Since last week, the weather became very comfortable, warm and cozy. I guess freezing winter is gone. Here Shanghai is now good to travel, flowers are glooming, don't need thick jacket, NO DOWN COAT!! Uniqlo's Ultra Light Down might be good. Check it out the their biggest Uniqlo at South Shaxi. In this kind of weather, I will love to go a cafe, but I love my "own cafe", looking down the city from my window. I have tried some cakes in Shanghai, local bakery, Starbacks...but I think McCafe is the best. After 5 pm weekdays, cakes are half price. Chinese McDonald's are not bad. I did try locals foods, but I love pizza, bargers, Oh Yea, Subways and Carl's Jr. are good. You can find Carl's Jr. at Raffels City near Peoples' Sq.... read more

Cooking oil made in China is gross unless I buy Italian vergin olive oil. Since I found the coconut oil, I love it and keep using it everyday. It is actually good for your health, control your cholestrol. I put a teaspoon of the coconut oil into coffee. It's not oily. I use it as cooking oil. Good for face and body massage too!! You can buy it at Lotus Market in Super Brand Mall and online shop, Fields.... read more

Well actually the countdown began on 250 days to go. Now we are down to 18 and hoping that everything is organised and in order. I am sure we are all feeling a bit nervous about our upcoming adventure, probably for a whole range of different reasons. It will be hard to leave my family for a month, but China is an adventure that I have dreamed of going on for a very long time. I am pretty sure that everything that needed booking has been booked and everything that needed sorting has been sorted. It is not exactly a hard, back packing trip, but a trip more suitable to our comfort levels. The overview of the trip is as follows. 1. April 1 - Yes April fool's day, we fly to Shanghai. 2. From Shanghai ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47It was wonderful to wake up when we docked to find it was a beautiful sunny day and all the stunning buildings in Shanghai were sparkling in the sunlight. Nestling below all these buildings there are still lots of old apartment blocks and little houses in which the poorer people live. The tall buildings are all run by hotels and companies even though the government still owns all the land. The tallest is the Shanghai World Financial Centre with 100 floors and 472 metres high. The prettiest is the Oriental Pearl Tower constructed with several round globes. Our first trip however was to the older part of Shanghai to see the inevitable Buddhist temple containing 2 beautiful very old jade buddhas and the guardian warrior kings. We walked through China town- how weird is that ... read more

Happy New Year! I hope that 2015 has started off happily and healthfully for all. After a glorious winter holiday, where I was able to share my family, friends, and beautiful Colorado with Mads, my 2015 started off with a big adventure. The Model United Nations group at my school asked if I could help chaperone their trip to a conference in Shanghai! Naturally, I leapt at the opportunity to spend time with the students in a context outside of the classroom and to visit a new city. After a non-stop flight from Copenhagen to Shanghai, it was hard to discern if the landscape was hazy due to our bleary jet-lagged eyes or the haze…time would tell that it was the haze of air pollution. The airport is enormous, and we were slow moving, but we ... read more

"I have seen places that were, no doubt, as busy and as thickly populous as the Chinese city in Shanghai, but none that so overwhelmingly impressed me with its business and populousness. In no city, West or East, have I ever had such an impression of dense, rank richly clotted life. Old Shanghai is Bergson's elan vital in the raw, so to speak, and with the lid off. It is Life itself." - Aldous Huxley Xintiandi There’s an eerie pale light that swallows up East Asia on winter afternoons. I remember it from Korea, a yellow glow that elongated the bare trees and apartment blocks. It’s here in China too, casting long shadows across the rubble of a construction zone near Xintiandi. I’ve gotten bolder about walking into construction zones lately. Shanghai is in a perpetual ... read more

In Defense of Silence It's been a long and winding path to get back in front of this keyboard today. When last I wrote, it was from the white sandy beaches and tropical winds of Koh Samui, Thailand. There, I found myself able to practice Yoga, journaling and general peace-of-mind nearly every hour, let alone every day. Shortly thereafter, I returned to China... or rather, China returned to me. I knew that Thailand would bring about change. I knew that that phase would bring me a fresh set of eyes on China, for better or for worse. And I also knew that I'd be returning to a completely unrecognizable China experience. Almost immediately upon my arrival, I was told to not get too comfortable as change was coming. Within weeks, my bags and apartment were packed ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47We are finally home! Traveling home this time was the longest, most exhaustive travel we have ever encountered. We were awake on December 13th (China time) at 6am and did not get home until December 14th (Missouri) time (so add 13 hours to Dec 13th) until around 9/9:30pm. That's about 60 hours of traveling with 4 flights and a 4-hour drive home. Too much! Just a quick wrap-up of how we got home...We went for a last shopping excursion Friday and learned from other group members that the morning crew of 11 people flying from Shanghai to Beijing to New York (including 7 pilots from Sarasota, FL) had their long flight cancelled! Gate 1 was able to get them on a later flight. The later group (17 of us) flying from Shanghai to Beijing ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47Good Morning! It is almost 9am here in Shanghai China! We've been up since before 6am. Showered and ate good, big western-style breakfast today. Here in a bit we are off to see the bizarre and spend the rest of our Yuan ~ use it or lose it!! Nothing like a little bit of last minute bargaining.Today is Saturday for us and today will be the longest day of my life. (Kamie's too) This afternoon we will check-out of our hotel at 2pm and our tour guide will say goodbye to us at the Shanghai airport. From there we will fly to Beijing at 5pm. We will have a 2 hour layover and we will leave Beijing International Airport at 9pm China time. We will fly 12 hours to Los Angeles and actually arrive ... read more
