day in Hong Kong. Because we were not flying until the late evening we decided we should make every last second of our stay in Hong Kong. By the way Nancy kept ... read more

China Trip Journal - 12 Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:00 PM Travelling by air, cab, and ferry. T and I left for Shenzhen, then to Hong Kong for his Hong Kong meeting. We almost didn't make it to our Hong Kong flight in time due to air ticket issues. But all was resolved at the time we planned to fly out. We arrived in Shenzhen airport and took a cab ride to the ferry to go to Hong Kong. The ferry trip is about one hour. There's not a lot of people on the boat, so crowding and being pushed around by other passengers are not an issue at the time. So, I wanted to find out how much of a difference there is in Hong Kong compare to Chengdu. We arrive at Hong Kong pier ... read more

Hong Kong - How much bbq duck can you eat in the land of suzie wong??Well, a lot if you're a 6'5" brit who loves his msg. It was our second visit to the steamy city of Hong Kong in 7 months and it was no coincidence that we picked this cramped island for a whirlwind visit. From the weird, wonderful and sometimes downright putrid smells, to the maze of undercover walkways linking all the designer department stores, unbearably humid weather, delicious restaurants with pickled poultry hanging from their windows, dozens of tailors offering you discounts on 'quality made' clothing, the contrast of ludicrous wealth and prosperity with the humble offerings of street hawkers, the magnificence of the city skyline from kowloon....you either love it or hate it....and you can confidently lump us into the former ... read more

Hi everybody. Woke up today after a good night's sleep - aided by of course - a good evening the night before. We know that we do go on a lot about our drinking habits but what else this there to do - and tell you about. Anyway l woke up and opened the window to our first view of Hong Kong. The view was of a lot of very high rise buildings and a group of local Chinese doing their Tai Chi excercises down below. It was really relaxing to watch but that was as far it went. Today we had organised an excursion. There was no time for breakfast as we had to at a different hotel for 8.15. By the by - did you know that all tour guides in Hong Kong are ... read more
