The afternoon after finishing the trek I didn’t do a great deal, just had a shower and went out and got dinner. Nyaungshwe seems like a decent town though, with plenty of tourist restaurants and guesthouses mixed in with local businesses and a few temples and monasteries. Initially I thought it to be quite touristy but after being there a few days I quite liked it. Next day I hired a bike for a couple of dollars and started a little ride that the bike hirer recommended. Just after I started I ran into a Swiss guy Marcus that I had met that morning at breakfast. His girlfriend was feeling sick and going back to the hotel so we decided to do the ride together. We just took our time riding along the quiet roads and ... read more

We arrived early morning from the Heho airport after a 36 minute flight with Air Bagan. The flight was 100% better than I expected, I'd heard all sorts of horror stories about the domestic flights in Myanmar but our aircraft looked fine (it had some Alitalia logos here and there so that gave some reassurance). We met with a woman working for EPG travel at the airport, we reconfirmed our Heho-Yangon flight and got in a taxi to Nyaungshwe where we were spending two nights at the Hu Pin hotel. The hotel was easy to be found; a bright yellowy orange building at the entrance to town. We got room 701 which was up 4 flights of stairs, no elevator, but the bonus was the mountain views across town. We were absolutely knackered from a day ... read more

12/12/2010 - 15/12/2010 After the 3 day trek we arrived in Nyangshwe, small city nearby Inle Lake. I stayed at Queen Inn guesthouse, bungalow style with Mum, the perfect host! Due to my weak pesonality I developed another addiction here in Myanmar...banana pancakes!!!! They usually serve them anywhere in Myanmar and I would have at least one a day. For that my guesthouse was the best one I stayed....all you can eat banana pancakes for breakfast!!.. set a record of 5 big ones! First day I met some french people at the guesthouse and we went on the full day boat trip on the lake. It was quite nice: visiting the floating gardens and villages, silk and lotus flower weaving factory, cigar rollng factory..etc and of course the oligated tourist shops along the way. During the ... read more

My group of Italian friends (Carla, Antonelle and Daniele) and I were tired from the 3 day trek but eager to explore Inle Lake – a large expanse of blue water in the east of Burma. The boat we were to explore in was a colourful wooden long-tail with seats running up the centre isle. Our driver was an old and friendly man with a weathered face who wore a pink-rimmed straw hat and fake ray-bans. We spun around and began to cruise down one of the many waterways that file off the main lake. Our boat cut through the still water, past grassy banks and under bamboo bridges. The sun was high in the sky now and raining its now-familiar thumping mid-day blows on our heads. Fortunately our driver had a few umbrellas on board ... read more

Hello all, still in Asia -- have you enjoyed the rest from my posts? Spent the last three weeks in Myanmar and what a spectacular country, well spectacular minus the dictatorship blocking my email and travel blog sites. In spite of the frustrations of blocked access, Myanmar is an amazing country and worthwhile to visit. I'll try to keep my blog short and be mindful of the pictures as I know you all have busy lives, especially at this holiday time of year. I arrived in Yangon on November 17th via the airport with zero issues, even with the required declaration of my electronics (camera and netbook), the officials didn't even look at my declaration card. Had a few rough days after that, ended up getting very sick so not a lot of time in Yangon ... read more

Having bought our bus ticket to Inle Lake at least now we know where we are headed from Yangon, we have not a clue on how we will do the country and out on a whim decides to do Inle first, we came back to the Singapore restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building from the footbridge and have a big lunch, we leisurely took our time as pick up time at the bus agencies near the train station is 1pm, arriving in our GH I noticed the time was 12:30pm when we thought its only about 12pm, we panicked and I asked the owner if his watch is accurate, yes, here in Burma you add 30 more minutes! We rushed to get out and left in a hurry walking towards the station, we made ... read more

Inle Lake is the Burmese equivalent of Venice with locals living on the lake in stilt houses. Popping to your neighbours for a cup of sugar involves getting your boat out. While there might not be gondolas, Inle has gone one better with its one legged boat rowers. Men stand in their boats and attach an oar to one of their feet, flamingo like they paddle round the lake either catching fish, going to the floating markets where you fight for space between the boats, or tending their gardens which also float and have row upon row of succulent vegetable. The lake is also home to a variety or artisans and you can hear the silversmiths making jewelry, the looms busy at work weaving silk scarves and see the women rolling cigars of various different flavours. ... read more

Last stop on our magical journey through Myanmar. I think we saved the best for last. This is one of the most unique places I have ever been to. From our arrival at Heho airport till we reached Nyaunghswe where we boarded our boat to take us to our hotel on Inle Lake, almost every moment of this one hours journey was full of photo opportunities, if you were looking out of the left hand window you were sure to be missing something remarkable on the right. I kept asking the driver to stop so I could get out and enjoy it all. After an hour we boarded our boat for the half hours transfer to our hotel , the Inle Princess Resort, again full of wonderful sights. The last ten minutes of our journey after ... read more

So after an eventful bus ride we were dropped off at the cross roads outside town where we waited for a pickup knowing the price should be $1. After saying no to offers of 5 and 6 we eventually went with a guy who was just going back home and would take us begrudgingly for the same price as the pickup. His car was falling to bits but was also pretty retro. We were finally in inle and already planning on getting out. This was purely because we knew we had to get back to Yangon aka Rangoon for the water festival which everyone recommended to us at the former capital. By the time we had checked in it was too late to go round travel agents and touts so we went instead for a curry. ... read more
