I don't really think about it this way most of the time but here I am almost completely illiterate. It's an interesting experience - not being able to read books or magazines that I normally love to read. But it's so much more than that. In India I also couldn't read books and magazines, but I could read signs. Here I can't even do that. I need assistance filling out forms or trying to find a place. I just walked up to a machine to get a number for line at a bank and I looked at the machine and said in Chinese. How do I get a number? The man had to press one button for me. It's only one simple button! But there was no way I was to know which button to press. ... read more

Today I spent most of the day doing some sort of Chinese. Not that I suppose that's uncommon as I'm in China but it was a long day. There was one woman sitting in a red costume with a mask on. She was absolutely beautiful. She looked real sitting there but I knew she couldn't be nor was she. I was simply looking at a picture in a museum in Dalian. There are very few of them here in Dalian and this particular one was filled most of the way with Russian art - not actually Chinese art. It was on the corner of Russian street - a huge tourist spot for ... well ... Russians. So I suppose it made sense to have a lot of Russian art. It's just a line. I thought to ... read more

I'm back sitting on my couch in my apartment with my cat sitting to my right listening to my ex-boyfriend Jake play guitar and sing (sometimes horribly sometimes well) through AIM - yes you can even talk to each other through AIM. It's a wonderful cheap way to talk to him, or in this case hear him play. He's a really great guitar player and really loves it. He's the only one who has played a lot of guitar around me in the past couple of years and I really love it. Thinking back to today I had a very strange incident at the bank. There were three lines of bank tellers and they were ushering all of the foreigners into one of them as that one could speak English. So I'm ushered into a line ... read more

This is my last entry for a little while. I'm going to go off to Guangzhou. While I'm there I want to see Zhaoqing, Shenzhen and possibly Macau or Hong Kong. We'll see once I get there though. I more than likely will write my entries down and type them up when I come back but if I have to write while I'm there I will do that. Camillo thinks that I'm going to be in trouble. He thinks Guangzhou is very seriously not safe and that I am going to be in trouble the way I want to go. He thinks that if I want to be safe at all there I should go stay in a nice hotel and not a hostel or a cheap hotel. Now what I keep telling him doesn't seem ... read more

"Okay. Now try this" he paints on a sheet of see-through white paper with a beautiful large brush and I look on amazed as each stroke goes on the paper unanounced and yet perfect. Each line not a line but a piece of art. How can one line make itself into such art? I wonder amazed. I try it myself but I am afraid. The man who just left scared me. Scared me out of my comfort. I have been left with a shallow self, shaking on the inside a bit and it shows. It shows on the paper with each stroke. The lines are not his lines, not beautiful strokes but shaky to the point of sometimes even being invisible. "No, no, not that. Argh." He shows me again. And again the same beautiful strokes ... read more

I feel like a fool sometimes. They look at me and think "what great strength! She came all the way here from another place to live by herself! " But I'm just like all the others - living in my comfort zone surrounded by my friends in a place that I know. A place where I wake up every day and do the same thing - go to the same gym, the same mall, even the same places to eat (although they get dull sometimes). The same job Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I too am scared to leave my comfort zone so I search for yet another job that I can do here - within my comfort zone. The strength and energy it takes to leave the zone is intense, tiring, sometimes overbearing. So I stay ... read more

"Go jump off that high cliff" he told me. "Okay!" It sounded like a stupid answer but that was what it felt like, being in another culture, having to follow the every beck and command of those that one has made closest friends with. It's what I feel like I'm doing sometimes. "I want you to translate this for me." "Okay what is it?" I asked her as I continued to pedal. "Hang on, I'll get it for you." She went and showed me the sheet. It was all in characters. I recognized some but knew I would never be able to translate it how it was. "Can you read it to me and then I'll translate it?" "Um, okay." She looked at me a little skeptically. "I can't read it." "Okay" she told me as ... read more

I could never get breast implants. It's bad enough being a walking advertisement in one country. Walking around the streets doing your daily business - going to the gym to work-out or to the bank to get a new ATM card - and having someone walking up to you to ask a question. "Excuse me. Are you American? My husband is too but he's away now and I need someone to tutor my kids. Can you do it?" one lady asked me in perfect English. "Can you speak English" a lady asked my Chinese co-worker "Can you translate something for me?" I suppose everyone's their own walking billboard. Some just keep it hidden better than others. You start having a conversation and you both end up talking about your lives. Soon you realize he's a computer ... read more

He looked down and there was a cigarette in the sauce. He got even angrier. He had been listening to them talk for quite a while now. About how she shouldn't be here, and definitely not with him. What did they care? Whose business was it that he was with her? Surely not theirs. He had kept his mouth shut until this point but he could no longer control his temper. He took the sauce bowl and threw it into the corner. At the sound of the bowl clanking she looked up. She could tell there was something wrong from the look in his eyes even though she hadn't been paying attention to what they were saying. "What?" she asked. All he could do was make a gesture to the bowl. But she couldn't see into ... read more

Rain here is just a big huge joke. I've literally never seen it rain here. The other day when we were at work it "rained" and someone told me it was raining outside. I looked outside and said "where? It's not raining." They looked at me like I was crazy until I explained that where I come from rain means the sky opens up and rains, not sprinkles. Here all they seem to get is sprinkles. Just now before I came home from Camillo's we saw lightning outside and Camillo looked out because he said if it was raining I'd better go home right away. He looked out and was like "Oh, my goodness, it's raining really hard! What do we do?" "I can sleep on the sofa." He started looking for a blanket then looked ... read more
