As our plane arrived timely and we had to wait 6 hours for our connection to Beijing, we have decided to jump out the airport. We catched the so called "Maglev" for Longyuang Station, the only commercial operating magnet driven train in the world. Unfortunately we were too late for the highspeed window during which the train is reaching a maximum speed of 430 km/h. With only 300 km/h it took 8 minutes for the 30km from Pudong airport to Longyuang. Here we crossed the street to the Shanghai Metro. We left the Metro at Nanjing Lu East Station. From here it is a 15 minute walk to the Bund, Shanghais famous riverside street. We experienced the afternoon with a clear sky so that the impressive Pudong Skyline was completely visible. On the picture the most ... read more

Soooo, knowing that China censors its internet access, we downloaded a VPN on our laptop before leaving so that we could access more stuff while traveling. Sadly, the VPN is useless to us, as it is completely recognized and blocked by the Chinese firewall. Google and Facebook are likewise banned in China, so the previous blog I started is equally kaput. In short, we have very little communication with the outside world (an interesting conundrum that I've never experienced before and quite frankly puts a lot of "big picture things" into perspective...#1stworldproblems), which just goes to show how much of my life is tapped into Google products. Go figure.... So, I'm going back to our previous world trip blog, which while not as user friendly as the Google-based blog, at least makes it outside the political ... read more

Well, it's been a month now since I've come to China. It hasn't been an easy road. When I left for China I was ready to have an amazing time. When I got here things didn't come as easily as they have in the past. This trip so far has been filled many issues that I've had to overcome. There are days where it feels like I can't overcome them. But I'm not alone. God put some amazing people in my life over this past month. They have helped me through when I felt like giving in. I'm now in my apartment. This is one of the things that has been so hard about this trip. I've had so many problems with the apartment. The air conditioner in the bedroom wasn't working so that delayed my ... read more

The employment at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center has finished on the 15th July and it has been 2 year living in this grand metropolis. The time was sufficient but I am going to miss it. 20th July will be the start of a long journey home to Denmark. First episode: My friend and brother, Ataya Boy, will accompany me on the first an very exciting stretch: Shanghai-Xining-Lhasa-Kathmandu. We will do this in 10 days. Phase 1:Tibet A lot of things to consider for planning the trip to Tibet: apart from the actual travel itinerary proper travel permits for the region had to be obtained, which was a longer process (~25 days) and any travels outside of Lhasa must be done accompanied by guides if you are non-Chinese citizens. Also, altitude sickness was an issue that ... read more

And with a quick hop and a step (on the high speed rail again) and less than an hour later, I had arrived at my intended final destination of the China leg of my trip - at the iconic eastern coastal port city of Shanghai. Given it's impossibly high skyscrapers these days jostling for real estate with colonial era-like buildings along the Bund, thinking of Shanghai as being just like any other port city would be quite inaccurate. Shanghai today is the commercial heart of the world's second largest economy, and the eyes of its populace have been flashing renminbi signs ever since it was first forced open to foreign commercial trade at the end of the first Opium Wars. Despite the implicated national shame of being subjugated to hostile foreign will, these events could conceivably ... read more

Hele rare dingen. Zaterdag 4 juli was zo’n fijne bizarre dag. We namen ... read more

Now I cannot open the MSN page, not only me, everyone in China. It actually opens as "msn.cn", yes Chinese MSN page, and worst thing is that I cannot even go to other langauge of MSN page. Even I do, click the "USA", it comes back to MSN.CN. It doesn't let me go to English page or whatever other langauge. Luckily, I can check hotmail. If you find a way to solve this, please let me know. Thanks... read more

First stop, the Shanghai Museum. Short stay since I had plans to meet up with Kanon, a guy I met at breakfast at the hotel, who offered to show me around town. He’s originally from Shanghai and is visiting for some job interviews. At 32, he is far more traveled than most Chinese his age that I’ve met, having been around Europe and throughout a good deal of Asia, much of it on business. He’s just earned an MBA from a university in Singapore. There’s a lot to take in at the Museum and my 1 ½ hours only allowed me to scratch the surface of two sections, bronze and pottery, each filling an entire floor. The short stay was a reminder of how far ahead of the West the Chinese kingdoms were in both technology ... read more

Have returned to Shanghai for the third time in my first stop of my fifth trip to China. The Maglev train 8-minute ride to Pudong from the airport at 325 km/hr once seemed so fast. Now, with so many bullet trains crossing China that customarily go close to 300 km/hr, it doesn’t feel that way anymore. Next time, I'll just take the subway all the way into town and back to the airport. It's slower, but you save the trouble of the carting of your luggage from the Maglev station to the subway to continue on into town. Am based this stay on S. Yunnan Lu, just a short walk from People’s Park and the Shanghai museum. It is a wonderful food street with both a variety of restaurants and street food. A long walk on ... read more
