Hi Everyone Can l begin by asking your indulgence. Forgive any obvious spelling mistakes or the lack of good grammar but l am working under harsh circumtances - on the 25th Floor of the City Garden Hotel in downtown Wan Chi on Hongkong Island. That enough of the orientation (sorry about that pun - as l am still sober). Anyway. Can l begin by giving those interested a little geography of the route we took to get here (apart that is of persauding Nancy to come that is). We left Newcastle at a very civilised time at 17.50 via London Heathrow Terminal 5 over flying directly over Copenhagen, Riga, Moscow, Siberia and south through China to Hong Kong arriving through 7 time zones at 16.00 hours. Nancy and l were both concerned about our baggage going ... read more

5th OCTOBER 2008 - RAINY DAY ON HONG KONG ISLAND!! I slept well again and got up thankful that we had booked 2 nights and did not have to cart our backpacks around again! My shoulders could not take the strain so soon as they still hadn’t recovered from yesterday!! The weather looked miserable and all the people had umbrellas up. We had planned to go to Repulse Bay (what a name for a beach) but those plans were now scuppered and we had to go to plan B. We bought breakfast from a supermarket along the way and then had to go shelter in a local supermarket with hundreds of other people whilst the rain eased. We had been warned that a typhoon was coming but this was more like a monsoon! Whilst waiting, it ... read more

4th OCTOBER 2008 - THE PEAK TRAM!! When I awoke on 4th October - day 3 - I felt Good!!! I had slept well again and was fairly happy that we were moving on to new a new part of Hong Kong and most of all......a new Hostel! We had already visited Tourist Information and they had advised us where to go to find a hostel! We planned our journey, put the heavy backpacks on and set off along the 15 minute walk to the harbour! Once at the harbour we purchased breakfast from our new favourite bakery and ate it on a bench in the harbour. My back was already hurting slightly but we thought the rest of the way would be straightforward........on how we were wrong!!! After breakfast we caught the boat across to ... read more

Back in Hong Kong, and I was lucky enough to have a flat sorted before I arrived. I’m living with a friend (Amy) in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. It’s a lovely place in an excellent location. Before I started work I enjoyed watching the Olympics, and there was a big screen in Victoria park for people to go and watch, however, the Cantonese commentary was not that helpful for me! Thanks to the Olympics the public sports facilities are free until the 30th September so I have been frequenting the outdoor 50m pool a ten minute walk away, it’s lovely! We live very near a fantastic market so now that we have a fridge, we can stock up on fresh fruit and veg whenever we need, and soon we will brave the live fish ... read more

We're now in the country of Hong Kong. They have their own Olympic team, their own government, their own laws, but they're still part of China. The legislative elections actually took place when we were here. Half of the seats are voted by citizens and the other half are voted by special interest groups - who are mainly business groups. Whilst the citizens mainly vote democratic, whilst the business groups are unsurprisingly pro-Beijing. The end result gave the democrats the veto they needed to block legislation sent from Beijing. This system will change soon, though. In 2017 the Executive will be voted for solely by the citizens, and the same will be true of the Legislative by 2020. Not sure what's going to happen then.... Hong Kong is an incredible place where no piece of land ... read more

So after nearly six weeks of living off chocolate danishes, bananas and Subway rolls it's time to start heading home. I left the rest of the posse at the hitching spot in Wanaka as they headed up to the Snowpark to ride with the Japanese pro team. It had snowed the night before and as I dragged my bags into town to catch my bus to Christchurch airport, the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. Lucky, lucky buggers. The flight from Christchurch to Auckland went smoothly - no weather problems this time, and eleven hours later the plane lands in the sea (anyone who's been to Hong Kong will understand). And as soon as I step out of the airport I realise that wearing a hoodie, a beanie, and a snowboarding jacket was a big ... read more

After an exhausting 14 hour flight we finally arrived at Hong Kong International airport and it took another 2 hours to get to our hotel. I was miserable, I got sick on the plane and felt horrible the last seven hours of the flight. Needless to say we went straight to sleep once we reached our hotel; it was perfect considering it was 10 pm HK time, so when we woke up the next morning we were ready to explore. We went to Hong Kong park on our first day and walked around Wan Chai and Admiralty ( 2 districts on HK island), it was hot but raining. At one point we walked into a building to use the restroom and when we exited (maybe four minutes later) it was pouring-- but still HOT! We ... read more

The overnight thunderstorms left us with an even more diminished view than we had seen from our hotel window the previous morning and it was obvious we would not be taking a tram to The Peak on this visit which was a real disappointment. After another good breakfast, we checked out of our hotel and headed to a street Market where the traders peddled everything from clothes and tacky souvenirs to bamboo plants, fake designer watches to ‘100 year old eggs’ (real eggs caked in black soil) and cuts of meat. From here, we took a taxi (for the first time we could travel in a 5-passenger taxi together) to Central for the Star Ferry Harbour Cruise. We noted Hong Kong has the most expensive metered taxis in China, starting at $HK16 although still cheap by ... read more

Getting to Hong Kong turned out to be quite a mission, not helped by the fact that we were delayed 14 hours in Guilin having turned up to the airport at 8.30 only to discover that the flight had been cancelled and we would have to wait for the 10.55 fight instead! This threw us into a panic as we had read that the border into Hong Kong closes at midnight and we would probably not get there in time, also we had paid an arm and a leg for two nights in a super hotel and it looked like we would probably forego the first night! An extrememly lengthy conversation then ensued with a very nice lady from South China Airways who looked up bus and train times for us and wrote in Chinese what ... read more
