In about ten minutes I taught him more than he learned in two days of training. Ten minutes. The thing that people don't understand is it takes a brainless person to learn how to pick out a game for a class based on a list saying "this game is for this class" and to figure out how to follow directions for a survey or mingling that is written how to do it exactly in the book, or even to teach someone they need to do recitation, teach vocabulary, sentence structures and dictation in a class. But what someone really needs taught to them before they teach is how to teach. What to let them do if they're good kids and what to make them do if they're bad. How to teach them vocabulary and sentence structure ... read more

TravelBlog says I can put videos on here but I don't know how yet. So I'll post a link if anyone wants to see them. A Link . I know I need to put a blog or two about Dalian and my horrible living conditions, but, I don't like confirming that I'm a tourist around here. Also, I don't like posting blogs without pictures and my computer doesn't read my memory card. So, I usually take the memory card over to Jeremiah's computer and he transfers them to my thumb drive. But a really funny thing happened this morning. Not to me, but to a couple of my friends here. Warning: This is really funny. We had to "show our faces" at the freshman orientation thing this morning at 9 am so I had Jonathon "Kaffy" ... read more

being 5 days in dalian was a break from travelling just right in the middle of my journey. meeting someone you know already for quite a long time - namely bianca - here in the outer most eastern part of china was a nice experience. since bianca had to work all day long i had all the days for me on my own. well, dalian is indeed not the most chinese city i have seen up to now. actually it's the most un-chinese city i know - er, at least in china. streets are very clean, houses are european or russian style and i thing even the traffic seemed to be more controlled than anything i have seen in the last month. people are also not the same here than in the rest of china. they ... read more

Camillo invited me over tonight. "Hey, I'm making barbecue come on over." So I went over and as soon as I got there I was Mrs. Slavery to the King. I started by buying them beers and taking a ton of stuff outside for the barbecue. Then once we got it all outside some of the people started arriving - Hui being first. "What, you haven't made it already? I just came over to eat. I didn't want to have to wait so long. Why did I come here?" "We just got the stuff down here. We'll have it ready in a minute." "Aah, grumble, grumble, grumble." A couple minutes later I was asked to get some oil. "Get some vegetable oil" "Okay, not a problem" I was desperate to get away from Hui for a ... read more

Of all the words I can think of to describe Joan two come to mind: classist and hypocritical. I never really thought about being classist too much until now. I mean sure, at school there were always my friends who complained about the rich kids who wore Abercrombie and Fitch and how snobby and immature rich kids can be. Although I calmly explained without trying to shove my money in their faces that not all rich kids were like that and that not all of those kids were rich. But this is different. "And you, do you have a boyfriend?" "Well, uh ... kind of." "Is he Chinese?" "Yeah." "I knew it the way your Chinese improved so quickly. What does he do? Is he a teacher like you?" I'm eating so I motion scissors near ... read more

Saturday was a wonderful day. I finally got my internet set up! The computer guy, Ben, also said that he would go out with us that night and show us a good club. For the day, we had plans to go to the beach. I got outside the apartment building and it hit me. I am an idiot. I locked myself out again. Embarrassing. But Jeremyer said he wouldn't tell and we would call someone when we got back. So, okay, I was going to enjoy the day. We reached the Yellow Sea. Beautiful beach! Vendors everywhere though. We played a ball game in the sea with some Chinese people. We'd just hit the ball up and everyone would splash so we couldn't see where it went. At the beach there was this tall tower and ... read more

¨Let's go hon, it's time to go.¨ The boys walk towards the door with their stuff. "I'm drunk. I want to drink more.¨ Camillo says pulling me back. I want to play more,¨he calls as I continue to pull my stuff together. I want to dance.¨ "I want to go home" I reply to him. This pattern continues for a while. The boys have put their stuff down. I've gone from being the only one wanting to dance to literally not being able to dance. They've played the same song four times. The CD's on repeat. I can no longer dance to the same song but he continues on as if it's his first time hearing it. "Maybe I'll go outside and do some work while I wait and they'll understand," I think to myself. I ... read more

Friday was a day where everything went wrong. I started out the day by locking myself out of my apartment. The doors automatically lock when you shut them so it wasn't hard to do, in my defense. Then we went over to Liaoning University to turn in our passports and I learned that we have to go through a physical Tuesday and....take a blood test. This is hard to admit, but I seem to have a problem with needles. Right after I was told about the blood test I got hot, shaky, and very nauseous. I felt a little sicker as the night went on. However, I joined my friends for a ride downtown to the nearest 'bushengke' (Pizza Hut). Downtown was glorious! It was as big or bigger than Chicago. We found the Pizza Hut ... read more

Hi Lo from the girl you all haven´t heard from for a little while. I just went out to dinner, starving and losing my voice from having a cold and having so many classes in a row. I went out for ban fan underneath my apartment. Ban fan is literally mixed meal - a bunch of veggies and an egg mixed with some spices and rice. I tend to go to the same place to get the same thing. I have my ban fan place, my noodles place, my rice noodles place, my jaod-zi place and a couple other plaes. It's strange that these places sell other things but I never tend to get the other things, no matter how many other things there are or how good they are. It's pretty strange. I had a ... read more

I am pleased to to bring into the spot light the 2 cheapest, last minute purchases that have served me so well on this trip. First I would like to introduce my $20 running shoes that I picked up at SAAN right before I left. They have not only aided me to climb the great wall etc for the last 2 months but have kept my feet in less pain then any of my other shoes, hands down. Secondly i would like to bring into the lime light my watch, I picked it up on the way out of Overweighty grocery store for $10 bucks. Dispite the dust gathering under the face & the patially broken strap, apparently it looks like a very valuable watch to the Chinese. I've had various people comment on how ... read more
