We arrived in Shanghai this morning on the overnight train. For a hard sleeper, it was a surprisingly comfortable journey. We were in a compartment with six bunks, and mostly slept between lights out at 10pm and arrival at Nanjing just before 7. The toilets, however, were pretty disgusting... We got to Shanghai at 11ish, after passing lots of towns and cities with high rise buildings. In Shanghai, we've walked along the Bund with its European-style buildings and view of the skyscrapers in Pudong and visited the Yuyuan gardens. This evening we went on a boat down the river, with both sides impressively illuminated. Definitely time for bed now though!... read more

Our trip to Shanghai started with a delay which is so expected at this point that it almost seems like if the delay is less than a few hours, we are actually on time! We had some issues with towing the a/c from our hangar to the departure area, but we made it in time (thanks to the delay) and had a nice flight to Shanghai. We essentially had to do an instrument approach because of the amount of smog and pollution. We couldn’t see the runway until a little over a mile out! We landed, got the plane cleaned up, got a ride to our hotel, had a quick dinner and then hit the hay. The next morning I was up early and decided to let the Concierge at the hotel help me come up ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391Finally after another delayed flight with China Eastern Airlines, we left Delhi for Beijing via Shanghai at 4:30 am. In Delhi we were told our luggage would go straight through to Beijing, and we were assigned our seats. Arriving in Shanghai we were told we had to retrieve our luggage and go through another luggage drop-off. After much confusion and running around by China Eastern staff we were informed that the plane was full and we could not fly out until a later flight. We had booked this flight eight months ago, so we were not impressed at being told the flight was full when we already had assigned seats. We then spent the next five hours in China Eastern's sad first class lounge. Finally, after a two and a half hour flight we ... read more

To break our journey on the way home we stayed for three nights in Shanghai. Unsure of what to expect we were very pleased with our choice of the Peace Hotel on the Bund. It was a fabulous hotel with lots of history and style; we were traveling with Marg and enjoyed staying in the club floor where we were very spoilt with afternoon teas and pre dinner drinks and canapés. We spent our three days exploring along the busy Bund, the waterfront, enjoying meals out and shopping. We spent one day on a sightseeing bus, a great way to see the local area sitting on the top deck. We found not only hotel staff but also people on the street to be very friendly and we were surprised to find people asking to have their ... read more

Day 9 We start the day with a buffet. Cereal and milk, woo hoo! Unlike any brekky buffet before, this one includes weird and not so wonderful red bean creations, noodles galore, stir fry veggies, sushi and of course, the ever present breakfast crème caramel. Hmmm... From here we board a fast train and arrive in Shanghai for a fleeting 30 hour visit. You know I don't like missing out on things so I've decided we are going to see EVERYTHING this sprawling city has to offer in one day, yep ONE day. To give you some perspective, Shanghai has almost 3 times the number of people as NY (around 18-22m, no one seems to really know) and covers an area of over 6000 sq km. Not to be put off by this, we head off. ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47After breakfast we got our luggage packed up and left it at the hotel as we headed to another area of Shanghai. Today we shopped for a new camera for me. We then had lunch back in the French Concession.Back at the hotel we picked up our luggage and headed to the airport. Our flight to India was an evening flight and took 5.5 hours. True to its reputation, our departure was delayed by 2 hours. Nevertheless, it was a comfortable flight, and we arrived in Delhi at about 2:30 am.... read more

Geo: 31.2426, 121.449We were up early and out hunting for a place for coffee and breakfast. After that, we ventured onto the the metro and headed to People's Square Park. It was a beautiful park near the centre of the city , with some lovely lotus gardens. Unfortunately, after taking only ten photos my camera broke down. So, we will be camera shopping while we are here in Shanghai. From the park we headed to an area called the French Concession which was interesting and very nice to walk through. We had lunch at a Thai restaurant. In the late afternoon we wandered thru a few shopping areas before arriving at an area called The Bund. The skyline of Pudong was very nice to view - stunning skyscrapers. The metro is cheap and easy to utilize. I do ... read more

Geo: 31.23, 121.47We arrived in Shanghai. It is the largest city by population in all of China, more than 24 million people. It is a global financial center and a transport hub. Shanghai is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River and has the world's busiest container port. At our hotel we met up with our dear friend Sonya who lives in Japan. We have known Sonya for years and enjoy travelling with her. She will be joining us here in Shanghai to travel through India with us.... read more

Had breakfast and then we went on a guided tour. I recommend a guided tour if you do not have much time. The guide and driver picked us up at 9 AM. Our guide did not speak very good English. Many of the other guides spoke excellent English. Our driver was a bit of a madman, but at least most of the drivers in Shanghai follow the lights and driving rules. Our driver was not one to obey the rules. Oh well, I guess you cannot luck out all of the time. First we went to a temple and then Yuyuan Gardens. Frankly, I was not too interested. We then went to Shanghai Old Street (http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/shanghai/old-street.htm) and I really enjoyed that. I purchased a few extra gifts and I am more than set in the gift ... read more
