Stel popped over for a visit friday 10th through to Tues 14th June. We had lunch at Wagyu, which was pretty good, though a bit flash for us? Good set menu. I left them to it after lunch and they went out drinking. At 8.30pm I was reading a book in bed when they stumbled in. Scott wanted me to order room service because they hadn't eaten, Stell was running around like a madman turning out all of the lights, yelling it was bedtime. The next morning they swore they'd been given the rufies! it can't be that they're getting older, they must have been drugged! Stel had a covered one of the suede chairs with a lovely black vomit - all in all they thought a pretty good night....... We went to Yum Cha at ... read more

Hanoi to Nanning Our time had come to leave Vietnam and its 30c beers. We could hear China whispering to us to come and get her. We were hoping the next 10hrs on the bus would be worth the sore bums as it was the first chapter in our China sojourn. Luckily for us there wasn't many people on the bus and we were able to stretch out across the back seats on the winding pot hole riddled roads en route to a fascinating place that remains relatively unchartered from the hordes of independent travellers that fill the Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia bloc. You know that you have arrived in China when you hit the border crossing and the roads go from crumbling concrete Swiss cheese on the Vietnam side to well-maintained tarmac on Mao's ... read more

...I'm not joking or exaggerating. I entered the queue at 10.23am. I had all the paperwork, I had both our passports and prepared myself for the fact that i'd probably spend most of the morning waiting to get our visas extended. I wasn't prepared for the double backer queue that stretched to the top of the stairs.....2 hours later I had successfully .....got a ticket for another queue.... I was annoyed After 4 hours I was angry. After 6 hours, I just didn't care about life anymore. Finally at 5pm i was called to the window. the man gave me a single sheet of paper and told me to come back on the 2nd June to pick up our visa's. grrrghhhhhhhhh. ... read more

Did the Dragons back hike - started at Island Resort in Siu Sai Wan. Great views down to Big Wave beach and Shek-o. Was muggy as hell and the 500 steps at the start were challenging. Haven't sweated so much before - note to self - pack towel next time. one of the girls spotted a snake. it got out of the way pretty quickly. Mini bus back to Shau Kei wan MTR station - $7 and a crazy driver. The mini buses have a speedo on full display for passengers to see (thank you HK govt) as the drivers are notorious for speeding. Interestingly, the mini buses came into being after the 1967 Hong Kong riots when China Motor bus and Kowloon Motor bus encouraged their workers to go on strike, grinding the city to ... read more

The last time that I came to HK, there was this terrible tragedy where some lunatic in the Philippines took hostage a bus full of Hong Kong tourists. And so it was only appropriate that this time round another world event took place on my first day in HK; yes Mr. Bin-Laden was found. I’ll include more about my actual internship in another post, but I can say that I have a feeling it is going to be much better then my one in Beijing. I suppose it’s easier for a foreigner to slip into the already paved way of working in HK. What stood out most to me when looking in retrospect is that I have a variety of work in HK and there are no daily doubts of my sanity and counting down the ... read more

This will be a quick post since we weren't in Hong Kong very long. The last entry put us just arriving in Hong Kong, so I'll start from there. We did end up going to see the giant Buddha on Lantau Island (thanks for mentioning that Avanie and Becky!) the day after we arrived. We took the train to the island, ate at a very authentic restaurant, and then hiked up the billion stairs to the stop where the statue was! That was 3 days ago and my legs are still sore. :) After walking around the island for an hour or so, we headed back to our hotel to get our bags, then back to the train to get to the airport for our 10:00pm flight to bangkok. By the time we got to our ... read more

Arrived Hong Kong 22nd March and departed for Home on the 26th March. Hong Kong seems to be very polluted. The photos show just how 'smoggy' it is. Because we were here for such a short time we booked two trips. Our first day, we got the Star Ferry across to Kowloon, and wandered the shopping areas before coming back in the afternoon and planning the next two days. The hotel we are staying is in the more authentic part of the Island. In a couple of years the developers will have made sure it comes up to scratch!! Everywhere there is building work, with very little space, the only way is up. Any way a regular shuttle bus runs down to the harbour and to shopping precincts The trips were: 1 The Peak Tram, up ... read more

The concept of "dim sum" basically refers to that late breakfast/early lunch concept (known as "brunch" in the West) where people select various little portions of food and make an entire meal and social gathering. The Spanish refer to their little appetizers as "tapas" and so on. So the Cantonese have dubbed their version, "dim sum". I have only provided this long-winded definition because as I spent my first 24 hours in Hong Kong, I can't help but to see the parallel between this city-state and the concept of dim sum itself. Hong Kong is a huge buffet table and everyone is invited to take what they want and need from its vast number of "dishes". My oh-so-adorable hotel is the perfect reflection of the shallow side of this city. Everything in it is quite funky ... read more

2010, and our posting to Hong Kong, were coming to an end far too quickly. Christmas, which we had long anticipated, was suddenly upon us. For the third time we were back to visit Santa at Pacific Place. Georgia had some memory of visiting Santa the previous year, and was keen to see him again. Byron was just keen, as he usually is. The Christmas settings were delightful, and Georgia and Byron happily ran amok with many other children. And then the big meeting. Santa this year was different from the previous two years, and while he had the appearance of a prescription drug abuser, he was welcoming and almost coherant. Most importantly, Georgia and Byron enjoyed the exchange, although in the photos it seems Georgia has some reservations about the man in red. With ... read more

No fim dos anos 90 ... read more
