Last weekend we (Jonathon, Jeremia, Tyler, and I) worked together on making a movie for the talent show. We spent a large part of Saturday with a sweet girl named Chanel, who took us on a long long journey to find the only costume place in Dalian. Besides getting that done, I was also an MC (Master of Ceremony) for this important, new student welcoming event. My schedule was not very organized and it was hard to decide which was more important - attending MC practices, going to work at teaching english to a class of 7-8 year olds, attending a going-away-to-america party for one of my best friends, or attending school. It all ended Tuesday night though with the talent show. It went surprisingly well. It was a very large crowd of students, teachers, and ... read more

Dalian locals continually ask me 'Why are you leaving Dalian? It's the best city in China. I will live here forever.' Ignoring the narrow-mindedness of this comment, there is some truth to it. It's certainly one of the cleanest city in China, though judging by some of the other cities I've visited, this isn't exactly something to boast about. It's got numerous beaches and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous, thus presenting numerous day trips. Also, whilst not on the scale of Shanghai or Beijing, it has some nightlife, though not as much as some would like. Overall, it's a very comfortable city to live in and has certainly looked after me in my time here. I shall be sad to leave. Here are a few piccies of the city:-... read more

Here are a few pictures of my time teaching here in China. The teaching has been a fantastic experience. I'd never taught seriously before I came here, and it has certainly presented me with new challenges which I did not expect to face. However, I've learned a great deal from it, and it's been a great feeling to actually love going to work everyday!... read more

I got off the bus onto a fairly small and crowded hardware street. I waited until Monica recieved me and we got in a taxi to go to her apartment home. Her apartment building is in the center of the city, but is surprisingly quiet. The tall 17-story buildings block off the city and circle a landscaped water garden. We relaxed in her home before dinner at her uncle's house. I felt very welcome there. They were very nice although they didn't speak a word of english. Monica kept trying to encourage her 16-year-old brother to speak to me in english but he was very shy. He showed me some of the english homework he was working on (over the holiday!). It was very interesting. One article was over a strange food in America called the ... read more

Monday morning at 7:00, Amber, Jonathon and I loaded up our bags and began the walk to the bus. I could see the sad looks on the faces of my suppliers as we passed them by. "Ni qu na er?" My fruit stand lady asked with concern. (Where are you going?) I made the motion of a mountain with my hands and she nodded with understanding. It would be a whole week before she could ever see my kuai again. We entered that all-too-common awkward situation where we are on a bus with about 30 people that we don't know. And they are speaking Korean, mind you. Oh well, I popped in some raisins and sat down. As the bus passed the "small" city of Dalian, a boy came through the aisle and handed us a ... read more

There's something about waking up at 5 in the morning to take a walk around the neighborhood. It's quiet, peaceful; a sign of a beautiful day to come. The first sign of peace in the daylight. It's too early to hear the dying yells from the man on the bike that cycles by my window every morning. It's too early to hear the firecrackers going off, or loud jets tearing through the sky. It's before the banging of street pails and before the fryers are heated. As I walk along the brick sidewalks in the fresh, cool morning air, I imagine that the neighborhood is letting out a quiet yawn. I built my cottage among the habitations of men, And yet there is no clamor of carriages and horses. You ask: "Sir, how can this be ... read more

Friday, September 29: 7:20 a.m. I meet my LNU-School of International Business group, along with thousands of other people, outside the stadium of the south LNU campus. I am made to hold a sign at the lead of my group. I am instructed to walk very slowly. I am told several times how to hold the sign and when to turn the sign to the right. After waiting for about 1/2 an hour, the line of thousands begins to move. We enter the side entrance, into a stadium filled with thousands more. Drums are beating as we walk, slowly, between girls shaking flowers to our left, and the stadiums and the major platform to our right. "Turn the sign!" I turn the sign. A loudspeaker announces something in Chinese and the stadium applauds, yells, and whistles. ... read more

Well first off I feel sort of torn. On the one hand yesterday was the first day ever for me to kiss Camillo and he has started to accept it as a given fact. We also accepted the fact that we both equally like each other (finally!). But on the other hand yesterday he once again told me that he wants to try to be with a Chinese woman before he tries to really be with me. There's a couple things about this. Mainly I feel that it's a good idea if he wants to do it and that if it's something that needs to be done it needs to be done. Better him find the person he should be with than constantly regret staying with me and not finding that person. But on the other ... read more

I've had a couple questions about my living conditions. Am I sleeping on the floor? Am I alone? Do I have a western toilet? Is the apartment small? Does it smell? Saturday we walked up the Red Dragon, which is a staircase up a mountain that has about 200 steps. We (the foreigners) were asked to just show our faces around the dormitories so the parents can confirm it is an international campus. Oh, I talked about this in the last blog. But anyways, we got to see the students' dormitories. Four students share one dormitory and there are at least 100 dormitories in one apartment building. They each recieve a flat, raised bunkbed with a metal desk and a metal closet underneath. The four also share one bathroom; a dark, cornered bathroom with a ground ... read more

Well, it's almost my father's birthday and I feel I haven't written much in here recently. I'm about to go on a huge trip so I probably won't be able to write much in here until I get back. I'm planning on buying a big journal for the trip so I can write in it every day and I can copy it in here when I get back. My first stop, as of yesterday, is Tibet. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm going to be taking a train from here to Beijing Monday night and then another train Tuesday night to Lhasa. The train to Lhasa takes two days (48 hours). Once we get there I will have 10 days in Tibet. We're going to go to three different cities, one of which is Lhasa. ... read more
