So it's finally happened. I didn't know it would happen this fast but I'm finally starting to get old. I slept 9 hours last night and again fell asleep the entire bus ride from my school to my work. For some reason I always seem to be tired, no matter how much sleep I get. Also I'm getting lovehandles! Darby with lovehandles, can you imagine? I mean really! I never thought it would happen. I think I just need to sleep and exercise more. I've not been exercising recently because I've been so tired but maybe I'm tired because I'm not exercising. The only thing I do all day long is work and eat and sleep. Not good! I want to start going running outside during my long breaks when it gets a little warmer. Maybe ... read more

I am really on the internet too long. About 7 or 8 in the evening, I finally made myself leave my apartment and go somewhere. I put on my tennis shoes, grabbed my Ipod and bounced out of the door and down my concrete stairway. I passed a couple of children playing a game of badmitton with two rackets and a bird. I passed the fruit vendors, the tanned meat fryers, the dvd salesmen, and several hungry students my age chomping on fish balls and meat-on-sticks. I passed the newspaper stand and the 4 or 5 motorcyclists, always waiting there, and made a direct right at the corner. I walked past the over-bridge, past the flower shop, past Tian Tian, and finally made it to my destination: the front of New Mart. At about 7 or ... read more

I'm back after a business trip to China. 5+ hours to Shanghai, then an internal flight from Shanghai to Dalian. Stayed at the Shangri-La, and our gracious hosts made sure we were well taken care of, from providing cars and chauffeurs to taking us for fantastic lunches and dinners. Oh yes and of course there was the business part of it too! ;) Good trip, more on it later. For now, am going to start reading the non-movie version of emThe Prestige/em by Christopher Priest. Have a great weekend, everyone! Updates: Some pics from AA's camera for the time being: I know it looks like we just went there to eat, but really there emwere/em important discussions going on! Really! ;) In this pic, we had just arrived from Shanghai - Dalian. (My Frontier Technology ... read more

So I really need help with this problem. Cam's aunt decided that we were close enough that she could request something from me through Cam. So Cam asked me to get it and I said I would try. Unfortunately this item that was requested does not exist. She is looking for a sweatshirt (preferrably wool) made in the US that says "made in the US". Unless I get someone to make a sweatshirt for me I am not sure about such a thing existing. I have looked on-line, my parents have looked in the stores and I no longer know what to do. I guess I'll just have to figure something out. So, I found out something in class today that really made me laugh. When one of the two Russian students in our class left ... read more

I believe that after three classes of teaching english to children I can classify myself as an English Teacher. A big title. It comes with a lot of responsibility. I am responsible for the future of these children. Their lives depend on my ability. Well, I wouldn’t carry it that far. I think my first day is worth mentioning though. I got up very early, for me, in the morning because I was determined to take the bus to my destination. I left my apartment at 8 o’clock, and walked to the end of Lan Qing Jie, eyes open, for the Bus 31 stop. I kept walking along Huang He Lu. No bus 31. It was one of the haziest days Dalian has had since I arrived, but I was definitely not overlooking a Bus ... read more

Saturday, March 17, brought celebration among even the smallest communities in the world. Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? To stomp on the spirit of a man whom, quoted from a native Irish man “soaked all the fun out of Ireland”. A man who spent his life converting Pagans to Catholicism, making it the major religion in Ireland today. A man whom hated alcohol, hated parties, and all else evil in the world. It brings back memories of my last March, post St. Patrick’s Day, in Ireland. Making conversation with the bartender, ~“How late are you working tonight?” -“Oh, I’m running back and forth, doing this, doing that, working off me sins!” ~”Do you go to church?” -”I do, mornin’ and night! I tell ya, I must’ve done something in me past life, cause ... read more

Haven't really been blogging lately. Don't really know what to write about. Can't write about Cam any more and don't really have a great feeling about writing about what I do every day all day long - teaching and studying. Not really much of a change. Someone kind of said it once a long time ago when I was blogging, my blog isn't a travel blog and that's what the site's for. I live here and have a life so I haven't really thought that people would want to read about it. The things I could possibly write about are the changes in my daily activities - like yesterday my class had a get together so I went and got to meet a bunch of Germans. There aren't any Germans that I know of besides them ... read more

So yesterday I taught my English Corner on periods, sex and pregnancy to women only. A bunch of people were worried about the topic beforehand. A couple people said that it wouldn't go well and people would end up walking out because they got frightened. Others were making fun of me for the topic and not being helpful when it came time to ask them questions about it. But when I got in the classroom it was completely jam-packed with women and one tutor in their to try and learn new things. It was like teaching middle schoolers. I started off with "what are some ways in which we are different from men?" Once I got a list of those - which included the topics I was working on for the day I went through and ... read more

The Ice Festival is probably the main reason why many tourists visit Harbin in winter - it may be the only reason to visit Harbin all year round. A 2.5 hour flight from Shanghai will get you there. Upon arrival, some guys from Beijing were hovering around in the -10 cold, deliberating about taxis. 'These guys here are major rip offs' they warned. My companion and I hopped on the bus for 20 yuan into town and to the main railway station. Some other friends caught a taxi and it cost 100 yuan which is the going rate. It's difficult travelling sometimes when you aren't sure of what's what. I know of a few people first-hand who have been conned in China (including myself - more on that later). Of course it happens everywhere, all I'm ... read more

There are a couple things that I currently do not know how to say in English. If you know how to say these things please let me know. First is something the Chinese call "ma la". "La" means "spicy" so it is a type of spicy. But instead of being hot spicy this is a type of spicy that makes your mouth numb. Second is what the Chinese call "bai ming nian" literally "white next year" which makes absolutely no sense. The closest I can come to this in English is the anniversary of your Chinese animal sign. So one has a "bai ming nian" every twelve years when the year is the same as the sign you were born in. Next year is my "bai ming nian" as I was born in the year of ... read more
