I had to decide quickly . . . a colleague of mine was organizing a study tour trip to China for about a week and the expenses were covered – I just needed to respond within a couple hours. Yes, normally a no-brainer for me but I had other work obligations at that time. Ultimately, I made that quick decision to go and I am glad I did. This was definitely a ‘learning experience’ trip. We were a group of 12 professors, doctoral students, and technology specialists. My colleague is overseeing the creation of a high school in Suzhou and we were going to see that, meet with students, visit schools, meet with Chinese university faculty, and to take in some cultural sites. We were on the go with a full schedule each day spending one ... read more

Hey everyone! Before setting off for my year abroad, I was a little wary about living in major cities for the year. I was afraid that they would all be like New York City: dirty, smelly, and overcrowded. Most of them were. But during my time living in these cities (Seoul, Taichung, Beijing, and Shanghai) I discovered that there are definitely benefits to living in major cities that can make them worth suffering through the dirty smelliness of major cities. One such perk (and arguably the biggest one) is the food, which is what I want to talk about here. Shanghai in particular was amazing when it came to food. When Americans talk about Chinese food, most people are thinking about what is a very Americanized version of Chinese food: orange chicken, General Tso's, sweet and ... read more

Alle Chinesen waren natürlich unglaublich motiviert, da grade das chinesische Team so gut ... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/all-once Due to being crazy bogged down in work this weekend, the next post will likely be a reflection about one particular aspect of living in Shanghai. For now though, I will leave you with photos that I have from a study break trip I took to visit the art district of Shanghai, known as M50. On that note, I should get back to that essay I am in the middle of writing. Until next time!... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up: https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/park-people I had forgotten how much I like lists until I got to writing this past post and the one before it. They're just so easy to organize and to visually see what is happening, and they keep me from rambling too much. So yes, here is another list. Also expect at least one more before I end this series... Hope everyone is having a lovely week! Until next time!... read more

Hey everyone! The new post is up! https://www.iesabroad.org/study-abroad/blogs/kmcgeepugetsoundedu/its-health-thing In other news, I had a very interesting encounter this week. I went to the supermarket with my host mother one evening after dinner, and she decided that she needed to buy hair dye. So we get to the hair dye isle, and she immediately begins conversing with this other woman (around the same age; 50s-60s), about which brand is best. Eventually one of the workers comes over to help them, and they decide to each buy one of the same brand; I'm pretty sure there was a 買一送一 (Mǎi yī sòng yī - buy one, get one) or some sort of sale going on. So we go to the checkout and they split the price of the hair dyes, etc. As we are walking out of the ... read more

One journey ends and another begins, the journey home. But before that let me take you back to last night. After our nap,it was about 5:30 and we were getting hungry. So Rick and I decided it was time to go downstairs and scope out up some dinner options. When we hit the lobby we spied Heidi sitting on the couch waiting for Marilyn and Bob, her parents. She waived us over and gave us the plan. It seems she was plotting to ask Jo to join us for dinner, something usually frowned upon by tour companies, but we didn't care, Jo was worth it. John came down next and we let him in on the plot. Mike joined next and the plot thickened. Heidi called Jo, and she accepted our invitation. Unfortunately, as we approach ... read more

Our vacation is slowly coming to an end. This morning we bid good bye to several new friends who left on their journey home or to Hong Kong. We however stayed in Shanghai for our Free Day. We got up unnecessarily early, about 8 AM so that we could head to the lobby and say our last good byes to those folks leaving ahead of us. I sent our emails addresses last night and I was releived to know that the group did get them. So now we have the ability to stay in touch. Rick and I headed off to breakfast and were met there by John, Dick and Mike. Mike had gotten up real early and took a swim in the hotel pool. We chatted and enjoyed our last buffet breakfast. We each joked ... read more
