Shanghai High Speed Trains, Elevators and Googling ;-) What a high speed day this turned out to be as we entered the Shanghai train station to take the MagLev train to the airport and back. The airport is about 18 miles from the station and we will cover the distance in 7 minutes! The train, due to magnetic levitation 1 cm off the track, goes 250 mph (440 kmh). It is soooo smooth except when we experienced a 1 second “bump and jerk” as we passed a Maglev train going in opposite direction, for a combined speed of 500 mph! We sat across from a lovely young Asian couple who spoke English. She was born in Hong Kong and he was from Shanghai. He travels all over China for work. They said they were so surprised ... read more

Shanghai, Shipping & Shopping Day 1 & 2 Moving out of the East China Sea and toward the Huangpu River (Wangpu) we picked up our Pilot to guide us into Shanghai. We had to reach the river during high tide to have enough draft for the ship. It took us 7 hours from the sea until 9 pm when we docked amid the most amazing sight ever. All around us buildings up to 88 stories, reaching for the sky and each of them lit up like a Christmas tree. Some were twinkling, some had strobes or running lights, every building ablaze, the sky was aglow. Everyone was out on deck to watch us come down the river and dock. The band was playing, and a party going on, on our decks. All along the river there ... read more

Monday We arrived in Shanghai at lunch and received the first of many treats - no Lazy Susan and a pizza for lunch!! First stop, the Bund - the Yangtse Embankment to you and me - the scenery is stunning. We are all struck that Shanghai is far more westernised than the other parts of China that we have visited. The chance to ride on the fastest train in the world doesn't happen everyday - so we rushed to catch the 3.15pm Maglev train (320km/hr or 268 mph) and I can assure you that it felt pretty fast. It is only run at top speed a couple of times a day, for tourists - who else. Then we popped into the French Quarter where Kate grabbed a hot chocolate - autumn in Shanghai has arrived. In ... read more

Geo: 31.2257, 121.476We have had an absolutely amazing trip and we are sad to see it coming to an end. Today we headed out to do a bit more exploring before we have to climb aboard our flight back to the real world tomorrow. We decided to spend the morning at the Shanghai Museum. The modern building was designed in the shape of a traditional cooking vessel. The exhibits featured such subjects as furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasty's, paintings, ceramics and jade. All exhibits were beautifully presented. The museum was pretty busy so we decided to have a quiet lunch back in our hotel room. This morning before heading to the museum we walked through a park where they were setting up for an outdoor jazz performance. One of the band members came down and chatted ... read more

Today it was another lazy morning and we didn't have to meet until 1pm. However as I came back early last night I didn't really have a hangover and didn't want to sit around all morning again. So Nitzan and I had breakfast and then headed to the shopping area everyone visited yesterday afternoon when I came back early. One of our group was still out but had texted to say they were ok and would be back later so we didn't worry. We asked at the hostel recaption how to get there and had a tube map. 2 stops change and 2 stops easy pesay lol. Although Nitzan had been there he wasn't 100% sure of where he got on and where the tube line change was. So like big grown up people we got ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47We were up at three in the morning to catch a taxi to the airport. Today we flew back to Shanghai where we will spend a few more days before flying home to Costa Rica. We arrive to a rainy day in Shanghai. After taking the airport train and a few metro trains we arrive at our hotel. It is in a nice area not far from Peoples Square. Our hotel is more like a mini apartment and it even has a washer/dryer. What a treat! It is a washer and dryer all in one machine. We read over the instructions but they were not easy to understand. All the buttons were in Chinese characters, which caused some confusion. I think we finally washed the same clothes at least two or three times, before ... read more

Hallo allemaal!

After a Chinese breakfast of rice porridge (nice), steamed dumplings and toast (spreading margarine with chopsticks works quite well...) we set off on the metro for the maglev station. We did a return trip on the maglev train to Pudong airport - 8 mins each way and a maximum speed of 431km/h. It's impressive, although it wobbles a bit disconcertingly! After a trip round the museum that explains how it was built we headed to the area of Shanghai with lots of skyscrapers and a big mall with lots of expensive shops. We paid an extortionate amount to go to the 100th floor of the World Financial Centre building for a great, but slightly hazy, view over the city. In the afternoon we went to the Shanghai museum, which was interesting and not too big! This ... read more
